KEVIN CLANCY, 57 Self-employed truck driver lived in Great Kills Monday, November 14, 2005 Kevin B. Clancy, of Great Kills, a self-employed truck driver, died yesterday. He was 57. Mr. Clancy was born and raised in Oakwood Heights, where he lived for 30 years before moving to Great Kills. A graduate of New Dorp High School, Mr. Clancy joined the Navy and was stationed on the USS Sierra in Norfolk, Va., for two years. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Mr. Clancy was a self employed truck driver at the time of his death. "He was a great guy," said his sister Kathleen Paulsen, adding her brother was active in the Knights of Columbus. "He loved people and loved life." Mr. Clancy's brother-in-law Bernie Paulsen said he had numerous friends. "He was fun loving and outgoing," said Paulsen. Mr. Clancy was a parishioner of St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood. He is survived by a son, Kevin; a daughter, Jessica Clancy; two sisters, Kathleen Paulsen and Jacqueline McMahon, and his companion, Jackie Molokie. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills with a mass at 10:15 a.m. in St. Charles Church. Cremation will be private. JOSE SANCHEZ, 77 Retired store planner enjoyed drawing Monday, November 14, 2005 Jose Sanchez, 77, of Oakwood, a retired store planner, died yesterday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Born in Puerto Rico, Mr. Sanchez moved to the United States in 1950, living in Manhattan and Brooklyn before settling in Oakwood in 1964. A member of the International Store Planners Association, Mr. Sanchez worked for 40 years as a store planner for JC Penney, helping to design the interiors and layout of the department stores. He retired 10 years ago. He studied drafting at the Pratt Institute, Manhattan, where he earned a technical degree. Mr. Sanchez loved to paint with watercolors and drawing with pastels. He also loved traveling all over the world, including jaunts to South America, Spain and Europe. A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy in Vieques, Puerto Rico. Mr. Sanchez was a parishioner of St. Patrick's R.C. Church, Richmond. His wife of 48 years, the former Maria Rodriguez, died in 1999. Surviving are his two daughters, Annabel Jastremski and Madeleine McGinley, and three grandchildren. Another daughter, Evelyn Maria Sanchez, died in 1964. JOHN MURPHY, 77 Retired dock builder enjoyed boating Monday, November 14, 2005 John J. Murphy, 77, a retired dock builder formerly of South Beach, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born in Boston, Mass., Mr. Murphy moved to St. George in 1967. He settled in South Beach in 1969. He had been a resident of the Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville, since 2000. Mr. Murphy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and later served in the U.S. Army, He was discharged in 1952. He owned a dock building company, North Atlantic Dock Builders, for 14 years. He retired in 1981. Mr. Murphy loved boating and enjoyed being outside in all kinds of weather. He also enjoyed watching football games and spending time with friends, family and his grandchildren. "He was a devoted and caring father," said his daughter, Theresa Moran. While a resident at the nursing home, Mr. Murphy would pass out candy to everyone and became known as the "candy man," she said. "Words cannot express the love and admiration I have for my father. I was blessed to be a part of his life," said his son, Jack Murphy. "My father loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, but now he can be with his wife. She was the love of his life," added his daughter, Jennifer Murphy-Rivera. Mr. Murphy's wife of 33 years, the former Agnes White, died in 2003. In addition to his daughters, Jennifer and Theresa, and his son, Jack, Mr. Murphy is survived by another son, Daniel; two more daughters, Erin Dimino and Ella Moran; and seven grandchildren. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. GERALD LUSTIG, 49 Business owner had keen interest in motorcycles Monday, November 14, 2005 Gerald J. Lustig Jr., 49, of Tottenville, a business owner who enjoyed riding and collecting motorcycles, died Saturday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born in Queens, Mr. Lustig was brought to Ohio as a child and to Todt Hill as a teen-ager. He settled in Tottenville about 25 years ago. Mr. Lustig attended Staten Island Academy and graduated from Susan Wagner High School. Mr. Lustig worked as a respiratory therapist for several years as a young man. He then went on to own several businesses, including American Thunder, a Charleston motorcycle shop. About six years ago, Mr. Lustig opened a business in Carney, N.J., that sold, manufactured and bottled a motorcycle wax product called Pig Snot. An avid Harley Davidson fan, Mr. Lustig owned several motorcycles. He also built motorcycle choppers and enjoyed watching NASCAR racing on television. Mr. Lustig enjoyed spending time with his family and extended family members, especially Anthony and Brienna D'Angelone, whom he treated like his own children. Mr. Lustig is survived by his wife, the former Sharry DeGroff; his stepdaughter, Jennifer Freeman; a sister, Debbie Despense, and one step-granddaughter. The funeral service is today at 2 p.m. in Menorah Chapels, New Springville. A graveside service will follow in the United Hebrew Cemetery, Richmond. FREDERICK HENEL, 58 Taught carpentry at McKee High School Monday, November 14, 2005 Frederick G. Henel, 58, of Great Kills, a lifelong Staten Islander and teacher who dedicated his life to improving the welfare of Staten Island's children, died yesterday in Silver Lake Specialized Care Center, Brighton Heights, after a brief illness. A descendant of the Winants, one of the pioneer Island families, he was born in Annadale, and settled in Great Kills in 1980. From 1970 until 1993, he worked as a childcare counselor and recreation specialist for Outdoor Education, based at the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin at Mount Loretto, Pleasant Plains. There, he targeted the special needs of the changing population of the children at the Mission's former orphanage. He also spent many years working with children at the Mission, teaching carpentry, landscaping and simple home-improvement skills through the New York City Summer Youth Employment Program. For the past 17 years, Mr. Henel was a city high school teacher at several city high schools, including McKee High School, where he taught vocational carpentry. An Eagle Scout, Mr. Henel was a former Scoutmaster of Troop 41 at St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills. His family said he was instrumental in helping young scouts achieve their Eagle Scout rank. He was also a member of the Beacon Light Masonic Lodge. Mr. Henel graduated from Tottenville High School in 1964, and went on to study geology at Waynesburg College, Waynesburg, Penn. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Staten Island. His interest in geology carried over into his involvement with the Staten Island Geological Society. He was also a member of the Staten Island Bicycle Association, and had completed several Five Boro Bike Tours. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Henel especially loved vacationing in the Catskills with family and friends for more than 30 years. He was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church. Surviving are Mr. Henel's wife of 28 years, the former Joan Kehoe; his son, Christian; his daughter, Katherine Henel, and a sister, Leslie Powell. EDWARD O'BEIRNE, 63 Interstate truck driver enjoyed hunting Monday, November 14, 2005 Edward O'Beirne, 63, of Eltingville, an interstate truck driver and avid hunter, died Thursday in The Hospital of Rimouski, Quebec City, Canada, after suffering a heart attack while on a hunting trip. Born in Bayonne, he was raised in St. George. He lived in several other Island communities before settling in Eltingville 18 years ago. A graduate of McKee High School, Mr. O'Beirne worked as an interstate truck driver for Gemini Trucking Co., Edison, N.J., for the past eight years. Mr. O'Beirne's passions in life were his grandson, Stephen Afasano; hunting for deer, bear, turkey and wild boar, and fishing in Martling's Pond in Clove Lakes Park and upstate. He also loved spending time with his many friends. He was a member of the Great Kills Yacht Club; the Sunrise Farm Rod & Gun Club, Hankins, N.Y., and the National Rifle Association. Mr. O'Beirne was a loyal fan of the Dodgers, and took his grandson to many Broadway plays. His grandson said he always looked forward to camping trips upstate with his favorite hunting buddy, Richard Franklin, who died in 2004. They would often go to the Happy Days Campgrounds. Mr. O'Beirne served as a private first class in the Marine Corps from 1960 until 1963, stationed throughout South America and Puerto Rico. His companion of 15 years, Lois Forni, died in 1995. Surviving is his grandson, Stephen. The funeral will be tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville. Arrangements include cremation. ALICE DAMITZ, 89 Retired telephone company operator Monday, November 14, 2005 Alice Damitz, 89, of Port Richmond, a lifelong Staten Islander and former telephone company operator, died yesterday in Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home, where she had been a resident since April. Born Alice Waszak in New Brighton, she spent 59 years living in West Brighton before relocating to Port Richmond three years ago. A graduate of Curtis High School, Mrs. Damitz worked for a short time for the New York Telephone Co., West Brighton. She was a member of the New York Telephone Pioneers. Mrs. Damitz was a parishioner at Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton, where she was a member of its senior citizens group. She was also a member of the Castleton Corners AARP chapter, the Elm Park Seniors and the St. Rita's Seniors. Her husband of 48 years, John C., died in 1984. Surviving are two sons, John and Gerald; a daughter, Alice Ellera; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.
