RUTH DEMMON, 89 College librarian killed in accident on Expressway Wednesday, November 09, 2005 Funeral arrangements have been set for Ruth Demmon, the retired college librarian from Randall Manor with a penchant for traveling and the opera, who was killed Saturday in an accident on the West Shore Expressway. She was 89. Always an independent woman, Mrs. Demmon spent the week before she died in Woodside, Calif., visiting her grandson. The night before, she saw "Aida" at the Metropolitan Opera in Manhattan. The next morning, Mrs. Demmon was heading to her daughter's home in Holmdel, N.J., when she apparently missed the off-ramp to the Outerbridge Crossing and continued straight on the West Shore Expressway, making a mistake common to motorists on the short section of road connecting the southern tail of the Expressway to the Korean War Veterans Parkway. Catching her mistake, she made a U-turn and headed back toward the off-ramp, apparently not realizing she was driving in the wrong direction on a one-way road. Her car collided with an oncoming SUV. Mrs. Demmon later died in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. She was born Ruth Botting in Brooklyn and lived in Bay Ridge until she had to leave her home, which was part of the area required by the city for construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Apparently taking the bridge as her cue, she moved to Staten Island in 1959, first living in Westerleigh before settling in Randall Manor in 1962. For the last 10 years, she had spent the winter months in Port Charlotte, Fla. Mrs. Demmon was a librarian at the former Staten Island Community College, now the College of Staten Island, for many years. She retired around her 65th birthday. Described as a smart woman with a great sense of humor, Mrs. Demmon was an animal lover who was happiest in the company of her family and friends. She made frequent trips to visit her grandson in California and her granddaughter in Toronto and spent a lot of time with her daughters in New Jersey. "She was very easy to be with," said her daughter, Letitia Lombardo. "She was a great, loving person; she enjoyed people very much." Despite losing two husbands at a young age, a daughter in a car accident and her son-in-law three years ago, Mrs. Demmon always maintained her sunny disposition, her family said. "She didn't have an easy life, yet she was an upbeat person," Mrs. Lombardo said. Mrs. Demmon remained active and enjoyed a membership at Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Livingston, where she played bridge with her friends every Wednesday for years. Sundays weren't Sundays without the New York Times and its crossword puzzle, which she never found too difficult to solve. She was an avid reader, with a particular fondness for Agatha Christie and Ellery Queen. "She loved her friends, she loved her family and she enjoyed life," Mrs. Lombardo said. Mrs. Demmon's first husband, Phillip Schneider, died in 1947. Her second husband, Charles Demmon, died in 1958. In addition to her daughter, Letitia, surviving are her daughter, Barbara Soffel; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Carla Demmon, died in 1974. The funeral service will be Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. The arrangements include cremation. ROBERT KENNEY, 70 Liked building and collecting model planes and cars Wednesday, November 09, 2005 Robert D. Kenney, 70, a lifelong Tottenville resident and surveyor, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Mr. Kenney spent the past 35 years living in the same Tottenville home in which he was born; it had been passed through his family over the years. A graduate of Tottenville High School, he studied engineering at a trade school in Perth Amboy, N.J. Mr. Kenney worked for 30 years as a surveyor with Local 15D of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Among the projects he worked on was the building of the World Trade Center. According to his family, Mr. Kenney dug the first hole for the foundation of the iconic towers, built in the early 1970s. He also did surveying work at the Visy paper recycling plant in Travis during the mid-1990s. He met his wife-to-be, the former Theresa Avino, at her family's restaurant, the former Avino's in New Dorp. "He came in off the road one day and that was it," Mrs. Kenney said. The couple married 49 years ago on New Year's Day, while Mr. Kenney, then a soldier, was home on leave. They would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this January. Mr. Kenney served with the U.S. Army Signal Corps in Boston from 1955 until 1957. He enjoyed building and collecting model cars and planes, especially World War II planes. With his collection burgeoning, he often sold some of the replicas at the flea markets of Englishtown, N.J. Mr. Kenney looked forward to annual car shows at the College of Staten Island and was a member of a New Jersey car club. He also loved to spend time with his family. Mr. Kenney was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville. In addition to his wife, Theresa, surviving are his son, Robert L.; his two daughters, Lisa and Irma Kenney; two brothers, Peter and Nicholas; four grandchildren, and eight great-grandsons. The funeral will be Saturday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, Tottenville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church. The former Muriel Sniffen attended Curtis High School. A native of Stapleton, she settled in Rosebank 64 years ago. During her marriage of more than 40 years to the late Felix Madrazo, she devoted herself to making a home for her family. Mr. Madrazo died in 1982. In recent years, Mrs. Madrazo was active with the Arrochar Friendship Club along with her close friend, Marie Marteliano. She loved to play bingo there, and at St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Rosebank, where she was a parishioner. Mrs. Madrazo also tried her luck twice a month during trips to Atlantic City that she took with the church and with members of the Sgt. Michael Labetti Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Rosebank. She had to use a walker in her later years, but she loved to be out and surrounded by people, said her daughter-in-law, Rose Madrazo. She was very independent. People couldn't believe how active she was. Mrs. Madrazo is survived by her three sons, Thomas, Richard and Joseph; her daughter, Barbara Madrazo; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere. JOHN FINK, 78 Mail carrier played trumpet in Army Air Force Band Wednesday, November 09, 2005 Native Staten Islander John Raymond Fink Jr., a native Staten Islander, World War II veteran and retired letter carrier, died Saturday in Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners. The 78-year-old had resided in the center for six years. A native of Eltingville, he graduated from Tottenville High School. During World War II, Mr. Fink served in New York state and in Europe with the U.S. Army, playing the trumpet for the U.S. Army Air Force Band. He attained the rank of sergeant. He settled in Herkimer, N.Y., in the early 1950s, following his tour of duty. He married the former Frances Davidson there, and the couple moved to Staten Island in 1961 -- living in various South Shore communities. Mr. Fink began his career as a salesman for Montgomery Ward and the National Cash Register Co. He delivered mail on Staten Island for the U.S. Postal Service -- mostly in Great Kills -- for 34 years. He retired about 10 years ago. More than anything, Mr. Fink enjoyed spending time with his 14 grandchildren. "He always had some of them with him," said his daughter, Wauneata Waller. He also enjoyed bowling, playing softball and golfing with his longtime friend Jerry White. A New York sports fan, he also liked to watch baseball and football on television. And he loved to sing. "He had a great sense of humor and was always fun to be around," said his daughter. "He filled our hearts and homes with song and laughter." In addition to his wife of 53 years, Frances; his daughter, Wauneata, and his 14 grandchildren, surviving Mr. Fink are his four sons, Paul, Timothy, John and William; his daughters, Charlotte Santella and Carol Lucchese, and a sister, Ruth Fink.
