Meissner, Oscar Weldon Oscar Weldon Meissner, a good and decent man, passed into eternal rest on June 5, 2005. His loving wife, children, son-in-law and daughter-in-law were with him at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital at the time of his passing. For many years Oscar Meissner lived a vibrant and full life even as he felt the effects of numerous, debilitating illnesses. His family will always admire the way he fought to live a life of honor even in spite of these medical difficulties. Born in Aleman, Texas on the outskirts of Hamilton, Texas, on December 7, 1924, Oscar was the only child of Bertha Klatt Meissner and Paul Reinhold Meissner. However, his mother, who was widowed previously, had eight children prior to Oscar's birth. Those siblings are Wallace, Lennard, Robert, Harold, Norbert, Norma and Benita, all deceased. One remaining brother, Raymond Klatt lives in Lubbock, Texas. Raised by his aunt and uncle, Louise and John Leitko, after Oscar's mother's untimely death when he was just three years old, Oscar worked on his uncle's farm and attended school in Aleman, Texas. He was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aleman in 1939 and returned for his confirmation class's fiftieth anniversary in 1989. Growing up in a community of German immigrants, Oscar spoke German at home, in school, and at church. This knowledge of German prompted US Army officials to send him to Germany at the conclusion of World War II, where he worked with other Army officials to re-establish peace in Germany. Prior to serving in Germany, Oscar served his country during World War II in the Philippines and Japan. It was while serving in Germany after the war that Oscar Meissner met his future wife, Ruth Elizabeth Regitz, from New York, on a blind date in Paris, France in 1947. Ruth was a civilian working as a secretary/interpreter for Army Headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany at that time. Oscar always told people that he knew from the first moment he met Ruth that he was going to marry her. They did marry in Heidelberg, Germany on July 2, 1949 and remained in love with each other throughout the fifty-six years they had together. During the course of their marriage, Oscar and Ruth had three children; twin daughters, Carol and Barbara; and a son, Paul. Oscar stayed in the army for twenty years, traveling extensively with his family throughout the United States and Europe. Master Sergeant Meissner also served in Korea. Settling in Cornwall, New York after retiring from the Army, Mr. Meissner worked at Nepera Chemical Company, GAF Corporation, and Tarkett. It was during this phase of his life that Oscar became actively involved in the Masons. As a member of Jerusalem Temple Lodge # 721 of Free and Accepted Masons, Oscar served as Chaplain, Treasurer, Master, and a number of other positions. He also served as District Deputy, Grand Master, of Orange-Rockland District. Involvement in this fraternal order fulfilled Oscar's wish to be of service to others. It also brought him great pleasure and a sense of contributing to a greater good. Being active in free masonry became a part of who Oscar was. In addition to his involvement with the Masons, Mr. Meissner also served on the Board of Managers at Brookside Condominiums, as President and Treasurer for many years and also at Windsor Crest Condominiums where he served as Treasurer. Throughout his life, Oscar's Christian beliefs determined the way he lived his life. When he lived in Cornwall, for over thirty years Oscar was a member of the Cornwall United Methodist Church. When he and his wife moved to New Windsor, they joined King of Kings Lutheran Church. As an active member of Christ's community, Oscar served both churches in a variety of capacities. Oscar's Christian faith was an essential and meaningful component of Oscar's life, influencing all his thoughts and actions. Family remained important to Oscar throughout his life. He stayed in contact with his family in Texas, even subscribing to the Hamilton newspaper to ensure he kept up to date with happenings in his hometown. With the support and encouragement of his wife, Oscar participated abundantly in the lives of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Left to continue the legacy of this family is Oscar's wife of fifty-six years, Ruth Meissner of New Windsor, New York; his daughter Carol Meissner of Poughkeepsie, New York; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Paul Campbell of Ohio; and son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Deborah Meissner of Newburgh, New York. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include: Carol Meissner's children, Karin Surdovel Ali, her husband, Naveed Ali and their daughter Nora; also David Surdovel and his fianc‚e, Jennifer Hollins. Barbara Meissner Campbell's children; Jennifer Campbell Wagner, her husband, David Wagner and their three children, Mathias, Carolena and Kenny. Also Holly Campbell Wilson, her husband Matt Wilson and their son Caleb. Also Emily Campbell. Paul Meissner's children Tyler Meissner and Kyle Meissner. Funeral arrangements will include visitation at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, 2005. A Masonic service honoring Oscar Meissner's life will be held at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 8 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home. A funeral service in preparation for a Christian Burial will be held at King of Kings Lutheran Church in New Windsor Thursday, June 9 at 1:30 PM. Interment will follow immediately afterward at Woodlawn Cemetery in New Windsor, NY. Oscar Meissner lived a good and full life. He was loved by his wife and by his children. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew him and loved him. His entire family benefited from his love, kindness, compassion and generosity of spirit.
