AMANDA CURTIS, 73 Home-care attendant was family beautician, quilter Friday, November 18, 2005 By ROB HART ADVANCE STAFF WRITER Castleton Corners resident Amanda B. Curtis, a skilled beautician and retired home-care attendant, died Tuesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton, after years of steadfast religious dedication, both in the United States and in her home country of Liberia. She was 73. Born Amanda Bracewell in the settlement of Arthington in Liberia, she was affectionately known throughout her life by a variety of nicknames, including Biepe, Aunty Biepe and Sister AB. In a family of missionaries who established the Suehn Mission ministry, she developed a strong sense of religion, waking before dawn to make her personal devotions, and then gathering all in her home to pray before they began their round of activities. Mrs. Curtis was a member of Burns-Phelps United Methodist Church in Brewerville, Liberia, where she sang in and led the choir. Her family said she was instrumental in supporting the growth of the Christian Education ministry, serving as superintendent of the Sunday school. It was not unusual for Mrs. Curtis to entertain church members in her home, and when the St. Paul River District Sunday School Convention of the United Methodist Church was held in Brewerville, she cooked nonstop -- preparing large meals for hundreds of people during the five-day event. In 1954, she married Alfred B. Curtis Sr. and moved to Brewerville, where her husband was the mayor. There, she converted a section of their home into a school, in response to a need for educational facilities in the city. In 1964, she accompanied her husband to California, Ohio and Philadelphia, while he was on a study tour. She took the chance to commit to some studies of her own, earning a certification from a beauty school in California. While she never opened a formal business, she was the resident beautician for friends and family. But that wasn't her only skill -- Mrs. Curtis learned quilting at an early age and enjoyed it throughout her life. The first person to see her begin a new project could claim ownership over the finished product, leading her children either to ask for the next start date or put in reservations well in advance. One of Mrs. Curtis' quilt specialties was the Wedding Ring, a pattern with intertwining wedding rings with no beginning and no end, symbolizing the lasting commitment of marriage. She was also adept at crocheting, knitting and needlepoint embroidery, sewing original dresses for her daughters, and using her sewing machine to mend clothes for her grandchildren. Mrs. Curtis returned to Liberia in the late 1960s, but moved to Concord in 1978 to help care for her first grandchild. As more grandchildren were born, she opened her home to them -- relieving her children of the stress of going to school or work with no one to watch the kids. Her caring nature blossomed into a career as a home-care attendant. She took a nursing assistant course at Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home, from which she retired in 1995. She became an active member of Christ United Methodist Church, Graniteville. In 1997, she settled in the Todt Hill Houses in Castleton Corners. In addition to her husband of more than 50 years, Alfred, surviving are her six sons, Dr. Alfred B. Jr., Ralph, George V., Lafayette, Edwin V. and Tony C.; her five daughters, Brenda Curtis-Browne, Amelia Musu Curtis, Verlene Curtis, Jacqueline Curtis and Tussie Amanda Curtis; a brother, Husher Bracewell; five sisters, Louise Mason, Anna Tubman, Mildred Bracewell, Ida Whisnant and Maryann Bracewell; 32 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two of her children who died in childbirth -- they were nicknamed Lollipop and Baby C. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Stradford Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with a service at 9:30 a.m. in Christian Pentecostal Church, Concord. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
