WILLIAM ARCHER JR., 63 Founded an import-export firm in Thailand Friday, November 25, 2005 Longtime Staten Islander William (Gene) E. Archer Jr., 63, of West Brighton, a businessman who had a passion for his work, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, after a short illness. After the Westerleigh native graduated from Port Richmond High School at the age of 18, he became a general sales manager for the former William S. Archer Inc., Port Richmond -- a family-owned automotive parts business founded in the 1920s by his grandfather. Mr. Archer dedicated 23 years to the company, where he directed all sales personnel and financial officers. From 1965 to 1988, he played an important role in supplying automotive, industrial and marine supplies to many businesses on Staten Island, in the other four boroughs and as far away as Louisiana. He and the former Ellen Johansen were married in 1964. In 1969, the couple moved to Castleton Corners, and the home he lived in for 30 years saw the birth of two of his sons, William Archer III and John Louis Archer. In 1988, the boom in energy conservation led Mr. Archer to start his own business venture. As president of Shore Energy Inc. in Mariners Harbor, he saw the company complete many large energy conservation projects for several businesses on the Island and in the tri-state area. He sold the company in 1995. After enjoying a vacation in Bangkok, Thailand, several years ago, Mr. Archer decided to relocate there in order to start a chain of import-export businesses. While in Thailand, he also was a sales contractor for Motorola, promoting and introducing new products to many commercial and industrial settings in Thailand and surrounding Asian countries. Mr. Archer met his second wife, the former Rapheephan Songukae, while in Thailand. The couple were married in 2001. They moved to Westerleigh later that year and Mr. Archer returned to work for the family automotive parts business as a general credit and sales manager. After a total of 40 years with the company, he retired in June. In addition to his sons, William III and John, and his wife, Rapheephan, surviving are his son, Michael; his parents, Elizabeth Ann and William E. Archer, Sr., two brothers, Gary and Donald; four grandchildren, and his former wife, Ellen. The funeral service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Castleton Corners. SYLVIA CAMPOREALLE, 76 Knitted hats for cancer patients, adored grandkids Friday, November 25, 2005 Sylvia Camporealle, 76, of Annadale, a homemaker and health care worker, died Monday at her home. Born Sylvia Abbondante in Brooklyn, she settled in Annadale in 1983. Mrs. Camporealle worked for several years as a bookbinder for a former publishing company in Brooklyn, until she left the job to rear her family. She returned to the workforce in the 1970s -- employed for a couple of years at Holy Family Home, a health-care center in Brooklyn, before retiring in 1980. A member of the Howell (N.J.) Senior Citizen Center, Mrs. Camporealle loved knitting hats and sending them to Holy Family Home, to be given to cancer patients. According to her family, she enjoyed spending summer vacations at her home in New Jersey and winters at her home in Florida. "But her heart was in Staten Island, she loved Staten Island," said her son, Paul. Mrs. Camporealle loved going to her granddaughter's singing engagements and watching her grandson during baseball games. She also thoroughly enjoyed watching her grandson give a live weather report with Mr. G on a New York station. Her granddaughter also gave her reason to celebrate. "One of her biggest thrills was seeing her granddaughter perform during 'Showtime at the Apollo,'" said her son. "She lived for her grandchildren." Mrs. Camporealle was a former parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine R.C. Church in Howell, and attended Holy Child R.C. Church, Eltingville. Because her son is a police officer and her son-in-law is a firefighter, Mrs. Camporealle was always a big fan of the NYPD and FDNY. "She was a happy person who loved life. She loved her religion. She loved Jesus Christ. She was a family-orientated person. She loved getting together with family," said her son, Paul. Mrs. Camporealle is also survived by her husband of 46 years, Alfonso; her daughter, Debra Franzese-Castellano; three sisters, Margie Clemente, Ann Fazio and Dorothy Priolo, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in Holy Child Church. Burial will be in Daytona Memorial Park, Daytona Beach, Fla. SALVATORE CAMPANELLI, 60 English teacher played the guitar in music ministry Friday, November 25, 2005 Salvatore Campanelli, 60, of Great Kills, a teacher and devout Catholic, died yesterday in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Manhattan. Born in Manhattan, he was reared in the Bronx, and settled in Great Kills 32 years ago. Mr. Campanelli graduated from Morris High School in the Bronx before earning bachelor's and master's degrees in education at City College, Manhattan. He taught for several years at Kieran Intermediate School in the Bronx, then spent more than 25 years teaching English at Morris Intermediate School, Brighton Heights. Mr. Campanelli also worked for 15 years at the former Rabbi Jacob Joseph School for Boys in Richmond. He retired in 2001. An active parishioner of St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills, Mr. Campanelli was a representative to the Staten Island Respect Life Vicariate. He also counted the money collected after masses and was a Eucharistic adorer and former Eucharistic minister. Mr. Campanelli also expressed his religious devotion through music. Though he was not a member of the church choir, his beautiful singing voice inspired other parishioners at mass, his family said. He also played guitar for the music ministry of the former Our Mother of Consolation Prayer Group in Pleasant Plains, and offered guitar lessons. He was a third-degree Knight with the Staten Island Council, Knights of Columbus. Mr. Campanelli loved sports, and rooted for the former Brooklyn Dodgers before switching his allegiance to the New York Mets. He enjoyed fishing in the waters off Staten Island, especially trips with his son and grandsons to Great Kills Park and Conference House Park in Tottenville. "He was a wonderful, devoted husband, father and grandfather, and a wonderful friend," said his wife, the former Cynthia Karavas. "He was a very caring, loving person who would have done anything for anyone. His whole life he was giving of himself." In addition to his wife, Cynthia, surviving Mr. Campanelli are his son, Anthony; his two daughters, Theresa O'Gorman and Tina Campanelli, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in St. Clare's Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. REGINA HENAR, 78 Board of Education worker crocheted baby blankets Friday, November 25, 2005 Regina Henar of Annadale, a retired paraprofessional for the former city Board of Education, died Tuesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. A physical fitness enthusiast, Mrs. Haffner played golf and tennis with her husband until she turned 90. Mrs. Haffner's cousin, Monsignor Peter Finn of St. Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, N.Y., said her physical activity, coupled with simple living, contributed to her long, full life. "She was a very intelligent and active person," he said. "She was a deeply religious woman, involved and concerned with her family, church and community." Born Mary Powers in Brooklyn, she moved to Queens after marrying Edward Haffner in 1947. She entered Carmel Richmond in 1995.
