STEPHEN DiTOMMASO, 60 Butcher enjoyed walking, driving Cadillacs Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Stephen T. DiTommaso, 60, of Annadale, died Friday in Cabrini Medical Center, Manhattan, of lung cancer. Mr. DiTommaso was born in Brooklyn and moved to Long Island before settling in Annadale four years ago. He worked as a butcher in Long Island, retiring in 2001. A graduate of Grady High School in Brooklyn, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Queens. Mr. DiTommaso loved cars and would only drive a Cadillac. He also liked to exercise, regularly taking walks. He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot. Surviving are his son, Anthony DiTommaso; his daughters, Rosemarie DiMaio and Phyllis Shear; his brother James DiTommaso; his sister, Nancy Rizzo; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be today from the John Vincent Scalia Funeral Home, Eltingville, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Flushing, Queens. RUTH LANDAU, 96 Telephone supervisor embroidered on canvas Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Ruth V. Landau, 96, of Castleton Corners, a retired telephone operator and supervisor, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. Born Ruth V. Volkert in Stapleton, she was brought to Castleton Corners in 1920. Mrs. Landau graduated from PS 29, Castleton Corners, and attended Port Richmond High School. She worked for the former New York Telephone Co., now Verizon, for 33 years. Mrs. Landau was a telephone operator on Staten Island and then became a management supervisor in Manhattan, scheduling routes and rates for long distance calls. She retired in 1974. Mrs. Landau was a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. She began bowling at age 70 and continued until she was 94. Mrs. Landau also loved to dance, bake and entertain. According to her family, she was very good at sewing counted-cross stitch embroidery and made beautiful works of art on canvases imported from Norway. Mrs. Landau was a member of Castleton Hill Moravian Church, Castleton Corners, and had been a member of the Christmas bazaar committee for many years. Her husband of 38 years, George, died in 1965, and her son, George R., died in 1987. Mrs. Landau is survived by her daughter, Ruth C. Hartell; four grandsons, and four great-grandchildren. PHILIP McCONNELL, 72 Milkman enjoyed playing pool Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Philip Dominic McConnell, 72, of Wilmington, N.C., a former Staten Islander and retired milkman, died Sunday in New Hanover Regional Medical Center, Wilmington. Born in Rochester, Minn., he joined the U.S. Navy when he was 18 years old and served as a quartermaster aboard the USS Eaton. After his service, he moved to the Concord/Stapleton area, then moved to Grasmere in 1989. He relocated to Wilmington in 1992. Mr. McConnell worked as a milkman for many years before becoming a driver at the South Beach Psychiatric Center for 10 years. He retired in 1992. He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club. Mr. McConnell was an avid pool player and loved to travel. He was a parishioner of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Wilmington. His first wife, the former Lorraine Boone, died in 1982. Surviving Mr. McConnell are his wife of 15 years, the former Jeanne Von Schondorf; his two sons, David and Howard; two stepsons, Paul and Philip Von Schondorf; a stepdaughter, Laura Whalen; two brothers, Mark and Kevin; a sister, Barbara Jean Ristau; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Mr. McConnell's son, Timothy, and daughter, Colleen Boncoraglio, both died in the early 1990s. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Andrews Mortuary, Wilmington, with a service at 2 p.m. in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. Arrangements include cremation. HENRY KAVANAGH, 92 Army aviation technician, mechanic Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Henry (Harry) Kavanagh, 92, of Brooklyn, a U.S. Army veteran and mechanic, died yesterday in Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Dongan Hills, where he lived since July 2003. Born in Coney Island, Brooklyn, Mr. Kavanagh was the youngest of six children. He was educated in Brooklyn public schools and attended James Madison High School, but left in the middle of his senior year to help support his widowed mother and four sisters when his older brother married. He had been elected senior class president that year. For more than 45 years, Mr. Kavanagh worked as a Class A automotive mechanic, interrupted only by his service in the U.S. Army. From 1942 to 1946, he was an aviation technician stationed in Tallahassee, Fla. Mr. Kavanagh was discharged as a staff sergeant and resumed working for the former Richard Buick in Brooklyn. While there, he was the shop steward for members of Local 259 of the United Auto Workers. He retired in 1975. Described as an all-around athlete by his family, Mr. Kavanagh excelled in basketball. For more than 50 years, he was a parishioner of Resurrection R.C. Church in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn. Mr. Kavanagh is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Ruth Olive Knowles; his son, John Henry; his daughter, Patricia Kavanagh Dellomo; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter. HELEN PELLETIER, 84 Travel enthusiast, seamstress enjoyed cooking Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Helen Mary Pelletier, 84, a travel enthusiast who took extensive vacations, died Saturday of lymphoma in Hospice Care House, Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness, Fla. Born Helen Mary Morales in Split, Yugoslavia, in 1920, she immigrated to Columbia Heights, Brooklyn, in 1922. Mrs. Pelletier moved to Richmond in 1924 and lived there until 1974. She loved living on Staten Island when she was a child, her family said. From 1974 to 1976 she lived in various seasonal homes, including one in Crystal River, Fla., and another in Fort Ann, N.Y. All she wanted was a view of the Copeland pond, and she got just that, said her daughter, Michele Aue. In 1994, Mrs. Pelletier relocated to Albuquerque, New Mexico, then to Ledgewood, N.J, in 2001, before settling in Inverness, Fla. five months ago. The 1938 graduate of New Dorp High School worked at the Federal Reserve Bank in Manhattan in 1961 for a year. Mrs. Pelletier used her savings to enjoy extensive vacations in San Diego, New Mexico, Arizona, Italy, Thailand, Japan, Hawaii, the Philippines and Yugoslavia. She was an expert seamstress and skilled at needlepoint and floral embroidery, which she displayed in her home. She also enjoyed cooking, her specialty being spaghetti sauce. Mrs. Pelletier was a parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Ledgewood, N.J. Her husband of 63 years, David C., died in 2004. In addition to her daughter, Michelle, Mrs. Pelletier is survived by her son, Fred; her daughters, Elena Pelletier and Andrea Thompson; nine grandchildren and and six great-grandchildren. FILOMENA CARFORO, 86 Laundry presser kept hearty vegetable garden Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Filomena Carforo, 86, of Westerleigh, a homemaker and former laundry presser, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born Filomena LaDiana in Bari, Italy, she was brought to Staten Island as a child, living first in Port Richmond. She settled in Westerleigh in 1953. Mrs. Carforo worked for about three years as a presser with the former Blue and White Laundry in Port Richmond, during World War II before leaving the workforce to raise a family. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially making pastries and cakes during the holidays. "She made everything; she lived for her family," said her daughter-in-law, Julie Carforo. Mrs. Carforo enjoyed working in her garden and grew tomatoes, basil and other vegetables and fruits in her backyard. "Her main thing was tomatoes, she grew the biggest tomatoes," added her daughter-in-law. Mrs. Carforo was a dedicated fan of the soap opera, "Guiding Light." She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-granddaughter. "She was an old Italian lady. She was old school. Everything was her family," said her daughter-in-law. Mrs. Carforo was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton. Her husband of 48 years Anthony, died in 1992. Surviving are her two sons, Robert and Patrick; two brothers, Philip and Alfred LaDiana; a sister, Alice Surko; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. ALDO FURETTI, 89 Army veteran fought in Battle of the Bulge Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Aldo Furetti of Castleton Corners, a self-employed real estate agent, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. He was 89. Born in Manhattan, he moved to Concord in 1929 and to Castleton Corners in 1956. Mr. Furetti owned Manor Agency, a real estate firm in Castleon Corners, from 1947 until he retired in 1981. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army from December 1943 to April 1946, attaining the rank of sergeant. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge as a member of Patton's 3rd Army, 26th Division, 101st Infantry Regiment, Company I, Yankee Division . Mr. Furetti was a life member of the North Shore Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Westerleigh; Gold Star Post, American Legion, Travis; and the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, Staten Island chapter, where he served as treasurer. He was an honorary member of the Catledge Hunting Club, Masonville, N.Y.; Richmond Boro Gun Club, where he served as treasurer for almost 50 years; and Staten Island Sportsman Club, where he was a former treasurer. Until recently, Mr. Furetti competed weekly with rifle shooting teams on Staten Island, where he'd often place first, second or third, said his wife of 49 years, the former Mary Ann Forte. As a young man, Mr. Furetti was a competitive ice skater and dancing roller skater. He was also a member of various bowling teams on Staten Island and owned and rode his motorcycle for 18 years, his wife said. He enjoyed gardening, as well as hunting in the Catskills, Maine and North Carolina, his wife said. Mr. Furetti was a parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners. The funeral will be Thursday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa's Church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Castleton Corners.
