O'Brien, retired owner of Spring Street Florist, Middletown, a resident of Wurtsboro, passed away Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, N.Y. He was 75. Born in Middletown, N.Y. on January 14, 1930, he was the son of Albert W. and Vivian Dorothy Van Curen O'Brien. He also worked with Alder's Wholesale Florist, Goshen and was a shop steward with Keiley Mueller Industries, Middletown. He was a former member of Fraternal Order of Eagles # 544, and a 50-plus year member of Eagle Engine Co #2, Middletown. Dad will always be lovingly remembered as the biggest sports fan ever. Though his beloved Mets disappointed more often than not, he remained a loyal fan to the end. He often bragged that he never missed a televised game since the team's inception in 1961. To the chagrin of our mother, he could have probably made the same claim concerning the Nets, Knicks and Giants. Yes, it is for sure that loyalty was Dad's long suit. Each and everyone of us in his family knew that. His loyalty as a husband, father and grandfather was without limit and beyond doubt. In January of this year, he and Mom celebrated 55 years of marriage. Together they raised and loved their family, operated their florist business, and through all of the years, spent hardly a day apart. A devoted and loving father, Dad has been there for his children and grandchildren, always. Not only did we have the security of his love and presence as children, he was unwavering to the end in his devotion and support of his family. We looked to him always, no matter how many years passed, as a pillar of strength and the leader of our family. His death has been sudden and came all too soon. It is impossible for any of us to imagine our lives or a world without him in it. With all of the love we can summon, and all of the tears we can cry, we must now let him go. Wherever the journey takes him next, we hope and pray that he will be waiting there to guide us in that world as he did so well in this. He is survived by his loving wife Susan A. Peters O'Brien at home; his son Neil A. O'Brien and his wife Amy of Beacon; his daughter Donna L. Squicciarini and her husband Frank of Wurtsboro; 4 grandchildren Raymond E. Knapp and his wife Michele of Cuddebackville, Neil A. O'Brien, Shawn O'Brien, Helen O'Brien; daughter-in-law Susan B. O'Brien-Prosychak wife of Robert Prosynchak, all of Middletown; and several nieces and nephews. Following cremation at Oxford Hills Crematory in Chester, graveside services will be Monday, May 9 at 2 p.m. in Westbrookville Cemetery, Westbrookville. Arrangements are under the guidance of Morse Funeral Home Inc., Middletown. Published in the Times Herald-Record on 5/5/2005. Peterson, Abbie Van Siclen Formerly of Middletown, N.Y. Abbie Van Siclen Peterson, a longtime resident of Middletown, died at Elim Care Center, Fargo, N.D. on May 3, 2005. The descendant of Dutch settlers who first arrived in the New World in the 1630's, she was born on February 19, 1918 at home on the family farm in Queens, N.Y. The youngest of the seven children of George E. and Abbie Baxter Van Siclen, she had two sisters who had succumbed to childhood diseases in their first year of life, and Abbie's father donated a stained glass window to their church in thanksgiving for her survival. Abbie attended public elementary school in Hollis, N.Y. and graduated in 1935 from the Cathedral School of St. Mary, an Episcopal girls' high school, where she was an honor student, a hurdler on the track team and an archer. Although she was an excellent student, her parents wanted her to be self-supporting as quickly as possible during the Depression and sent her to secretarial school in New York City rather than college. Her first job was in Manhattan at Rockefeller Center for the movie company now known as Universal Studios. Abbie married Robert F. Peterson, whom she had met at church, on October 18, 1939. They made their home on Long Island until moving in 1958 to Middletown, where her husband, Bob, was employed for many years as an executive at Middletown Savings Bank, and Abbie worked as the administrative assistant to the superintendent of the Orange-Ulster Board of Cooperative Educational Services until her retirement in 1979. She was very proud of her skills in shorthand and typing and was a perfectionist both at work and at home, typing many term papers for her four children in the days before computers and word processing. In 1981, Abbie and Bob retired to Cape Cod, Mass. Following Bob's death in 1997, Abbie moved to Fargo, N.D. to be closer to her daughter, Deborah Peterson Tight, who had graduated from Middletown High School in 1962. Abbie lived in Pioneer House Assisted Living in Fargo from May of 2000 until she entered Elim Care Center in November, 2002. Abbie loved her church work, dressmaking, needlework, dancing with her husband, playing bridge, and reading. She was a loving wife and devoted mother. She is survived by her four children: Abigail Peterson Reilly of Hartford, Conn., Deborah P. Tight of Fargo, N.D., Meredith Peterson Tufts of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass., and Robert A. Peterson of Bethesda, Md.; eight of her nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, and by a grandson, Thomas Tight.
