RAYMOND BURTON, 75 Longtime funeral director for Savannah Chapels Tuesday, November 15, 2005 By HAFSA AMIN ADVANCE STAFF WRITER Longtime Staten Islander, Raymond P. Burton, the former director of Savannah Chapels, Elm Park, for more than three decades, died Nov. 10 at his Elm Park home. He was 75. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Burton served as a corporal in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He moved to Elm Park in 1969. For more than 25 years, Mr. Burton was a mortician for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, in Brooklyn and the Bronx. He retired in the 1980s. In 1969, Mr. Burton opened the Savannah Chapels in Elm Park, where he worked as a funeral director for 36 years. Mr. Burton attended Lincoln University, Philadelphia, and was a mortuary school graduate. He was a member of the Prince Hall Masons in Manhattan; the Silver Queen Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, the Staten Island Chapter, NAACP and the Metropolitan Funeral Directors Association. Mr. Burton enjoyed photography. He also collected electronic equipment, which he worked with. He attended Walker Memorial Baptist Church in the Bronx during his childhood, and Fellowship Baptist Church in Mariners Harbor. Surviving are his wife of 36 years, the former Helen Carter; his three daughters, Cynthia Burton, Doreena and Edwina Dargins; a brother, Edward Woods, and two grandsons. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Savannah Chapels with a service at 7 p.m. in Walker Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale. JOSE FERRER, 68 Minister enjoyed cooking Tuesday, November 15, 2005 Jose Antonio Ferrer, 68, a former minister, died Saturday as his home in West Brighton. Born in Orocovis, Puerto Rico, Mr. Ferrer moved to the Bronx in 1954. In 1973, he moved to Staten Island, living in St. George, Stapleton and the Park Hill section of Clifton before settling in West Brighton three years ago. Mr. Ferrer was a minister and would preach wherever he was invited. His passion in life was cooking, especially Puerto Rican specialty dishes. He also loved helping other people and spending time with his grandchildren. My father didn't have the best but he always gave us the best he could, said his daughter, Madeline Diaz. Mr. Ferrer's former wife, Juana Flores, died in 1998. In addition to his daughter, Madeline, surviving are two other daughters, Maria Rivera and Dorcas Ferrer; two sons, Jose Jr. and Elias Cruz; 12 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Stradford Funeral Home with a service at 8 p.m. in Mount Sinai United Christian Church, both in Tompkinsville. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Meiers Corners. CATHERINE MEIER, 45 Business and legal secretary Tuesday, November 15, 2005 Former New Springville resident Catherine Mary Meier died Sunday at Morton Plant Hospital, Clearwater, Fla., after a long illness. She was 45. Born in Queens, Miss Meier lived there for 19 years before moving to New Springville. She moved to Tampa, Fla., in 1990. After graduating from Richmond Hill High School in Queens, she worked in the insurance business and as a legal secretary before being hired as a secretary for what was then Dean Witter Reynolds in Manhattan while she lived in New York. Miss Meier's mother said her daughter was known and loved by many. "She was the kind of person who attracted people," said her mother, Marion Meier. "She was warm, outgoing and vocal." While she was hospitalized, Mrs. Meier decorated her window with hundreds of e-mails, letters and cards wishing her well from various people she met across the country. "She wrote to hundreds of people and they wrote to her," said her mother. In addition to her mother, Miss Meier is survived by a brother, Michael, and a sister, Lucille Sanchez. The funeral will be Thursday from the Loyless Funeral Home with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary R.C. Church, both Land O'Lakes, Fla. Burial will be Dec. 12 with a 10 a.m. graveside service in St. John's Cemetery, Queens. GILDA IEMOLO, 67 Home cook had penchant for Italian specialties Tuesday, November 15, 2005 Gilda Iemolo, 67, of South Beach, a homemaker, died Sunday at home. Born Gilda Tapchino in Manhattan, Mrs. Iemolo moved to South Beach in the 1950s. A homemaker, Mrs. Iemolo was a member of Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach. According to family, she was an active member of the church's senior center, which is across the street from her home. There, she met her friends for breakfast and lunch and every day would play cards and bingo and take classes in Tae Bo. Mrs. Iemolo also had a vegetable garden in her backyard that she loved to tend. A good cook, she specialized in creating Italian dishes for her family. Her spaghetti sauce with meatballs and sausage -- forget it. It was great. The salad had garden-grown lettuce, tomatoes and scallion, really good, said her son, Salvatore. Mrs. Iemolo also loved to spend time on the South Beach boardwalk. She was a very warm and caring individual. She was always very family-oriented, added her son. Her husband of 51 years, Joseph, died in 2004. Along with her son, Salvatore, also surviving are a daughter, Joanne Iemolo, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday from the A. Azzara Funeral Home, South Beach, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere. BEATRICE LOMANGINO, 85 Dental nurse spent winters in Florida Tuesday, November 15, 2005 Beatrice P. Lomangino, 85, of New Dorp, a retired nurse, died Sunday at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, after a two-month stay. Born Beatrice Peterson in Bulls Head, she graduated from Port Richmond High School and studied nursing in Pitsfield, Mass. Mrs. Lomangino worked for more than two decades as a dental nurse in the Port Richmond practices of Drs. Aberlin and Edelman, retiring in 1968. She moved to Graniteville in 1940 and in the early 1950s, relocated to New Dorp. For the past 20 years, she and her husband of 42 years, Louis, would winter in Cape Coral, Fla. She loved everybody, said Mr. Lomangino. She had a good heart. Mrs. Lomangino and her sisters founded the now-closed Atonement Lutheran Church in Oakwood, where she played piano, sang and conducted the choir. The funeral is Thursday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a service at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Allan H. Fjordbotten of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Dongan Hills, will officiate. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. ALFRED ROBERTS, 83 Longtime journalist was patron of the arts Tuesday, November 15, 2005 Alfred B. Roberts, 83, of Livingston, N.J., a native Staten Islander and retired journalist, died Sunday in St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston. Born and reared in Port Richmond, Mr. Roberts graduated from Port Richmond High School. He went on to study journalism at Wagner College, Grymes Hill, and was a member of the Wagner College Alumni Association. After his marriage in 1953, he settled in Livingston. Mr. Roberts' long career in newspapers began when he covered sports for the Advance. He continued as a sports reporter with the paper after his graduation from college. He then went to work as copy desk chief and editor at The Star Ledger of Newark. He also worked as a copy editor at the New York Journal American, the World-Telegram and the Daily News. He retired in 1991 after 31 years as an assistant editor at The New York Times, where his family said he was instrumental in the creation of that paper's Living sections. Mr. Roberts didn't just write about sports. He was also an avid baseball fan with a special affection for the New York Mets. He also was a coach for the Livingston Intermediate Little League in the 1970s. He was also a daily fixture at Seymour's Luncheonette. Mr. Roberts was described by his family as a patron of charities and the arts. He enjoyed a close bond with his niece and nephew, Jo and Rick Surpin. They were like his second set of children, said his daughter, Anita Roberts Patten. A World War II veteran, he served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, stationed in the South Pacific. Mr. Roberts' wife of 43 years, the former Rosemary McCoole, died in 1996. In addition to his daughter, Anita, surviving are a brother, Lionel Roberts, and a sister, Sylvia Surpin. The funeral will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the Bernheim Apter Kreitzman Suburban Funeral Chapel, Livingston. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hanover, N.J.
