She was 48. Daughter of the late Frank and Anna Delello Alfidi, she was born on July 28, 1956 in Yonkers. A family statement reads, "Her favorite words were 'Have a nice day', the humor so funny in things she would say, Special she was in her own little way. She would always remember your birthday or any special date, a card or a call was guarantee, she was never late. She now is in Heaven with her father and mother and also now with her favorite brother. Many will miss her just for being that girl, the one with that big smile and black little curls. May you rest in peace and smile that smile above and never forget how much you were loved." Survivors include her stepmother, Barbara Alfidi of Georgia; her brother, Joseph of Belgium; her sister, Jane Alfidi and her husband Alex Dembroski of Plattekill; her niece, Nikie Alfidi; her dear friends, Deborah Layug and Paula Colacchio of Newburgh; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Armstrong, a retired employee at USMA, West Point and longtime area resident, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005 in Brooksville, Fla. He was 98. The son of the late George and Margaret Clisdell Armstrong, he was born February 6, 1907 in New Windsor. He was a life-member of Dan Leghorn Engine Company and past master of Brookside Grange. Survivors include his sons, George Armstrong of Weeki Wachee, Fla. and Edward Armstrong of Derry, N.H.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret "Peg" Armstrong. There will be no visitation. Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at Wallkill Valley Cemetery, Rt 52, Walden. Cantone, Joann JoAnn Cantone, a 36-year resident of Newburgh and retired Special Education teacher at BOCES, passed away Thursday, June 9, 2005 at home. She was 66. Daughter of the late Joseph Monaco and Virginia Cennamo, she was born on November 12, 1938 in Brooklyn. She married John P. Cantone on September 6, 1958 in Brooklyn, who survives at home. JoAnn earned a Bachelor's Degree from Mt. Saint Mary's College and a Master's Degree from C.W. Post College. She was a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church in Newburgh. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, John J. Cantone and his wife Karen; her grandchildren, Joseph Burakowski, Ryan Weale and Isabella Cantone. She was predeceased by her sons, Joseph and Philip Cantone. Cavazza, Lawrence "Larry" Lawrence "Larry" Cavazza, a dress cutter owner/operator of Lawrence Dress, Inc. from 1969 to 1992, and 35-year resident of the area, died June 8, 2005 at his home. He was 74. The son of the late James Cavazza and Angelina Sorrentino, he was born December 3, 1930 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Larry was a member of St. James Church in Milton, N.Y.; a 23-year member of the Knights of Columbus Father Hanley Council in Marlboro; ILGWU in New York City; and member of Plattekill Seniors. A family statement reads: "Dad was a wonderful father and an incredible grandfather. Spending time with his grandchildren gave him pure joy. Dad was a strong man who beat the odds more than once because of his strong will to live. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him and will be missed greatly by his family." He is survived by three sons: Vincent Cavazza and wife, Christine, and Lawrence M. He was 94. A 30-year resident of the area, he was born July 23, 1910 in Cayey, Puerto Rico, to Francisco and Elvira Vidal Collazo. He was a member of Golden Tones, Trinity United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge, where he reached the highest rank. He was also a Boy Scout Leader. Burt was born on Flag Day, June 14, 1932 less than one mile away at his parents, Earl and Maude Norman Cortright's farmstead on laGrange Road in Hamptonburgh. The fifth of five children, Burt pushed his way into Goosetown Schoolhouse (then located next to his parent's home) at the age of four. He attended Goshen High School and graduated as a 49'er. Burt married Johanne Naomi Morse in Middletown on March 1, 1952. Together raised three children while he ran the Clover Knoll Guernsey Farm on Rte. 207 with his father Earl and brother Norman throughout the 50s and into the 60s. Burt and family moved to Montgomery in 1968 during which time he was a union organizer, local electrician and political mover. He served as supervisor of the Town of Hamptonburgh from 1964 to 1965. Burt later became Orange County (Democratic) Election Commissioner from 1974 to 1992 and retired as such. He was a chairman of the Executive Committee for the N.Y.S. Election Commissioners Association. He was executive Secretary of the Orange County Democratic Committee from 1970 to 1981. He was a former member of the Lions Club and the NAACP. He was an avid reader and supporter of various social establishments. Burt returned to Hamptonburgh in 1978 after building his "vacation" home on part of the old Clover Knoll lands. He is survived by his daughter, Holly Collignon; son-in-law, Marc Collignon; son, Michael Cortright; daughter-in-law Claire Cortright; sister Marion; nephew Christopher; grandsons Evin, Sean, Chay and granddaughters, Kasey, Allie and Katharine; various nieces and nephews. Raffaela Dauer passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at the Dutch Manor Nursing Home in Schenectady, N.Y., with loving family at her side. Ray was born in Naples, Italy on November 21, 1907, the daughter of the late Concetta and Andrea Gioia. In 1909, she and her mother followed her father to the USA. They settled in Long Island City, N.Y. where in 1934, she married the late Lawrence T. Dauer. In 1946, the family moved to Upper Nyack, N.Y., where Ray lived until 1996. At that time she relocated to Schenectady to be near her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Ross Stagnitti. For more than 20 years, Ray managed the cafeteria at the Upper Nyack School. In 1985, she became a member of the fund raising team at Nyack Hospital where she worked until retirement. She has been a faithful member of St. Ann's R.C. Church and its Rosary Society since 1945. In recent years, she also belonged to The Immaculate Conception Parish in Schenectady. She is survived by two daughters and their spouses: Alice and Charles Jackson, Wolf Lake, N.Y. and Kathleen and Rose Stagnitti, Schenectady; two sons and their spouses: Harold and Carol Dauer, Hendersonville, Tenn. and Andrew and Maryanne Dauer, S. Myrtle Beach, S.C. Ray has always been especially proud of her 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren. Along with her parents, Ray was predeceased by her husband Lawrence T. Dauer, and infant son, George Dauer, her sister Silvia Pisano and two infant great-grandchildren, Jordan Mosher and Abigail Dauer. Ray was known for her great spirit, loving heart and devotion to family and friends, all of which will live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew her. Dennis Klein, a lifetime Middletown resident, died Wednesday, June 8, 2005 at O.R.M.C. Horton Campus. He was 53 years old. The son of Elsie M. Klein and the late Herbert A. Klein Sr., Dennis was born August 18, 1951 in Middletown. A Veteran of the Vietnam War, Dennis proudly served his country in the United States Marines. He was a life-member of the Marine Corp. League, as well as the VFW, both in Middletown. An avid hunter, Dennis enjoyed spending time outdoors. Leonard H. "Itch" Mapes, Sr., a retired assembler for Ford Motor Co. in Mahwah, N.J. and St. Louis, Mo., died Sunday June 5, 2005. He was 69. The son of the late Ralph H. Mapes and Wanetta Montgomery Mapes, he was born October 24, 1935 in Port Jervis, N.Y. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret "Pat" Carter Mapes. A resident of Hazelwood, Mo. and lifelong resident of Port Jervis, he was a life member of Hose 4, Howard Wheat Engine Co. in the Port Jervis Fire Department. Itch was an avid bowler and member of the Port Jervis Bowling Team; and was inducted into the Bowlers Hall of Fame. Mitchetti Jr., Marty James Detective Marty James Mitchetti, Jr., a Police Officer with the New Windsor Police Department, died in an off-duty construction accident on June 7, 2005. He was 32. Detective Mitchetti was born on September 21, 1972 in Newburgh to Marty J. Mitchetti, Sr. and Elizabeth Bishop. Marty was a 1991 graduate of Newburgh Free High School and worked as a certified welder at West Point until 1995 when he joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office. He worked at the Sheriff's office as a Police Officer until 1998 when he joined the New Windsor Police Department on January 27, 1998. He served as Patrol Officer and was assigned as a K-9 Officer on February 23, 2001. In February 1999, Detective Mitchetti received the Excellent Police Duty Award for the apprehension of three suspects involved in a robbery and unlawful imprisonment of a local resident. In November 2002 he received the Meritorious Police Duty Award for disarming a suspect with a knife. In 2004 and 2005 he received the Honorable Mention Award. Marty was a member of the New Windsor Police Softball Team, a Third Degree Blackbelt, a fine athlete and a great poker player. His greatest accomplishment was building his own home with his brother, Chris, and his friends. Survivors include his special companion, Christine Muller; loving parents, Marty J. and Elizabeth Mitchetti; loving brother, Chris Mitchetti; and his paternal grandfather, Cosmo Mitchetti.
