STELLA STASIAK, 81, Native of Poland was a homemaker Monday, November 28, 2005 Longtime Westerleigh resident Stella Stasiak, 81, a native of Poland, died Thursday in Compassionate Care Hospice, Dover, N.J. Born Stella Vwolska in Koprzywnica, Poland, she moved to Westerleigh in 1963 with her husband, Stanley. She relocated to Long Valley, N.J., several months ago. Mrs. Stasiak was a homemaker who enjoyed growing tomatoes, vegetables and flowers in her garden. "She meant a lot to her nieces and their families," said Janet Gormley, one of her three nieces. Mrs. Stasiak was a parishioner of St. Adalbert's R.C. Church, Elm Park. She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Stanley. The funeral was scheduled for this morning from the William J. Leber Funeral Home, Chester, N.J., with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Adalbert's Church. Burial was to follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. SANDRA SILBERSTEIN, 56 Retired airport security officer Monday, November 28, 2005 Sandra Silberstein, 56, of Willowbrook, an airport security officer, died yesterday at home. Born Sandra Trapas in Manhattan, she was brought to South Ozone Park, Queens, as a child and graduated from John Adams High School. She settled in Willowbrook in 1984. Since 2004, until becoming ill, Mrs. Silberstein was a screener at Newark (N.J.) International Airport. For two years prior, she was a cashier at Doody's Home Center, Castleton Corners. She enjoyed bowling and was an officer in her league. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, including her granddaughter, Cailey Byrum, and taking trips to Atlantic City. Mrs. Silberstein loved to cook, her family said, adding that her meatballs and chicken cutlets tasted great. Wherever she worked, they said, she would bake birthday cakes for her co-workers, as well as bring cookies and brownies. "Everyone loved her. She was a very special person and had a big heart," said Mrs. Silberstein's husband, Sam. He added that he used to call her his "Sandy Claus" because she was like one of Santa's helpers, always buying gifts for people. Mrs. Silberstein was a parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh. In addition to her husband, Sam, and her granddaughter, surviving are her three sons, Jason, Matthew and Joseph; her daughter, Lisa Byrum; her mother, Ida (Eva) Trapas, and a brother, Tom Trapas. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in Holy Family Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. ROCCO ZACCHI, 81 WW II veteran was a retired SIRT train master Monday, November 28, 2005 Rocco S. Zacchi, 81, of Deptford, N.J., a former Staten Islander and a retired train master, died Nov. 18 at home. Born in Auburn, N.Y., he was brought to South Beach as an infant. Mr. Zacchi also lived in Oakwood and Westerleigh before settling in Deptford 20 years ago. A graduate of Port Richmond High School, he worked as a train master for the former Staten Island Rapid Transit for 43 years, until retiring 19 years ago. Mr. Zacchi was a fourth-degree Knight of the Assumption Council, Knights of Columbus. He loved people, especially children. He was an active supporter of several charities. Mr. Zacchi enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles. He also loved his five Shih-Tzus. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. Mr. Zacchi was a parishioner of Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, the former Evelyn Peterson; his daughter, Judy Zacchi-Petralia; a brother, Valentino; a sister, Jean Cirignano, and four granddaughters. Mr. Zacchi's son, Steven, died in 2004. A memorial mass is scheduled for Dec. 9 at 1 p.m. in Holy Rosary Church. Isola, 79, of Grant City, a mother of two children who prided herself on raising her family, died Saturday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born Louise J. Poggi in Manhattan, she also lived in Queens for 30 years before settling in Grant City with her sister, Catherine Molinelli, in 1978. Mrs. Isola was a homemaker whose life revolved around her family. She was a member of the AARP and the Socialites of St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood, where she was a parishioner. Her husband, Robert, died in 1970. In addition to her sister, Catherine, surviving are her two daughters, Carol A. Palma and Barbara Isola; a brother, Nicholas Poggi, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Christopher's Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. KATHLEEN ABRAHAMSEN, 95 Native of Ireland lived in Huguenot Monday, November 28, 2005 Huguenot resident Kathleen F. (Pat) Abrahamsen, 95, a retired secretary, died Saturday in Atlantic Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City, N.J. She had been vacationing with her daughter and son-in-law. Born Kathleen Francis Gallagher in Killeen, County Mayo, Ireland, she moved to Manhattan as a young woman during the 1920s. She worked as a secretary for several Manhattan companies, including Consolidated Brokers, where she was an assistant to an insurance broker. It was there that she met her future husband, Alfred Abrahamsen. The couple married in 1942. A month later, Mr. Abrahamsen was drafted into the Army and she followed him to Douglas Army Air Base in Arizona. There, she worked at the former Station Hospital as a dental technician. After Mr. Abrahamsen was discharged from the service in 1944, the couple returned to Manhattan. They moved to Huguenot in the early 1950s, where Mrs. Abrahamsen lived until her death. She worked for the New York's World's Fair in Flushing Meadows, Queens, supervising attendants working on its monorail system. Her workers grew so fond of her they treated her to the monorail's last ride in 1965 and named a car in her honor. A dedicated woman, she worked until last year as a chairwoman for the Board of Elections in her district. Mrs. Abrahamsen also enjoyed traveling and had visited Canada, Mexico, Ireland, Spain, Norway and Morocco, in addition to 48 states, according to her daughter, Lynn Turkus. She enjoyed gardening and her rhododendrons, which grew to almost 10 feet tall, were enjoyed by many people passing by in her neighborhood when they were in bloom. Another of her mother's hobbies was trying to beat her son-in-law, Robert Turkus, at the game of Scrabble, her daughter added. Mrs. Abrahamsen was a member of the Mount Loretto Friendship Club, Tottenville. Her husband of 37 years, Alfred, died in 1979. In addition to her daughter, Lynn, surviving Mrs. Abrahamsen are two sisters, Maryellen Barton and Rita Rhatigan, and two brothers, Michael and Jack Gallagher. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Casey-McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in St. Clare's R.C. Church, both Great Kills. DORIS SKINNER BOWE, 77 Retired teacher, passionate gardener Monday, November 28, 2005 Doris Skinner Bowe, 77, of Manchester Center, Vt., a former Staten Islander, retired teacher and passionate gardener, died Saturday at home. Born Doris Skinner in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, she was raised in New Dorp in a section formerly known as the Garden Colony. Mrs. Bowe earned a degree in education from the State University of New York at Oswego, and taught in various public elementary schools on Staten Island, Long Island and in New Jersey for many years. She married Robert Henry Bowe in 1951 and the couple lived on Long Island and in West Brighton before relocating to Vermont in the 1980s. After her retirement in 1985, Mrs. Bowe divided her time between her home in Vermont and the home of her daughter, Lisa Bowe, in Hobe Sound, Fla. While living in Florida, she collaborated with her daughter on residential remodeling and home decorating projects, and volunteered for the Port Salerno school reading program. In Vermont, she volunteered at Manchester Health Services and Hildeen, the homestead of Robert Todd Lincoln. Mrs. Bowe enjoyed gardening. Described by her family as a loyal and compassionate friend, Mrs. Bowe could be found many evenings at the center of a close and jovial circle of companions. Even closer to her heart were her two children, Robert and Lisa. Mrs. Bowe was a member of Castleton Hill Moravian Church, Castleton Corners. Her husband of 41 years, Robert Henry Bowe, died in 1992. In addition to her children, Robert and Lisa, Mrs. Bowe is survived by her sister, Oonah Douglas. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a service at 10 a.m. in Castleton Hill Moravian Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. ARTHUR FUGATE, 64 Retired hospital police officer Monday, November 28, 2005 Arthur Ray Fugate Sr., 64, of Stapleton, a retired hospital police officer, died Thursday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Born the oldest of 11 children in Tazewell, Tenn., Mr. Fugate moved to Brooklyn as a teen-ager. He moved to Clifton in 1972 and settled in Stapleton eight years ago. He received a certificate in heating and air conditioning maintenance from Apex Technical School, Manhattan, and an associate's degree in general studies from the College of Staten Island. Mr. Fugate attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice and Pace University, both Manhattan, for hospital police officer training. He worked in Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan before transferring to Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home, where he served for 20 years. Mr. Fugate retired in 2003. He was a member of a Manhattan Masonic Lodge and was an auxiliary police officer on Staten Island. Mr. Fugate enjoyed collecting antiques and watching pro wrestling on television. Surviving are his wife of 35 years, the former Mary Davis; his three sons, Arthur Jr., Aubrey and Mark; his daughter, Marcellina Fugate; a brother, Freddie; six sisters, Janice Lawrence, Janet Elliott, Betty Bennet, Rosa Smith, Jacqueline Ottey and Gwendolyn Jones, and one granddaughter. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in the Scamardella Funeral Home, West Brighton. Burial will follow in Silver Mount Cemetery, Silver Lake.
