RALPH ABILDNES, 75 Retired carpenter; Korean War veteran Sunday, November 06, 2005 Ralph Ole Abildnes, 75, of Westerleigh, a lifelong Staten Islander and retired carpenter, died yesterday at home. He was born in Port Richmond and then lived in Westerleigh for the rest of his life. A member of the United Circa 2002 Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Local 20, Mr. Abildnes worked as a carpenter for 50 years. He also worked as a plumber at Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville, from 1980 until his retirement in 1990. He graduated from McKee High School. Mr. Abildnes served as a private first class in the Army during the Korean War. An avid traveler, he enjoyed taking trips across the United States, especially to Arizona and Las Vegas. He also liked fishing and gardening. Mr. Abildnes was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Willowbrook. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Joyce E. Olsen; his daughter, Janice Fanuzzi; a granddaughter; his son, Ralph Jr., and a sister, Ethel Mulligan. PASQUALINA MARROCCO, 96 Retired seamstress was born in Italy Sunday, November 06, 2005 Pasqualina Marrocco, 96, of Annadale, a retired seamstress, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born in Lenola, Italy, the former Pasqualina Rosato moved to New Brighton in 1954 and lived in Concord before settling in Annadale in 1985. Mrs. Marrocco was a former employer of the Glenlock Manufacturing Co. in Stapleton, having worked there for 20 years before retiring in 1980. "She loved to crochet and cook for her family," said her daughter-in-law Diane Marrocco. Celesto, her husband of 58 years, died in 1985. She is survived by two sons, Fred and Ralph Marrocco; a daughter, Guiseppina DeParolis; a brother, Vincent Rosato; a sister, Frances Vitale, 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two other sons, Luigi and Michael Marrocco. Boylan, 69, of Whiting, N.J., a retired cardiac technician, died yesterday in the Silver Lake Specialized 2001 Care Center, Brighton Heights. Born Loretta M. Callan in Manhattan, she moved to New Brighton in 1963 and to Silver Lake in 1988. Mrs. Boylan moved to Whiting in 2000. From 1965 until retiring in 1998, Mrs. Boylan was a cardiac technician at Bayley Seton Hospital, Clifton. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Mrs. Boylan was a parishioner of St. Peter's R.C. Church, New Brighton. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Thomas J.; her son, Thomas J. Jr.; her two daughters, Catherine Crowe and Debra Boylan; two brothers, John and Joseph Callan, and three grandchildren. PISCOPO, 87 Retired Procter & Gamble employee Sunday, November 06, 2005 Julia S. Piscopo, 87, of Willowbrook, a lifelong Staten Islander and retired Procter & Gamble employee, died yesterday at home. Born Julia S. Susdak in Travis, she moved to Mariners Harbor following her wedding, and resided there for Circa 1970 about 10 years. She settled in Willowbrook more than 45 years ago. Mrs. Piscopo, who attended Port Richmond High School, packed bars of Ivory Soap at the former Procter & Gamble plant in the Port Ivory section of Mariners Harbor. Her family said she was very proud of her 26 years of work there. She retired in 1979. She liked to travel, and especially looked forward to frequent trips to Atlantic City. She was also an avid reader who enjoyed novels. Mrs. Piscopo was a parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh. "She was the centerpiece of our family," said her daughter, Colette Curry. In addition to her daughter, Colette, surviving are her husband of 62 years, Peter J.; her son, James L.; two brothers, Raymond and Joseph Melnik; a sister, Stella Horai, and five grandsons. JUDITH CARBONE, 58 Retired secretary was family-oriented Sunday, November 06, 2005 Longtime Staten Islander Judith Carbone, 58, formerly of Rosebank, a retired secretary remembered as a kind-hearted, family-oriented woman, died Friday at Community Medical Center in Toms River, N.J., after a battle with cancer. Born Judith Cangro in Rosebank, Ms. Carbone stayed in that community most of her life, moving to Toms River a year ago. A graduate of Curtis High School, Ms. Carbone worked for about a decade as a secretary in Manhattan before retiring. She enjoyed playing bingo, going to Atlantic City, playing rummy 500 with her family and following the New York Jets and Mets. Ms. Carbone attended St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Rosebank. "She was a kind-hearted person, very good to her family, and she was very family-oriented," said her niece, Dawn Cangro. Her brother, Peter Cangro, added, "She will be missed very much." In addition to her brother, surviving are a son, Alex Palazzola; a daughter, Christine O'Connor; and her mother, Antoinette Cangro. JOSEPH FEDELE SR., 85 Retired construction worker was born in Sicily Sunday, November 06, 2005 Joseph Fedele Sr., 85, of Port Richmond, a retired construction worker, died Friday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born in Sicily, Italy, he moved to Mariners Harbor in 2003 1955. He settled in Port Richmond in 1960. Mr. Fedele worked for more than 30 years as a construction worker and belonged to Local 731, the Laborers' International Union of North America. He retired in 1981. Even after retirement, Mr. Fedele was still an active member in the union and this year celebrated his 50th anniversary with Local 731. Mr. Fedele served in the Italian Army during World War II and was a prisoner of war for two years. According to family members, Mr. Fedele enjoyed tending to his garden in the spring and summer. He also enjoyed canning in the winter, making tomato sauce and other preserves. He loved going to his son's summer home in New Jersey, where he would spend time on the beach. He also enjoyed boating and crabbing. "He was a homebody, he beamed when he saw his children and grandchildren," said his daughter-in-law, Maddalena Fedele. "He would do anything for us -- whether we needed a helping hand or needed help fixing our homes. Whatever it was, he was there; he was very attentive. He was a good father, good grandfather and a good husband." Mr. Fedele was a member of St. Roch's R.C. Church, Port Richmond. Surviving is his wife of 61 years, the former Maria Averina Clementucci; five sons, Salvatore, Anthony, Adelindo, Johnny and Joseph, Jr.; a daughter, Vincenza Fedele; 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. BERNARD HEROLD Sunday, November 06, 2005 Bernard Herold, the founder of the prestigious Bernard Herold & Co. brokerage, a firm that has been a member of the New York Stock Exchange for 33 years, died yesterday at Lenox Hill Hospital. He was 84. A resident of Manhattan, Mr. Herold founded the headquarters of his namesake firm in Manhattan in 1972. He opened an office in Grasmere in the 1980s. According to family, Mr. Herold would go to the office everyday and was still working at the time of his death. ARTHUR CAPLAN, 93 Pharmacist owned former Cappy's Pharmacy stores Sunday, November 06, 2005 Arthur Caplan, 93, of Boca Raton, Fla., a longtime Staten Islander and retired pharmacist, died yesterday in Boca Community Hospital, Boca Raton. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Caplan was raised in the Bronx. He moved briefly to St. Circa 1980 George in the 1930s before relocating to West Brighton, where he resided for 30 years. He moved to Silver Lake in 1973, and to Boca Raton last year. Mr. Caplan was a pharmacist, and owner of the former Cappy's Pharmacy stores in both New Brighton and Meiers Corners. He retired 25 years ago and went on to work for five years in the pharmacy at Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. A graduate of Stuyvesant High School, Manhattan, he earned a bachelor of science degree from Fordham University in the Bronx, in 1934. Mr. Caplan was a board member of the Island Swim Club, New Springville. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed reading. His family said he would often read up to 10 books a week. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Caplan was a member of Congregation B'nai Jeshurun, West Brighton, where he was active in the men's club. While living in Boca Raton, he was a member of Beth Shalom. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, the former Gertrude Beres; two sons, Lawrence and Robert; his daughter, Bette Meyerowich; a sister, Judy Sorgen, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The funeral is Tuesday from Menorah Chapels, New Springville, with burial in Baron Hirsch Cemetery, Graniteville. ANTOINETTE FELICE, 74 Was homemaker, lifelong Staten Islander Sunday, November 06, 2005 Antoinette J. Felice, 74, of West Brighton, a homemaker and lifelong Staten Islander, died Friday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton, following a five-year battle with bone cancer. Born Antoinette J. Ferrara in Rosebank, she graduated 2001 from McKee High School. Mrs. Felice had lived in West Brighton since around 1967. She was a member of the West Brighton Senior Center and enjoyed playing bingo at her parish, Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Benedicta R.C. Church, West Brighton, with her sister, Camilla Bauerle. Mrs. Felice also enjoyed taking bus trips to Atlantic City with her friends and watching movies on television. Her family said she liked to cook, especially spaghetti and meatballs, and spend time with her granddaughter, Antoinette Pryor, who was like a daughter to her. "She was the best mom anyone could ever have. She had a heart of gold for everyone. I am so happy to have been by her side the whole time, even till the end," said her daughter, Anna Felice. Mrs. Felice's husband of 26 years, Salvatore, died in 1987. In addition to her sister, Camilla Bauerle, her granddaughter, Antoinette Pryor, and her daughter, Anna Felice, surviving are her daughter, Diane Cipolli; her two sons, Wayne McIntyre and Michael Pryor; two brothers, Vito and John Ferrara; a sister, Marie Menard, nine more grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Scamardella Funeral Home, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's R.C. Church, Mariners Harbor. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton.
