MARY CAFARO, 90 Headed Manhattan carting company Sunday, November 27, 2005 By ANDREA BOYARSKY ADVANCE STAFF WRITER Mary Cafaro of Todt Hill, a former carting company president who supported higher education within her family, died Thursday in Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn. She was 90. Born Mary Montemurro in Hoboken, N.J., she moved to Brooklyn after marrying the late Joseph Cafaro in 1933. The couple settled in Todt Hill in 1982. For many years until 1998, Mrs. Cafaro was the president of the former J. Cafaro Carting Co. in Manhattan. A family business since 1901, the company was owned by her husband and late son, Anthony. Mrs. Cafaro loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Described as a true believer in education, she was proud to say that two of her four grandchildren earned master's degrees in education, one is a Wall Street money trader and another is a dentist. Mrs. Cafaro believed in education so much that she set up college funds for her five great-grandchildren, who range in age from 3 to 12, according to family. "She was definitely one of a kind and will always be remembered for her generosity and love of life," said her daughter, Mary Ann Lattinelli. A non-stop blanket maker, Mrs. Cafaro enjoyed knitting and crocheting blankets for all newborns -- even if they weren't a part of her family. She also enjoyed taking trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City. In addition, her son-in-law, Carlo Lattinelli, would buy Lotto tickets for her to play every day. Dubbed Mrs. Christmas by her family, Mrs. Cafaro loved the holiday and would host gatherings at her house every year. She was known for her collection of Santa Claus memorabilia and her Italian cooking. Even when it wasn't Christmas of a holiday, Mrs. Cafaro's grandchildren would visit her daily for "takeout." "She showed tremendous inner strength and would not let anything or anyone stand in the way of her and her family's progress," Mrs. Lattinelli said. Although her life wasn't always easy, her family said she lived every minute of it with no regrets. She was a parishioner of Regina Pacis R.C. Church, Brooklyn, and St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, Travis. Mrs. Cafaro's husband of 64 years, Joseph, died in 1997. Her son, Anthony, died in 1994.
