A familiar face in Island acting circles and a stand-out vocal soloist in his church choir, he was born in Mariners Harbor into a family that has been on Staten Island since the 1600s, according to relatives. He moved to Castleton Corners 30 years ago, lived for five years in St. George, then moved to New Brighton in 1989. For more than two decades he worked at the Manor Road Post Office, retiring in 1982. "He liked working at night so he could pursue acting during the day," said his nephew, Alfred Sprague. Mr. Haughwout directed and starred alongside Nell Carter in the play "Dude" at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, West Brighton, in 1973. A frequent performer in off-Broadway productions, Mr. Haughwout was also a chartered member of the Staten Island Civic Theatre, acting in and directing many productions, including "Our Town" and "Look Homeward, Angel." The poetry aficionado also enjoyed visual arts, and spent many hours at the Museum of Modern Art. "He was jolly, educated, respectful and church-going," said his nephew.
