All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.org/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.org/ny/nyfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Jan Jordan jnrose@webtv.net August 3, 2006, 8:53 pm See Below George Sharp's son's application for military pension: GEORGE SHARP PENSION APPLICATION State of New York Rensselaer County ss On this Eighteenth day of January 1844 personally appeared in open court before the Justices of the Justice Court in the City of Troy, now in session George Sharp a resident of Greenbush in the County & State aforesaid aged Eighty six years who being first duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress passed june 7th 1832. That he was in the service of the United States under the following officers and served as herein after ? That he entered the service in the fall of the year 1776 under his father Captain George Sharp, Lieutenants John Fonda & George Berringer and Ensign John ? in the first Company of the 6th Regiment of Infantry commanded by Stephen ? Schyler, Lieutenant Colonel Henry K Van Rensselaer, & Major Lane ? also a Major Fonda entered and mustered at the City of Albany and was attached to and belonged to General Ten Broecks brigade. That immediately after being so mustered the company? and marched to Fort Ann in pursuant of such orders, that it was understood that the British were on their way down the Lake - remainded at and about Fort Ann for several days and continued in the neighborhood for several weeks and returned to winter quarters in the month of November or beginning of December of the year aforesaid, and continued so in quarters until the month of March of the year 1777 when the reported? ? of the approach of the British we were again ordered to the north and arrived again at Fort Ann were in that section of Country until after the retreat of the army to Saratoga where this deponents company was in the Battle of Saratoga and the Capture of Burgoyne & his army. In the year 1778 deponent was again in the service and also in 1779, 1780, & 1781. All the time under Captain George Sharp as before mentioned. After the capture of Burgoyne the Service rendered by this deponent was ? calls to suppress the ? of Tories and Indians _ And his is certain & positive that the Service in duration was in the whole one year and upwards _ and is therefore willing ?confident that he was in the service one year _ That he has no documentary ? of his services. And he further declares that the reason why he has not before made this application is because he felt, it is his duty to refrain from asking or receiving charity as he considered himself the reach of want and therefore the asking or taking a pension was not satisfactory to his fellings but having become convinced that his view in this particular ? erroneous and his ability to provide for himself becoming doubtful he is now ? to ask for the relief given to faithful soldiers who served their country in its greatest need. He was brother to my ancestor, Jeremiah Sharp [1776-1853] married Catharine Goewey.
