Lawrence T. Black, a longtime area resident and retired hotel worker, passed away on Sunday March 19, 2005 at Hudson Valley Hospital in Cortlandt Manor. He was 80. The son of John and Gertrude Gleason Black, he was born on December 5, 1924 in New York City. Lawrence was and Army Veteran having served both in World War II and the Korean Conflict. Carbone, John John Carbone, 85, of Boynton Beach, Fla., died on March 20, 2005. Born in Bentlyville, Pa., he lived in North Haledon, N.J. and Chester, N.Y. before moving to Boynton Beach, Fla. in 1990. He graduated from Mohegan Lake Military Academy, Peekskill, N.Y. in 1939. He received a Congressional appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. During his cadet cruise in 1943, he served as a midshipman on the "Liberty Ship SS JAMES BARBER." His ship sailed on the "Murmansk Run," the North Atlantic Convoy Supply cruises to Murmansk, Russia. He graduated from Kings Point as a marine engineer. He was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy in 1943, serving as officer on board the USS OBERON (AKA-14). He was released from active duty in 1945 and was commissioned as an officer in the Army Coast Artillery Corps. He was employed by the United States Post Office in Paterson until leaving in 1956 to become a homebuilder. His company Jay-Cee Home Builders built and developed homes throughout Northern New Jersey for 32 years. He was a licensed real estate broker and a real estate appraiser. John was a member of the Board of Directors of Prospect Park Savings and Loan Association in Haledon. He was a special police officer in North Haledon from 1949 to 1955 and was the founding member of the North Haledon American Legion Post and the Bernard Armitage Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a lifelong Republican and member of the North Haledon Republican Club; member of the North Haledon Board of Education from 1956 to 1962; member of the Manchester Regional High School Board of Adjustment. In 1978, he was elected as Mayor of North Haledon. Beloved husband of Marie Carbone (nee Masker). Devoted father of John M. Carbone and his wife Susan of North Haledon, David B. Carbone and his wife Michelle also of North Haledon and Judith Polli and her husband Daniel of Chester, N.Y. The daughter of Gregory and Mary Cardilli DiCola, she was born March 7, 1930 in Peekskill. She was the widow of Joseph Carlini. Survivors include her two sons, Lawrence P. Carlini of Walden, Joseph L. The son of Basil and Kallippi Xenaria Fikioris, he was born March 1, 1968 in New York City, N.Y. Spyro was a kind and gentle young man who was loved by all. Herschowsky, Julius Julius Herschowsky, former owner of Hershey Tool Company, and 80-plus year area resident, died Monday, March 21, 2005 at Hospice By The Sea, in Boca Raton, Florida, of natural causes. He was 86. The son of the late Samuel Herschowsky and the late Tillie Herschowsky, he was born August 16, 1918 in New York, New York. He was married to the late Sylvia Herschowsky, who passed away on December 2, 2001, and was predeceased by his brother, Irving Hershey. Mr. Herschowsky was the last living charter member of the Accord Fire Company and was also a charter member of the Kerhonkson-Accord First Aid Squad. He was involved in various fire/police fund raising and civic community activities throughout the years and was also a constable. A pillar of the community, he resided in Florida but summered in his home in Kerhonkson, New York until July 2002. Oates and Nannie Sinclair Oates, he was born October 14, 1917 in Kingsport, Tennessee. Mr. Oates was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army, where he was a prisoner of war. He went on to retire after 30+ years as a machine operator for Channel Master in Ellenville. He was also a member of the Community Church of Bloomingburg, VFW Post #4947, Mamakating, and the Bloomingburg Fire Dept.-Fire Police; and was an avid sports fan. "Poppy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who will be sadly missed and always in our hearts." He was a member of Local 137 of the International Union of Operating Engineers for 43 years, retiring in 1986. Stephen was also a member of several Antique and Classic Car Clubs. He was an avid NASCAR Dale Earnhardt fan and D.I.R.T Racing fan. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y. on November 25, 1938 to Edward P. Smith and Ellie C. Graham Smith. He married Carol Detmer of March 27, 1959 in Poughkeepsie. Survivors include his wife at home; son Stephen Smith Jr. of Palm Beach, Fla.; daughter, Kelly Smith-Brunell of Marlboro; grandchildren, Danielle Smith, Robert, Amanda, and Michael Brunell; brothers, Edward P. Smith of Engelwood, Fla., Charles P. Smith of Salt Pt., N.Y., Michael Smith of Wallkill, Robert Smith of Pleasant Valley; sisters, Kathleen White of Sarasota, Fla., Roseann Gasparro of Longwood, Fla., Eileen "Cricket" Smith of Sarasota, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sister, Mora Dvorak and brothers, Andrew J. and Terrance Smith. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 23 at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. Funeral Liturgy of the Word will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 24 at Holy Trinity R.C. Church, Poughkeepsie. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Poughkeepsie.
