Fino, Jean Jean Fino, 94, a lifelong resident of Milton, went home to the Lord on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center after a courageous 81/2-year battle with Alzheimer's surrounded by her children. The suffering she endured patiently has ended. Truly, this "Silent Saint" is now at peace with the Lord. Born January 2, 1911 in Milton, N.Y., she was the fifth child of nine born to Rachel DelMonico and Thomas Casaburo. She lived her entire life in the town she called "My Town", Milton - no farther than one mile from the place of her birth off Willow Tree Road, which she called "my road." Mom would never think of leaving Milton and loved the fruit farm her father had carved out of the woods. She never lost her love of the great outdoors and for farming. After attending high school, Jean spent a major part of her adult life working on her parent's fruit farm with her sisters and brothers and her cousins, the Flauto family. She then took a position working for IBM in Kingston for 20 years. She retired in 1976 and spent most of her later years tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, which she shared generously with everyone, canning, and making pasta for which she was well-known. Caring for her mother until her early 50s, she never married until she met a widower William A. Fino Sr. at a St. James church bazaar. They were married April 1962 at St. James. Lovingly and selflessly, as if they were my own she would say, she raised and cared for his three children who survive: Ronald A. Fino of Milton with whom she made her home; JoAnn R. Masti and husband Henry of Vestal, N.Y.; and William Fino Jr. and wife Judy of Poughkeepsie. Her husband predeceased her in October 1976. She is also survived by two brothers, James and Charles Casaburo of Highland, three grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Five sisters and one brother died previously: Ann Rosasco, Julia Dirago, Rachel Randzin, Marie Pacella, Catherine Bonahue, and Jerry Casaburo. She left her marks in this world by selflessly caring for others and she had a strong sense of family, devoting much of her time caring for them, especially in times of sickness. She spent a great deal of time caring for her sister Julia Dirago, whom she loved dearly. She was a member and past president of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. James Church and looked forward to the weekly Marlboro/Milton Senior Citizen meetings until her illness kept her at home. She was a 94-year member of St. James Church in Milton, which she called "My Church." Jean will lie in repose at St. James Roman Catholic Church, State Road, Milton, N.Y., on Friday, September 23 from 3 until 9 p.m., at which time friends and relatives may pay their respects. A vigil service will be held at 8 p.m. in the church. On Saturday, September 24 at 10 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated by the pastor Mom loved, the Reverend Frederick Kempfirl and Fr. David DeSimone, Vassar Hospital Chaplin at St. James. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Marlboro. The family would like to express personal gratitude for the dedication of Dr. William Heffernan for Mom's care. His tireless efforts in caring for Mom throughout her many illnesses will never be forgotten. He is truly a vessel of God's healing and love. The response to every request by the entire staff at Highland Family Health is deeply appreciated. A special thanks to Ann for her many assists. Additionally, gratitude is expressed to the nurses from Ulster Home Health Services of Kingston and the loving care Mom received from the Circle 5 nurses at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. MaMa, we will never stop loving you...The world is a better place because you passed through it. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the DiDonato Funeral Home, Route 9-W Marlboro, New York. Published in the Times Herald-Record on 9/22/2005.
