FRANK GOODELL, 91 Began 38-year practice out of his Sunnyside home Friday, November 04, 2005 By STEPHEN HART ADVANCE STAFF WRITER Dr. Frank E. Goodell was a lot of things to a lot of people -- from a local sports icon to a trusted physician to an experienced voice of reason. But when family members and friends reflected on the lifelong Staten Islander, who died yesterday at the age of 91 in Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Castleton Corners, their sentiments were very similar. For everyone who knew him, Dr. Goodell was...A gentle giant. Supremely loyal. A wall of strength. He was a man of few words. But when he spoke, you knew he meant what he said, said Fred Olivieri, head football coach at Curtis High School, a program Dr. Goodell starred in some 70 years ago, and continued to support through the generations. For the last decade, Curtis has presented the Doc Goodell Award for sportsmanship and dedication to a worthy player at the team's awards dinner. Born in West Brighton, Dr. Goodell resided for 82 years on the same block on Clove Road in Sunnyside, before entering the Clove Lakes center in July of last year. He graduated from Curtis in 1935, earning all-city honors in football three times. Dr. Goodell played quarterback in head coach Al Fabbri's single-wing attack, leading the Warriors to a 20-4-1 record from 1933-1935, including an 8-0 mark and a city title. But he earned an athletic scholarship to the University of Pittsburgh because of his versatility. A strong runner who doubled as a defensive back, Dr. Goodell's biggest impact came via his toe, back in the day when games were decided by PAT kicks and the field position set up by punts. In 1999, Dr. Goodell was selected by the Advance as the First Team punter/kicker for the Island's All-Century high school football team. CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM At Pittsburgh, Dr. Goodell was a member of the 1937 national championship team that finished 9-0-1, and played in the same backfield as All-America running back Marshall Goldberg. He earned a varsity letter in football in 1939, and also played baseball at the school. Dr. Goodell graduated from Pittsburgh in 1940 with a bachelor of science degree in education. He remained involved in football, returning to Staten Island as a volunteer assistant coach for both Andy Barberi at Curtis and Sal Somma at New Dorp High School. He was on the verge of playing pro ball with the Brooklyn foorball Dodgers, coached by his former Pitt mentor Dr. (Jock) Sutherland, when World War II broke out. In 1942, Dr. Goodell joined the Merchant Marine Academy, but was soon transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard and eventually to the U.S. Navy, where he earned the rank of lieutenant commander before receiving his discharge in October 1947. It was also in 1942 that he married Pittsburgh native Elizabeth (Betty) Keefer, whom he met in college. The couple moved around during Dr. Goodell's military tenure -- from Great Neck, L.I., to Pass Christian, Miss., to Philadelphia -- before settling in Sunnyside in 1947. Back home, Dr. Goodell set his sights on his career. He completed some prerequisite courses at Wagner College, Grymes Hill, before enrolling in New York School of Podiatry in 1950. Four years later, after earning his degree, he began his 38-year practice out of his home before moving to an office across the street. He also worked at the podiatry clinics at Sea View and St. Vincent's hospitals and at Snug Harbor, taking care of retired sailors. Dr. Goodell was a life member of the New York State Podiatry Society and a member of the American Podiatry Society. 'MR. CURTIS' Bert Levinson, a basketball and baseball coach at Curtis from 1956-1974, recalled how if any of his players had injuries to their feet, Dr. Goodell would take care of them, free of charge. The same with members of their family. You couldn't ask for a finer man, said Levinson, who had season tickets with Dr. Goodell and Barberi for New York Giants football games for well over 20 years. He was a wonderful friend. He was like 'Mr. Curtis' for so many years. He never forgot his Staten Island roots, said friend Dr. Eugene Mosiello. He was always willing to teach and help out any time. 'Doc' was a supreme supporter of our youth. Dr. Goodell was a member of the Curtis High School Alumni Association and a former president of the Curtis Block C Club. And he kept tabs on the progress of Pittsburgh football over the years -- including a return to the school in 1999 to take part in festivities prior to the final game in old Panther Stadium. Dr. Goodell always remained involved in sports -- whether it was coaching baseball in St. Teresa's Little Pro League, assisting his former teammate Mickey Sullivan when the latter was Wagner College head football coach, or lending his wisdom to the Staten Island Baseball Oldtimers and to the Advance's advisory board committee for high school football. He also served the youth of the community through his 40-year involvement with the Boy Scouts, namely St. Teresa's Troop 37, where he was a Scoutmaster and later Scoutmaster Emeritus. READY FOR A TRIP A religious man, Dr. Goodell was a lifelong parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners, and a member of Phi Kappa Theta national Catholic fraternity while at Pittsburgh. He was also a member of St. Teresa's Holy Name Society and its Golden Age Club. He and his wife enjoyed traveling -- cruising to the Panama Canal, Alaska, Nova Scotia and the Caribbean. From canoeing with the Boy Scouts to visiting his grandchildren, he was always ready to go on a trip, said his daughter, Mary Ann McLeod. Just last week, he was asking to go to Atlantic City. He never lost his sense of humor, always being the first one to get a joke, his daughter added. A few months ago, he was so impressed with his granddaughters taking digital photos and immediately displaying them on the computer that he turned to my mom and said, 'Let's get one of those.' For all of his achievements, he never bragged or talked about himself, said Mosiello. He let others speak about him. To his wife of 63 years, Dr. Goodell was not only a gentleman, but a gentle man. In addition to his wife and daughter, Dr. Goodell is survived by his four sons, Frank Jr., Harry, Edward and Patrick; a sister, Madeline Goodell Robotti; 10 grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. The funeral will be Monday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa's Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton. ANGELINA BORYK, 92 New Dorp High School cook liked dancing, traveling Friday, November 04, 2005 Lifelong Rosebank resident Angelina J. Boryk, 92, a retired cook, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. The former Angelina J. Cassella began her career as a cook at New Dorp High School, where she was employed by the former city Board of Education. In 1985, she began washing dishes for the Arrochar Senior Club, of which she was a member. She retired 13 years later, at the age of 85. Mrs. Boryk was a member of the Mount Carmel Society in Rosebank, and enjoyed attending parties and taking trips to Atlantic City with the Arrochar Senior Center. She loved card games and played bingo about once a week at various Staten Island venues. Until her husband of 44 years, Michael, died in 1980, Mrs. Boryk and he had gone dancing every weekend, and took trips together to Florida and the Jersey Shore. Mrs. Boryk loved spending time with her grandchildren -- Bernard Petosa Jr. and Jo-Ann Petosa-Perpignan. Born to Hungarian immigrants in Rossville, he attended Tottenville High School until the depths of the Great Depression in 1932, when he was needed to help his parents support a family of nine. From that point on, his education was self-acquired. Mr. Adams' love for cars and desire to learn caused him to quickly advance, and he became one of the most respected auto mechanics at Kiefer's Auto, a former Tottenville garage, and at Island Chevrolet in New Dorp, where he worked for many years. He was also a supervisor at the former SS White Dental Manufacturing Co. factory in Prince's Bay. Before enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. Adams worked on battleships in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. After the war, he continued to work for the Army as a civilian employee at Miller Field in New Dorp. A mechanic, Mr. Adams was selected for training at the U.S. Army Rocket & Missile School in Huntsville, Ala., and was assigned to missile locations at Camp Kilmer, Fort Dix and Fort Hancock, all in New Jersey, until he retired in 1971 after a 25-year career with the Army. Mr. Adams then began a new career as an electrician, repairing subway cars for the city subway system, and worked for the next 10 years on assignments at railyards in Pelham Bay and Coney Island. A member of the Disabled War Veterans, Mr. Adams also belonged to the Hungarian-American Association of Perth Amboy, N.J. He lived in Tottenville for a few years before settling in Westerleigh in 1951. People were his life, his family said. Described by his son-in-law, George Dougherty, as the "mayor of Westerleigh," Mr. Adams enjoyed joking and talking with people everywhere he went, and was always eager to lend a hand. He prayed daily for a long list of people, and above all, he loved and lived for his family. Mr. Adams also took great pride in caring for his yard, and enjoyed rose gardening. He was a parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners. Surviving Mr. Adams are his wife of 57 years, the former Muriel Ziegler, and his two daughters, Patricia Rosenthal and Susan Dougherty. The funeral will be Monday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Teresa's Church. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
