Roswell Candee Cooley Obituary OLD CUSTOMS EMPLOYEE DEAD --- Roswell C. Cooley, for Thirty-two Years in Service, Expires in East Orange --- Roswell Candee Cooley, who for thirty-two years had been connected with the United States customs service in New York and who for twenty years had been acting deptuy collector of customs, died yesterday at his residence, 100 North Nineteenth street, East Orange, of heart disease. He had been ill a week. His term of service was one of the longest of any man in the department. Mr. Cooley was born in Pompeii [Pompey], N. Y., sixty-two years ago. Early in life he engaged in the banking business in Buffalo, but lost his fortune in the panic of Black Friday [1873?]. He then went to New York and seccured a position in the custom house. He lived in East Orange for several years, but fifteen years ago moved to Staten Island, returning to East Orange two months ago. He is survived by his wife, three sons and three daughters. the funeral services at his late residence to-morrow night will be conducted by Rev. Dr. John A. Chambliss, of Plainfield, formerly pastor of the Hawthorne Aenue Baptist Church, East Orange. [from Newark (N.J.)
