He was 94 years old. The P-47, affectionately called "the Jug" was known for being the safest plane to fly during the war. It would often come back from battle with bullet holes and broken wings, but it would not crash. The pilots appreciated its design and its engineers, and they made Mr. Mulholland an honorary Thunderbolt pilot, even though he never flew a plane. Mr. Mulholland was born October 10, 1910 in Newburgh, N.Y., to Edward Mulholland and the former Margaret McCarthy, and was the youngest of six children. In 1978, Mr. Mulholland and his wife, the former Helen Hewel, moved to Amagansett from Dix Hills, N.Y. Ms. Mulholland died shortly thereafter. While visiting his sister in Southampton nuring home, Mr. Mulholland met Mary Hellenbeck, the head nurse there and a widow. The two were married in 1992. Mr. Mulholland, who never had any children, adopted her family, complete with three children and four grandchildren. "He was just marvelous about it. He embraced the whole thing and loved them all," said his stepdaughter, Brigitte M. Lenihan. "He was a gift." Throughout his life, Mr. Mulholland kept up to date with development in aeronautical engineering and with the New York Mets as well. He was also a member of the Irish-American Club, and was an active member of the congregation at Most Holy Trinity Church in East Hampton, N.Y.
