ANN CAPOBIANCO, 85 Loved ballroom dancing, dining out with daughter Saturday, November 05, 2005 Ann Capobianco, 85, the South Beach grandmother who was struck and killed Wednesday by an SUV near a bustling New Dorp intersection, will be memorialized Monday. Born Ann Corcoran in Brooklyn, she graduated from the former Girls Commercial High School in that borough. She settled in South Beach in 1976. Mrs. Capobianco worked for several Manhattan law firms, spending the final 20 years doing administrative work for the Singer law firm on the Upper East Side. She retired in 1987. Mrs. Capobianco enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City, where she played the slot machines, and dining with her daughter, Margaret Darcy, several times a week at Nucci's restaurant in West Brighton. Over the last five years, she enjoyed going dancing with friends -- she was a ballroom dancer. Mrs. Capobianco also loved to work crossword puzzles. "She said it was good for her mind," said Mrs. Darcy. "My mother also loved to doll up, wear high heels and dress to the nines, every day, until the day she died. The whole neighborhood talked about her." The family joked that Mrs. Capobianco was born to shop. "When the mall opened in the morning, I used to drop her and her granddaughter Veronica off, and then I would pick them up as it was closing," said Mrs. Darcy. Mrs. Capobianco was running errands with her daughter when she was clipped in the head by the side-view mirror of a passing 2006 Chevy Trailblazer on New Dorp Lane and knocked to the pavement. She either had leaned or stepped out from behind a parked car. The driver was not issued a summons. In addition to her daughter, Margaret, and granddaughter, surviving are her three sons, Robert and William Wagner and Anthony Siclari; 10 more grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Mr. Castro's career spanned from 1947 until he retired in 1992. Beginning in 1968, he became a structural project manager -- in charge of numerous bridge and highway design projects involving work on the Delaware Memorial Twin Span Bridges, Delaware Turnpike and the Connecticut Turnpike. Mr. Castro also managed the rehabilitation or replacement of 42 bridges in Connecticut and supervised the inspection of 490 bridges in New York City, including the Brooklyn Bridge. For 13 years, he was chief of specifications for the firm. While in this position, he wrote more than 200 books of contract specifications and reports for bridge and highway projects. His family said that Mr. Castro also wrote several documents regarding bridge expansion joints and roadway lighting for national agencies, which were published and adopted as standards in the industry. In 1964, he received a national merit award from the Construction Specifications Institute for writing the "Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction" for the Delaware River & Bay Authority, his family said. Previously, Mr. Castro served as a structural bridge designer. He designed more than 50 bridges and portions of the first Delaware Memorial Bridge and the Newark Bay Bridge arch span. Mr. Castro held membership in several technical societies, including the National Society of Professional Engineers; American Society of Civil Engineers; International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association; Transportation Research Board; Illuminating Engineering Society; Steel Structures Painting Council, and American Society for Testing and Materials. He was also vice president of Turnaround Friends Inc., a not-for-profit organization where he provided engineering guidance and participated in the development of Seaside Nature Park in Great Kills. A member of Toastmasters International, Mr. Castro rose to the position of area governor of New York City. "He was a man of many talents and seemingly boundless energy. His love and devotion to family, church and community were inspirational. He was generous with his time and expertise, and his enthusiasm was contagious," said his daughter, Linda Matarazzo. Mr. Castro was born in Arrochar and moved to Oakwood in 1954. He was a graduate of St. Peter's Boys High School, New Brighton, and held a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College, the Bronx, where he was admitted into the national engineering honor societies of Chi Epsilon and Epsilon Sigma Chi.
