Joseph Campanelli, a longtime resident of Kingston, New York and retired Housing Rehabilitation Specialist with the City of Port Jervis Community Development Agency, passed away on October 1, 2005. Son of the late Dominick and Catherine Campanelli, he was born in Queens on July 14, 1949. Joseph was a graduate of St. Pius X High School in Uniondale, New York and earned a Bachelor's Degree from the New York Institute of Technology. He proudly served his country during the VietNam War in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of the Tri-County Chapter of the NYS Building Officials Conference, Inc. and was certified for New York State building code enforcement. He was the caring husband and best friend of Kathleen, beloved brother of Marie Campanelli and Ann Sicliano, loving uncle to Tara, Vinnie, Nicholas, Jake, Madeline and Luke, and best friend to his dog Montana. Joseph had many good friends and will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humor and kindness. The son of Luis Castro and Secundina Moran, he was born on March 4, 1947 in Puerto Rico. Jose was a baker, working for various hotels in Sullivan County. Costa, Blaise William "Bill" Blaise William "Bill" Costa of New Paltz, former resident of Grand Avenue, Balmville, died Saturday, October 1, 2005 at home with his family. He was born December 10, 1915 in Newburgh, the son of Anthony D. Costa and Josephine Cannistrace. He was a graduate of Newburgh Free Academy. He married Catherine Chrystal on September 7, 1936 and they had celebrated 67 years of marriage when Catherine died in May of 2003. Mr. Costa is survived by three sons: Anthony Costa and his wife, Andrea, Philip Costa and his wife, Margaret, and Kevin Costa; and a daughter, Sheila Mariello and her husband, Anthony. All are from New Paltz. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Costa of Newburgh; two sisters, Joan Costa of Warwick and Theresa Hubbard of Fishkill; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, David; two brothers, Louis Costa and Angelo Costa; and two sisters, Annunciata Costa and Marie Fern. LaPierre, Betsy Rae On October 1, 2005, Betsy LaPierre (Doyle), 28-year resident of Goshen, released the hand that she held throughout life and accepted that which led her into heaven and eternal life. Born May 13, 1931, in Caribou, Maine, to Reginald and Lucille Doyle, Betsy is survived by Leon F., her husband of 54 years, for sons, Lee R. (Dorothy), Barry J. (Ellen), Bruce D. (Beejay), Kerry J. (Christine) and one daughter, Lucie Clemings (William). Her spirit shines brightly through her 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers Reginald and James and her nephews and nieces of the Doyle family. Betsy had been employed as a medical secretary but her life's true undertaking was her family. She raised five children uniquely, dispensing a mix of love and acceptance to all, sprinkled with just the right amount of discipline. Annual visits to "the beach" were a favorite throughout Betsy's life, gatherings which nurtured family closeness for over five decades. A resourceful cook, the famous meals which Betsy served her children are still the subject of both adoration and good -natured humor. She will be greatly missed by all who loved her. McKiernan, Ethel Mary (Smith) Ethel Mary (Smith) McKiernan entered into rest on September 30, 2005 at home with her granddaughter Valerie Bransol in Milford, PA. A life long resident of Haverstraw, NY, she spent her remaining years in Walden, NY and Milford, PA. She was born on January 1, 1915 in Haverstraw, NY to Mary and John Rodzinsky. Lovingly referred to as "Nana", Ethel was a wonderful woman who was an avid Bingo player, member of the 300 Club at Hi-Tor Bowling Lanes in Haverstraw for many years. Ethel put in almost 19 years of faithful service to St. Peter's Church in Haverstraw. She was a proud fan to her great grandchildren's sports in Walden and Milford as well as many school choral concerts. A very independent, strong role model for all who knew and loved her, "Nana" cherished her two cats Missy and Bubba who will miss her very much. We hold dear to our heart all of our memories of the world's best NANA. She is sadly missed by her friends and family and is survived by granddaughters Vicki Gamma and husband, Stephen J. Mary A. Sima of Middletown, a former Suffern resident, passed away October 1, 2005 at the age of 78. Mary was retired from Ciba Geigy in Suffern, N.Y. She is survived by her daughter Joann Berrian and her husband John of Middletown and her son John of Pompton Lakes, N.J. Mary's Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Ascension Chapel in Airmont, N.Y. with burial to follow at the Cemetery of the Ascension in Airmont. There will be no calling hours. Stoltz, a lifelong area resident, died Monday, October 3, 2005 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus. He was 85 years old. The son of the late Michael and Antonina Kolono Stoltz, John was born on March 21, 1920 in New Hampton, N.Y. John proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force and on August 17, 1947, John married the former Ruth Fairweather in St. Joseph's Church. He was employed by Clemsens in Middletown as a shipping manager for 33 years before his retirement. A family statement reads: "John was an avid golfer, gardener and outdoorsman. Even at an older age, he was a wildlife enthusiast and golf mentor for his grandson John." John is survived by two daughters, Lois Juliano of Greentown, Pa., and Anne Baker and her husband, John, of Hollis, N.H.; one son, Michael Stoltz of Kiamesha Lake; two sisters, Mildred Sherlock of Middletown, and Stella Karshner of Aberdeen, N.C.; grandchildren: John M. Stoltz, Brent Stoltz, Sean Baker, Russell Baker, Jennifer Baker Maurhoff Scott Baker, and Dwight Weber; and two great-grandchildren, Alex and Bridget Baker. John was predeceased by his wife of 43 years, Ruth, in 1990; two brothers, Stanley and Walter Stoltz; and one sister, Helen Mazur. Dennis D. Strang, lineman/forman Central Hudson, Highland (1990) and resident for many years, died Monday, Oct. 3, 2005 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. He was 76. The son of P. Lawrence Strang and Lillie Anderson, he was born June 18, 1929 in Platte County, NE. He married Dolores Senecca. He later married Catherine Wardell on Nov. 6, 1988 in New Paltz. He was an Army Veteran (1951-1953). Survivors include his wife Catherine I. Strang of New Paltz; sons, Gary D. and Doreen Strang of New Paltz, Bruce L. and wife Cheryl Strang of Stone Ridge, Michael D. and wife Ana Strang of Winter Haven, Fla., Joseph D. The son of Vincent Wontz and Pauline Wolak Wontz, he was born October 3, 1918 in Pine Island. He was a member and parishioner of Saint Mary's Church, Washingtonville; retired line forman for Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc., Monroe; Executive Board, I.B.E.W., Local 503; Orange and Rockland's 25 Year Club; owned and operated with his wife Frances, The Country Side Inn and The Country Side Liquor Store, both on Route 94 in Salisbury Mills. He was a dairy farmer until 1948. Also owner and officer of the N.C.D. Operating Company, Inc. (the first cable TV company in Blooming Grove in the early 70s - now Time Warner Cable); member of the Village of Washingtonville's Planning Board from Jan 1986 to April 1993; one of the first police officers for the Village of Washingtonville's Police Force under the first police chief, Russell Hallock. Honorary member of the Salisbury Mills Fire Company; life-member of Monroe-Chester Sportsman Club, Inc.; co-chairman of St. Mary's Church Bazaar, Washingtonville Early Fifties; vice president of The Democratic Club, town of Blooming Grove, 1950s; member and former trustee of Monell Engine Company, Washingtonville; charter member and past president of the Holy Name Society, St. Mary's Church; usher at St. Mary's Church. He was the widower of Frances Lasser Wontz. Survivors include son, George V. Wontz and wife Carol of Salisbury Mills; daughter Pauline Scherrer and husband C. Stephen of Blooming Grove; grandchildren, Jonathan G. Wontz and wife Karyn of Salisbury Mills, Stephen Scherrer and wife Leslie of Blooming Grove, Denise Scherrer of Washingtonville, Marsha Morgan and husband Kevin of Blooming Grove, David Scherrer of Washingtonville; three great-grandchildren, Tabitha, Stephen and Dennis Scherrer; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
