Wachtell of Tuxedo Park, died peacefully at her home during the night of October 23, 2005 just a week shy of her 86th birthday. She had lived with diabetes and Alzheimer's disease for many years. Born in Vienna, Austria on October 31, 1919 to David and Molly (Schapiro) Hirsch, she came to this country as a young child and grew up in the Bronx, where she began to live the dream of the immigrants of the early 20th century. She took music lessons at Bronx House, a formative experience that opened a whole world to her and that she remembered with fondness and deep appreciation all her life. She graduated from Hunter College, where she majored in music and married Richard Wachtell, a fellow music lover on June 28, 1941. Their first date was a public concert at Lewisohn stadium where they were able to get seats for 25 cents. They remained devoted to each other for 62 years. During her early married life she worked at Altman's, but during World War II moved into the war industry, taking a job at Sperry Gyroscope Company which made the gyro stabilizers used in aircraft instrumentation. Following the war, she became a mother to Nancy Deborah, her only child, and gave piano lessons from her home while raising her daughter. She lived a full life, traveling extensively with her husband, reading, exploring weaving, bookbinding, and antique dealing, playing four hand piano compositions with friends, and writing the Tuxedo Inside Out Cultural Calendar. She is survived by a bother, Abraham Hirsch, her daughter and son-in-law Nancy and William Burstein, and by three grandchildren, Noah, Eve, and Michael Burstein. She was a kind, caring, empathetic woman, with a solid sense of values. One thing she taught was the importance of saying "thank you," because people tend to be very free with complaints, but remain silent when things go smoothly. There will be no public funeral. Should friends or families care to make a donation in her memory, organizations that touched her life include Bronx House, Jewish Family Services of Orange County, Maverick Concerts of Woodstock, New York, Alzheimer's Association, and American Diabetes Association.
