Samuel G. Armstrong, a retired employee at USMA, West Point and longtime area resident, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005 in Brooksville, Fla. He was 98. The son of the late George and Margaret Clisdell Armstrong, he was born February 6, 1907 in New Windsor. He was a life-member of Dan Leghorn Engine Company and past master of Brookside Grange. Survivors include his sons, George Armstrong of Weeki Wachee, Fla. and Edward Armstrong of Derry, N.H.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret "Peg" Armstrong. There will be no visitation. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at Wallkill Valley Cemetery, Rt 52, Walden. Borkenhagen, Marilyn J. Mrs. Marilyn J. Borkenhagen, a lifetime resident of Port Jervis, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 after a brief illness at Orange Regional Medical Center Horton Campus with her family by her side. She was 79. The daughter of the late Francis E. and the late Susan P. Murray, she was born October 27, 1925 in Port Jervis, N.Y. She was married to the late Edwin F. Borkenhagen who died December 15, 1965. Marilyn was the first female Rural Route Carrier for the Port Jervis Post Office where she worked for many years. A family statement reads: "She was a strong-willed, caring woman who spent most of her life caring for others. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her." Surviving are sons: Keith Borkenhagen and his wife Margie of Sparrowbush, Kevin Borkenhagen and his wife Denise of Greensboro, N.C.; brothers: Larry Murray and his wife Alice of Port Jervis, Robert Murray and his wife Agnes of Port Jervis; sister: Fran Hosking of Port Jervis; eight grandchidren: Jarrod, Nicole, Kyle, Erik, Ashley Victoria, Erika & Jason; one great-granddaughter: Kiley; also several nieces and nephews. Burlingame, Ellis Ward Ellis Ward Burlingame, a retired lieutenant for the New York State Dept. of Corrections at Sullivan Correctional Facility, died June 7, 2005 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 76. The son of Harry Ellis and Mildred Latimer Burlingame, he was born August 19, 1928 in Acidalia, N.Y. Ward was a retired auctioneer, a member of Jeffersonville Masonic Lodge #521, Shorthorn Association, and he owned the only herd of purebred Shorthorns in Sullivan County. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps and a graduate of Ulster Community College. Survivors include his wife Marie Anna Iken Burlingame at home; one son, Ward Ellis Burlingame and wife Julie Frances Huggins Burlingame; one daughter Becky Reddish and husband Norman "Butch" Reddish; a very dear friend who was like a son, Edward Loughrey and wife Debra; one sister Ruth Kane of Rochester; five grandchildren, Brittany Ann Reddish, Blain Ward Reddish, Matthew Ward Burlingame, James Ellis Burlingame and Dolores Dorothea Cunningham; and several nieces and nephews. He was 74. The son of the late James Cavazza and Angelina Sorrentino, he was born December 3, 1930 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Larry was a member of St. James Church in Milton, N.Y.; a 23-year member of the Knights of Columbus Father Hanley Council in Marlboro; ILGWU in New York City; and member of Plattekill Seniors. A family statement reads: "Dad was a wonderful father and an incredible grandfather. Spending time with his grandchildren gave him pure joy. The son of the late Vincent J. Sr and the living Marie Monaco Cortese, he was born June 5, 1928 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was married to Marion Neumeyer Cortese. Vincent was a veteran of the US Army, having served as corporal during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier R.C. Church, Narrowsburg; past commander and member of Tusten-Highland VFW Post 6427 and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Marion at home; his mother, Marie Cortese; one daughter, Marie Dietrich and her husband Dennis; three stepchildren, Gladys, Gemma and Phil Oliva; two sisters, Margurite Schroeder and Delia Cortese; two granddaughters, Analey and Shannon; one great-grandchild; as well as several nieces and nephews. Gullo, a retired salesman and manager for Sears, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at Cornwall Hospital. He was 88. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. to Peter and Michelina Gullo. He later moved to Stroudsburg, Pa. where he resided with his beloved wife, Cecelia for 52 years, they have resided in New Windsor for the past five years. Peter was a lifetime member of the American Legion, served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Antietam and USS Bunker Hill, and was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Pennsylvania. Peter will be missed by many and loved by all. "Itch" Mapes, Sr., a retired assembler for Ford Motor Co. in Mahwah, N.J. and St. Louis, Mo., died Sunday June 5, 2005. He was 69. The son of the late Ralph H. Mapes and Wanetta Montgomery Mapes, he was born October 24, 1935 in Port Jervis, N.Y. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret "Pat" Carter Mapes. A resident of Hazelwood, Mo. and lifelong resident of Port Jervis, he was a life member of Hose 4, Howard Wheat Engine Co. in the Port Jervis Fire Department. Itch was an avid bowler and member of the Port Jervis Bowling Team; and was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame. McGregor, George William Stuart George William Stuart McGregor, 90, of Suffern, N.Y. passed away on Tuesday afternoon, May 19, 2005 at Ramapo Manor. Born July 19, 1914 in Tuxedo Park, N.Y., he was the oldest of four children born to Duncan McGregor and Mary Stuart McGregor. George graduated from Tuxedo High School. After working at the New York Botanical Gardens, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served with General Patton at the Battle of the Bulge in Europe during WWII where he was awarded the Bronze Star. After leaving the service he joined his father in the management of gardening and horticulture for the estate of George Grant Mason in Tuxedo Park, N.Y. George was recognized throughout the metropolitan region for his knowledge in the field. He was a lifetime member of the Tuxedo Horticultural Society, Tuxedo Volunteer Fire Department, and an active member of the American Legion. A devoted and caring son to his mother who died in 1987 at the age of 101, George was a good friend to all who knew him. Predeceased by his brothers, James and Duncan, George is survived by his sister Marie McCarroll, of Tuxedo Park, N.Y., nieces, Leith and Joseph McLoughlin of Southampton, N.Y., Lisa and Vincent King of Cold Spring, N.Y., and nephew, Stuart and Jean McGregor of Coral Gables, Fla. Mitchetti Jr., Marty James Detective Marty James Mitchetti, Jr., a Police Officer with the New Windsor Police Department, died in an off-duty construction accident on June 7, 2005. He was 32. Detective Mitchetti was born on September 21, 1972 in Newburgh to Marty J. Mitchetti, Sr. and Elizabeth Bishop. Marty was a 1991 graduate of Newburgh Free High School and worked as a certified welder at West Point until 1995 when he joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office. He worked at the Sheriff's office as a Police Officer until 1998 when he joined the New Windsor Police Department on January 27, 1998. He served as Patrol Officer and was assigned as a K-9 Officer on February 23, 2001. In February 1999, Detective Mitchetti received the Excellent Police Duty Award for the apprehension of three suspects involved in a robbery and unlawful imprisonment of a local resident. In November 2002 he received the Meritorious Police Duty Award for disarming a suspect with a knife. In 2004 and 2005 he received the Honorable Mention Award. Marty was a member of the New Windsor Police Softball Team, a Third Degree Blackbelt, a fine athlete and a great poker player. His greatest accomplishment was building his own home with his brother, Chris, and his friends. Survivors include his special companion, Christine Muller; loving parents, Marty J. and Elizabeth Mitchetti; loving brother, Chris Mitchetti; and his paternal grandfather, Cosmo Mitchetti. Smith, of Monticello, a homemaker & lifelong resident of the area, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris with her daughters by her side. She was 92. The daughter of the late William & Frances Edwards Eagan, she was born November 11, 1912 in Port Jervis. Claire was a wonderful mother and "Nanny" who will be deeply missed by all of her family and friends. She is survived by her three loving and devoted daughters: Bernice Wagner of Sackett Lake, Shirley Toomey of Forestburgh and Linda Smith of Liberty; 10 grandchildren: Karla, Lynn, Art, Mike, Matt, Anne, Jackie, Pattie, Brian and Brendan; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law: Leslie Smith and Bernard Smith; and many nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by her husband: Walter "Smitty" Smith; a son: Stanley A. Smith; and grandsons: Darren M. Foss and Marcus Joseph. Staples, Spurgeon James Spurgeon James Staples, a taxi driver for Bob's Taxi and All Family Taxi Service in Newburgh, N.Y., died Friday June 3, 2005 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Arden Hill Campus, Goshen, N.Y. He was 62. A 30-year resident of Newburgh, he was the son of the late Reverend Franklin D. Staples and Gladys E. Roden, born December 27, 1942 in Rockford, Ill. He was an Army Veteran. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Boone Staples of Clinton, N.C.; two sons, Roy Lee Holmes of Newburgh, and June Holmes of Poughkeepsie; one daughter, Rene Howard of Goldsboro, N.C.; six brothers: Myron Dunbar Staples and wife, Margaret, Herbert Eugene Staples and wife, Samantha, and Curtis Donnell Staples, all of Miami, Fla., Calvin Frederick Staples and wife, Wanda, and Ralph Lynn Staples and wife, Shauna, all of Newburgh, and Kenneth Irving Staples of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Debra Staples of Newburgh, and Sharon Eileen Staples of Miami, Fla.; sister-in-law, Arlivia Williams Staples of Newburgh; four grandchildren: Franklin Howie Smith Staples, Jr., Jason Staples, Quawnshanay and Tec Smith; several nieces, nephews, many relatives and other friends.
