THOMAS DELANEY, 81 World War II veteran was Manhattan letter carrier Sunday, November 13, 2005 Thomas K. Delaney, 81, of Livingston, a retired letter carrier who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, died Friday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton, after a brief illness. Born in Manhattan, he moved to the Bronx in 1950 1977 and to West Brighton in 1962. In 1981, he settled in Livingston. A graduate of Samuel Gompers High School in the Bronx, Mr. Delaney served in the Army during World War II, from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in Germany and Austria during the war, and in Scotland after the conflict ended, before coming home. From 1949 to 1981, Mr. Delaney worked as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Manhattan. In 1981, he took a job as a messenger with Solomon Brothers in Manhattan. He retired in 1991. Mr. Delaney enjoyed reading military history and watching classic movies. He was also a master scale model builder. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, the former Joan King; his two sons, William and Peter, and his two daughters, Nancy Delaney and Carolyn Delaney. The funeral service will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood. ROBERT J. LAURIE, 75 Korean War veteran was an accomplished pianist Sunday, November 13, 2005 Robert J. Laurie, 75, of New Dorp, a retired U.S. Postal Service clerk and veteran of the Korean War, died Friday at his home. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Laurie grew up in Linden, N.J., and returned to Brooklyn during his teen years and graduated from Lafayette High School. He moved to Prince's Bay in 1991, and to New Dorp in 1993. A U.S. Postal Service clerk at the Ryder Street Station in Brooklyn for 20 years, Mr. Laurie retired in 1991. Mr. Laurie was an accomplished piano player and entertained frequently at the Mount Loretto Friendship Club, Pleasant Plains. "He was enjoyed by all, and we will miss him," said his daughter, Diane Calcavecchia. A private first class in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, from 1951 to 1953, Mr. Laurie was stationed in Germany. In addition to his daughter, Diane, surviving are his two sons, Robert S. and John M.; a sister, the Rev. Ellen Comis, and eight grandchildren. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood. JANE MASTRION, 77 Crossword puzzle aficionado loved the written word Sunday, November 13, 2005 Longtime Staten Islander Jane Mastrion, 77, a homemaker, died Friday at her Grasmere home. Born in Brooklyn, the former Jane Byrnes loved to read 1998 and as a youngster was a champion speller -- her family said she won many spelling bees. Mrs. Mastrion moved to Annadale in 1980 and to New Dorp two years later. In 1985, she moved to Rosebank, where she stayed for 20 years before moving to Grasmere several months ago. The homemaker who took great joy in the written word, read mysteries, novels and biographies of Hollywood stars. Also an avid crossword puzzle fan, she was a familiar face on the Island bingo scene up until a few years ago. She loved cats and decorated her home with pictures of her favorite animal. Mrs. Mastrion was dedicated to her family and loved to talk on the phone to her 2-year-old grandson, John Dylan. "She was the greatest mom," said her son, Ron. " She was devoted and always worried about us, making sure everything was okay." Mrs. Mastrion was a parishioner of Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach. Her husband, John J. Mastrion, died in 1997. In addition to her grandson and her son, Ron, surviving are her daughter, Gladys Mastrion; her brother, Edward Byrnes, and three sisters, Catherine Waldron, Mary Moran and Ann Ditta. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. GRACE BARRESI, 85 Loved to dance the Peabody with her husband Sunday, November 13, 2005 Grace Barresi, 85, of Egbertville, a homemaker whose love for children inspired her to help a number of foster care infants over the years, died yesterday in the Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville. Born Grace Buchetta in Manhattan, she moved to Brooklyn in 1950. In the 1970s she moved to New Springville. Due to illness, she entered the nursing home seven years ago. A homemaker, Mrs. Barresi spent her life taking in and caring for children from the foster care system. According to her family, she and her husband had taken in more than a dozen newborn babies who stayed in their care until they were adopted. At one point, the couple became so attached to two of the boys they cared for that they chose to adopt them. "She looked after a lot of foster children, she loved to raise children," said her son, Charles. "When she took them in her natural children were raised and gone out of the house so she had the extra room to take them in." "She loved having babies around the house which is why she took care of so many children," added her daughter-in-law, Jean Barresi. "She was such a wonderful woman for a mother-in-law," said Mrs. Barresi. "You always hear negative things about mother-in-laws, but I loved her so much. I loved every minute of being her daughter-in-law. She was a lovely person and her life revolved around her children." Mrs. Barresi was married for 55 years to her husband, Philip, who died in 1993. According to family, the couple was extremely close and enjoyed spending time together and taking trips to Atlantic City. According to family, before Mrs. Barresi became sick, she and her husband loved to dance -- especially the Peabody. "They were really partners; they were very, very close," said Mrs. Barresi. "Right now, she's dancing the Peabody with him in heaven." In addition to her son, Charles, surviving are four more sons, Philip Jr., Paul, Daniel and Michael; her daughter, Natalie Insalaco; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday from the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Richmond. Burial will be in Carnasie Cemetery, Brooklyn. FRANK SCUDERI, 76 Contractor liked sports Sunday, November 13, 2005 Frank J. Scuderi, 76, a retired home improvement carpenter, died Friday at his South Beach home. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Scuderi settled in South Beach in 1966. He worked as a home improvement carpenter in Manhattan for most of his life. Mr. Scuderi was a former Golden Gloves boxer who enjoyed all sports, especially football and horseracing. "He was a devoted father-figure to his granddaughter, Julie Scuderi, the daughter of my late sister, Roselle Scuderi," said his daughter, Jeanann Scuderi. In addition to his daughter and granddaughter, surviving is his wife of 55 years, the former Marie Volpe. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Martin Hughes Funeral Home, Concord, with a mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary's R.C. Church, Midland Beach.
