GALUSHA, aged 57 years, resident of Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY; mother's application for army pension; stated she was the widow of JOHN GALUSHA and mother of REUBEN C. GALUSHA; that there is no public record of her marriage and the best evidence of her marriage is "the affidavits of persons who have been acquainted with her and her said husband, and the sworn statement of PERMELIA ROSE who saw her when she was married, to wit. on the 9th day of April 1826 at the town of Watervliet in Albany County in the state of New York"; signed by her mark X. Affidavit of witnesses-- PERMELIA ROSE, resident of Cohoes, Albany Co, NY and CHARLES S. DOUGLASS, resident of Waterford, Saratoga Co, NY; "the said PERMELIA ROSE for herself states, that she was present when said ANNA M. GALUSHA was married to said JOHN GALUSHA in the town of Watervliet in Albany County, that her maiden name was ANNA M. ROSE and have been well acquainted with her ever since and the said CHARLES S. DOUGLASS for himself says he has known both the said ANNA M. and JOHN GALUSHA for more than ten years, that they lived and co-habited together as man and wife during that time." Aug 22, 1864--AMOS LIDDEN, ALBERT LAWTON and CHARLES TWOGOOD, residents of Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY; stated that they were well acquainted with ANNA M. GALUSHA and her son, REUBEN C. GALUSHA; that they "know the circumstances of her and her family well - that she is in poor and needy circumstances and that her son MICHAEL now residing with her is not an able bodied man, but only partially able to perform manual labor, and has been in such condition for several years. That the said REUBEN was an able bodied man at the time of his enlistment as each of these deponents believe and that he was the main support of his said mother the said ANNA M. GALUSHA and has been her main suport since he entered the service of the United States by sending her money at various times with which she paid her house rent, purchased flour and other necessary articles. That she has been obliged to work out in the open field pulling flax, and also to take in washing since her son's death, but now is unable to do that being considerably infirm from old age. That she is now considerably bent over, and walks in a manner indicating much infirmity. That she lives in a very humble manner, neither possesses nor owns any property but a few articles of the plainest furniture and wearing apparel and a cow. That she is a highly respectable woman and very industrious as far as her age and infirmity will enable her to labor. That her son MICHAEL a single man who now resides with her is not an able bodied man and has a weakness in his back or hips and has had for several years, which disqualifies him for continued labor. That she has no other means of support than the employment of her own hands as the little that her said son MICHAEL earns is not more than enough to support himself. That she is the widow of JOHN GALUSHA who died at the said town of Pittstown on the 21st day of September 1861 and that her crippled daughter NANCY JANE GALUSHA died on the 6th day of December 1863 and who was one of the family of said ANNA M. GALUSHA from her birth to the time of her death." Signed AMOS LIDDEN, CHARLES TWOGOOD, ALBERT LAWTON. Aug 23, 1864--ANNA M. GALUSHA, aged 57 years, resident of Pittstown, Rensselaer Co, NY; stated that she "is the widow of JOHN GALUSHA, and mother of REUBEN C. GALUSHA who was killed in action on the 1st day of July 1863 at or near Gettysburgh [sic]...that her husband the said JOHN GALUSHA died on the 21st day of December 1861 at the said town of Pittstown - that at the time of the enlistment of the said REUBEN C. GALUSHA in said company, he was living with her and had so lived from his birth and was then & there her main support and dependance - that he worked out by days work, on a farm or farms adjoining or nearly so the residence of this deponent, and from his earnings contributed constantly to the support of this deponent & her family by paying her house rent and in the purchase of the necessaries of life for her & her said family - that at the time of his said enlistment, she had residing with her a crippled daughter NANCY JANE GALUSHA a twin sister of the said REUBEN, who had not the use of her limbs and had been in such condition for several years. Also another son MICHAEL GALUSHA, about 24 years of age - that these three persons constituted her family - that said NANCY JANE died on the 6th day of December 1863 - that her said son MICHAEL is an invalid and has been so for many years, and is only able to do but little manual labor and resides with her - that herself and the said MICHAEL now constitute her family. "That her son MICHAEL is not able to support her; although he earns a few dollars in the course of the year - that a few articles of the necessaries of life as wood for fuel &c have been given her by charitable neighbors. That she has been obliged to work out doors in the field pulling flax since the death of her son, but that now she has grown so infirm from age, that she is unable to do even that. That she is fifty-seven years of age and upwards and owns no real property nor no personal property except a few articles of very plain furniture and wearing apparel and one cow - that she hires the apartments she now resides in with her said son for the sum of twenty five dollars per year which is as cheap rent as she is able to get in the town where she resides. "That her said son REUBEN contributed to her support during the entire term he was in the army of the United States, up to the time of his death which was about 18 months. That during that time she received from him the sum of ninety dollars of his earnings. That he sent her first from Washington the sum of thirty dollars by JAMES JOHNSTON a private citizen in June 1862, thirty dollars in January 1863, fifteen dollars in April 1863 and fifteen dollars more in May 1863. That all but the first named sum of money was sent to her by mail - that with these sums of money she paid her house rent and purchased her flour and other necessary articles and that she depended upon what he sent her to pay such rent & to purchase many of the necessaries of life - that she has no other means of support, only what she does herself with her own hands and the little that her son MICHAEL contributes, which is but little if any more than his share of the family expenses."
