SISTER ALICE MARIE O'CONNOR, 85 Saturday, November 19, 2005 Sister Alice Marie O'Connor, 85, a member the Order of Preachers of the Dominican Convent, Sparkill, N.Y., died yesterday in Siena Hall 1980 Infirmary in the Dominican Convent. Born Alice O'Connor in West Brighton, she was theeighth of nine children born to the late John P. and Alice O'Callaghan O'Connor. She graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1938. On Sept. 2 of that year, she entered the Dominican Congregation of Our Lady of the Rosary and became known as Sister Alice Marie, professing her first vows in 1940 and final vows in 1945. Sister Alice Marie earned a bachelor's degree in education from Manhattan College, the Bronx, in 1948 and a master's degree in mathematics from St. John's University, Queens, in 1952. During her professional life, Sister Alice Marie taught elementary and high school throughout the Archdiocese of New York. She taught at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Queens, from 1940 to 1942; St. Mary's School in upstate Fulton from 1942 to 1944; St. Rita's School in Meiers Corners, 1944 to 1945; St. Brendan's School in the Bronx, 1945 to 1950; Aquinas High School in the Bronx, 1950 to 1955; Cathedral High School in Manhattan, 1955 to 1967, and Monsignor Scanlan High School in the Bronx, 1967 to 1975. Sister Alice Marie also was a director of religious education at Holy Innocents Parish in Pleasantville, Westchester County, from 1972 to 1982, and at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Scarsdale, also Westchester County, from 1982 to 1990. Here on the Island, she served on the board of directors of Eden II from 1975 to 1983 and at On Your Mark from 1980 to 1993. Upon retiring from teaching in the mid-1980s, Sister Marie Alice offered local community service in the Dominican Convent. Surviving is her sister, Catherine McGowan. The funeral mass will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel, Dominican Convent. Burial will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Sparkill. ROSALIE GONZALEZ, 67 Volunteered at senior center and elementary school Saturday, November 19, 2005 Former Staten Islander Rosalie Gonzalez of Naples, Fla., a retired bank vice president, died Nov. 10 in Naples Community Hospital, of complications of a heart attack. She was 67. Born Rosalie Legrano in Manhattan, she was brought to New Dorp as a child and graduated from St. Peter's Girls High School in New Brighton. She moved to Oakwood in 1961, living there until she relocated to Naples in 1999. Mrs. Gonzalez was a vice president of operations for JPMorgan Chase in Manhattan for 24 years. She retired in 1999. While living in Naples, she volunteered with the Manor Care Senior Center and read storybooks to children at the Calusa Park Elementary School. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. An avid reader, Mrs. Gonzalez also enjoyed playing cards, listening to music and going to the theater and concerts. Mrs. Gonzalez was a parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle R.C. Church, Naples. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Jaime; her two sons, James and Stephen; her daughter, Janine Dalconzo; a brother, Joseph Legrano, and 11 grandchildren. PETER HUGHES, 62 Dock builder enjoyed golfing and studying history Saturday, November 19, 2005 South Beach resident Peter Hughes, 62, a retired dock builder and Civil War history buff, died of cancer Thursday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born in Brooklyn, he spent most of his life moving 1963 around the New York City area after graduation from Malverne (L.I.) High School. He settled in South Beach 20 years ago. For 11 years, Mr. Hughes worked as a dock builder with Local 1456 of the Dock Builders Union. He retired in 1996. Coming from a long line of Marines, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1963. He was discharged as a corporal in 1967. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Marine Corps League, Staten Island Detachment. He enjoyed playing golf and studying history, with a special interest in the Civil War. Mr. Hughes is survived by his two sons, Sean Hughes and Edward Armstrong; two brothers, Merril and Carey Hughes, and a sister, Patricia Hughes. His daughter, Holly Ann Hughes, disappeared at the age of 7 in 1981 from Port Richmond. The funeral service will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
