He was 70. Son of the late John D. and Ethel McCauley Barley, he was born January 9, 1935 in Newburgh. He married Daisy Palmer Barley on April 5, 1958 in Moulton Memorial Baptist Church, Newburgh. Walter was a sheet metal worker with the Sam Sassone Company in Newburgh. He was also a member of the Washington Heights Club. He is survived by his loving wife Daisy at home; his sons, Walter Barley Jr., James H. Barley, Richard A. Barley, and Kevin J. Barley, all of Newburgh; his daughters, Irene M. Barley-Rodriguez and Marie L. Barley, both of Newburgh; his brothers, John D. Barley Jr., James H. Barley, and Richard A. Boland, Madgeline Madgeline Boland, retired head of housekeeping at SUNY New Paltz and lifelong area resident, died Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Wingate at Ulster Nursing Home. She was 88. The daughter of Isaac and Ethel Meredith Williamson, she was born January 15, 1917 in Pine Bush. She was the widow of Frank Boland. Survivors include one sister, Bernice McCracking of Montgomery; three grandchildren, John Boland, Robert Boland and Lisa Motley; seven great-grandchildren, Kristin, Michael, Thomas John, Zachery, William, Nathaniel and Carson; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, John "Jack" Boland; two brothers, Isaac "June" Williamson and Frederick "Dick" Williamson; and sister Ruth Klein. Grenier, a mental therapy aide at Middletown Psychiatric Center in Middletown, died Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, N.Y. She was 58. The daughter of Robert McKinlay and Gloria Campagnano McKinlay, she was born July 14, 1947 in the Bronx. A family statement reads, "She enjoyed cooking, sewing and playing cards with Cathie and Mrs. Peters. Her children and grandchildren were her life. She had a heart of gold and was a warm and caring individual." Gridley, Inez George Inez George Gridley, writer teacher, historian, died Monday, October 10, 2005 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, N.Y. She was 97. Born February 25, 1908 at Red Hill, Ulster County, Daughter of Andrew and Juliana Hanford George. She was predeceased by her husband of over 50 years, Vernon H. Gridley Sr. She is survived by her children: Carol and Daniel Smythe of Grahamsville, Vernon and Lucy Gridley of Liberty, Linda and Brad Lane of Claremont, N.H., grandchildren: Jennifer Ballard, Robert Jones, Andrew Jones, Timothy Gridley, Lori Anne Wolkoff and great-grandchildren: Jean Claude Ballard, Kris Ballard, Jake Gridley, Ryan Gridley, Lauren Jones and Devan Jones, her sister-in-law Carol Davis, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by four sisters: Esther George, Ruth Murray, Linda Smith and Dorothy Grey and two grandsons: Vernon Haver Gridley, III and Charles Haver Gridley. She was a published writer of poetry and history and had co-authored several books on history including Brass Buttons & Leather Boots and Time & the Valley. Her books of poetry in print included Journey from Red Hill and Pitfalls & Promises, which was written when she was 92. She was Town of Neversink Historian for 16 years. She began writing poetry as a young woman and co-founded the Alchemy Club, which has nurtured poets from the 1930s to the present. Her poetry was published in many national magazines and newspapers throughout the years, including the New York Times, the New York Herald Tribune and the Saturday Evening Post. Her community involvement included being one of the original group that was instrumental in the fight to bring a high school to Grahamsville. She was the first District Clerk for that school which is now called the Tri Valley Central School. She also was one of the founders of the Townsman, the volunteer community newspaper which still serves the Tri-Valley area. She was a teacher whose first school was a one-room school at Greenville, Ulster County. Her last school was the Tri Valley Central School, where she taught elementary school. While still teaching, she was named Delta Kappa Gamma, a national honor society for teachers. A graveside service will be held at the Claryville Cemetery, Claryville, N.Y. on October 18, 2005 at 11 a.m. A memorial service will be held in the spring. Heater, Michael Michael Heater, 46, of Seminole, Fla., formerly of Middletown, entered into rest on Monday, October 3, 2005. He was born December 30, 1958 in Middletown, son of the late John Heater and Mary Ann Watt. He was a Graduate of Middletown High School. Michael was very involved in school sports. He was an avid cook, an NY Yankees fan and loved collage basketball. Lauterborn, Anna Anna Lauterborn, a resident of Middletown, formerly of the Bronx, died on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at Orange Regional Medical Center, Horton Campus, in Middletown. She was 94. She was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Redejko Borys. A family statement read: "A loving wife and devoted mother and grandmother, she will be remembered for her kindness and great faith in the Lord. She loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed helping new mothers when her great-grandchildren were brought home from the hospital. Meci, founder and co-owner of AVC Hearing Aid Center of Middletown, N.Y., died on Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at home. He was 75. The son of the late Salvatore and Angelina Rene Meci, he was born on February 26, 1930 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Peter began his college studies at Brooklyn College, then he joined the Navy. After he was discharged from the Navy, Peter enrolled at the Columbia College of Chiropractic in New York, then transferred to a smaller chiropractic college in Indianapolis, IN. In Indianapolis, he met his wife, Bette Lee Bleser. Peter practiced as a chiropractor for 13 years and then gave up his practice to work in the hearing aid dispensing business. He took some courses at New York City Community College on hearing aid dispensing and later opened AVC Hearing Aid Center, Inc., with Bette, and their two sons. In 1974, he joined the New York State Hearing Aid Society (also known as the Hearing Healthcare Alliance of NY) and served as president in 1981. Then he joined the International Hearing Society (IHS) and he served as treasurer and governor of the North East Territory for nine years. He established, and served as chair, for the Advocacy Alliance for the IHS, a special fund to support all government relations activities and related legal defense. Peter found great joy in delivering better hearing to his patients. Peter was an active member of Middletown Kiwanis, and served as president from 1982-83. Peter and Bette studied Vedic teaching, an Eastern philosophy, religion and metaphysics for 46 years. Their teacher, Dr. Beck Pati Sinha, together with a small group of dedicated disciples, formed the Vedic Society of America. When they lived in Brooklyn, they attended classes with him many times during the week. Now that he resides in Los Angeles, the Meci's call Dr. Sinha every Sunday evening to receive their lesson. They studied the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. Bette and Peter traveled three times to India on extended tours, staying and traveling with friends in New Dehli, Bombay and Calcutta. They had the honor of meeting Mother Theresa and the good fortune of visiting every major city in India. Peter conducted both his business and his life under the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as as you would have others do unto you." Peter was dedicated to helping his family through his love and work. Peter always had an interest in vitamins and nutrition, and studied the subject endlessly. He also knew the value of laughter in daily health. He and Bette performed laughter therapy to nursing home residents and senior citizens clubs. He is survived by his wife Bette Lee, at home, two sons; Norman V. Meci and his wife Cherie and Dean T. Meci all of Middletown; daughter Lucinda Matthews and her husband Andrew of Dellaplane, VA; sisters, Rose Pranzo and her husband Gary of Valley Stream, NY and Katherine Lazzaro of West Babylon, NY; grandchildren, Kaiya Thomas, Joshua S. Meci, and Alexandra, Elle, Jesse and Samuel Mattews; and brother in law, Paul Tesauro and his family. Peter was predeceased by one sister, Vivien Tesauro. She was 43. The daughter of the late Richard C. Morrissey and Frances C. Weyant Morrissey, she was born September 11, 1962 in Newburgh. Survivors include her son, Geoffrey D. Paterno, of Blooming Grove, a Roman Catholic Priest for the past 41 years and a longtime resident of the area, went home to the Lord on October 10, 2005 at St. Luke's Roosevelt Medical Center, New York, N.Y. Fr. Paterno was 67 years of age. The son of the late Rosario and Rose Pernice Paterno, he was born on May 12, 1938 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Fr. Paterno was ordained for the Diocese of Brooklyn on May 30, 1964. He served as a Parish Priest in St. Lucy, St. Bernadette, and St. Mary, Mother of Jesus. In 1988 he earned his doctorate from New York University. Thereafter, he taught at Dominican College, Mount Saint Mary College, Mercy College and SUNY New Paltz, Burke High School and two of Orange County Correctional Facilities. He also authored a book on Theology. During his teaching years, he simultaneously assisted as a parish priest in St. Mary's R.C. Church in Washingtonville and St. Columba R.C. Church in Chester, where he became part of the fabric of the parish. The Rev. Thomas J. Curley, Pastor of St. Columba R.C. Church and a close friend to Fr. Paterno noted that, "Fr. Paterno was a spiritual leader in the Orange County Community. His gentle manner and understanding afforded him the ability to speak to all people and relate to the individual as a person. His true gift was his warm smile and kind demeanor which reflected his love of God to all of his students and parishioners. He will be missed by all those he helped and by all those who benefited from his ministry." Fr. Anne Powers, a resident of Milton, N.Y. since 1966, previously of Highland, N.Y. died peacefully at her home on October 11, 2005. She was 86. The daughter of James Roberts and Sarah Murray, Anne was born on August 5, 1918 in Newfoundland, Canada. She married Angus J. Powers on June 28, 1942 in Brooklyn. He died on January 6, 1969. She was a member of St. James Church in Milton. Anne will be remembered as a loving mother and a gentle kind friend to so many people throughout her life. A devout Catholic, her love for God so strong; the faith that she and our late father taught us was the importance of following his ways with confidence and courage.
