TESSIE TAMBURRINO, 79 Retired office manager, bookkeeper Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Tessie Tamburrino, 79, of Westerleigh, a retired office manager and bookkeeper, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born Tessie Bisaccia in Manhattan, she moved to Brooklyn as a teen-ager. Mrs. Tamburrino settled in Westerleigh about 20 years ago. For 35 years, she was an office manager and bookkeeper at the former Alfar Imports in Manhattan, retiring in 1987. Mrs. Tamburrino was a member of the Christ the King Columbiettes. She liked to bowl every Tuesday with friends at Rab's Country Lanes followed by lunch at Perkins restaurant, both Dongan Hills. Mrs. Tamburrino enjoyed visiting Atlantic City as well as the neighborhood deli where she would buy scratch-offs and Lotto tickets. She also enjoyed knitting and cooking dinner for her friends and family, who said she was famous for her rice balls. Mrs. Tamburrino is survived by her husband of 55 years, Paul; her son, Stephen; her daughter, JoAnn Ferrante; two sisters, Louise D'Alessio and Elvira Magaraci, and six grandchildren. MAMIE GALANTE, 92 Prepared elaborate Christmas meals Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Staten Islander Mamie Galante, 92, a homemaker who loved to cook elaborate meals for her family at Christmas, died Sunday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Born Mamie Diliberti in Manhattan, Mrs. Galante was brought to Brooklyn as a child. She moved to Huguenot 15 years ago. She was committed to her family, and was particularly passionate about cooking, said her daughter-in-law, Mary Galante. "She was a very loving and devoted mother and grandmother," Mary Galante said. Mrs. Galante was a parishioner of Holy Child R.C. Church, Eltingville. Her husband, Paul, died in 1982. Surviving are two sons, Ben and Matt; a brother, Vito Diliberti; a sister, Kate Montelbano; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. MABLE SALFELDER, 93 Homemaker enjoyed spending time with family Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Lifelong Staten Islander Mable Salfelder, 93, of West Brighton, a homemaker, died Saturday at home. Born Mable Van Nostrand in Mariners Harbor, Mrs. Salfelder was brought to West Brighton by her family as a teenager. She attended Curtis High School. In the late 1930s, while working in Manhattan at the business database firm of Dun & Bradstreet, she was introduced to a co-worker's brother, Edward Salfelder. The couple married in 1941 and moved into the second unit of her parents' two-family home in West Brighton. In 1944, they settled into their own home nearby, where they remained for the next six decades. A quiet woman, Mrs. Salfelder enjoyed reading mystery and romance novels, particularly novels by Danielle Steel. She also enjoyed watching movies from the 1930s and 1940s. But her main pastime was tending to her family, said her son, Edward Salfelder. "She always put family first," he said, adding that she often made sacrifices for her children. "She made sure everyone had what they needed before she did." Her husband, Edward, died in 2003, just weeks short of their 62nd wedding anniversary. In addition to her son, Edward, surviving is another son, Robert and three grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. JOHN HANSON, 73 Retired accountant served in the Army Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Longtime Staten Islander John J. Hanson, 73, a retired accountant known to family and friends as "Smiling Jack," died Sunday in the Eger Rehabilitation Healthcare Center and Home, Egbertville, where he lived for the past five years. "He was friendly to everybody," said his daughter, Joanne Hanson. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Hanson lived in Westerleigh from 1968 to 2000. He served in the Army from 1954 until 1956, stationed in Japan following the Korean War. He was discharged at the rank of specialist third-class. Mr. Hanson graduated from St. John's University in Queens in 1961 with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He worked for J.P. Morgan for about 20 years, retiring in 1996. He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, often hosting barbecues. He enjoyed bowling at the former Victory Lanes in Castleton Corners, golfing at La Tourette Golf Course and playing volleyball at picnics or in the backyard. A parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh, Mr. Hanson was also a member of its Holy Name Society. His wife of 44 years, the former Mary O'Malley, died in 2000. Surviving are two sons, John and Robert Hanson; three daughters, Joanne Hanson, Jane Trachta and Susan Mulraney, and seven grandchildren. JOAN KEYES, 71 Former Island resident was a retired nurse Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Former Staten Islander Joan Keyes, 71, of Tarpon Springs, Fla,, a retired nurse, died Friday in Mease Countryside Hospital in Clearwater, Fla. Born Joan McHale in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, Mrs. Keyes moved to Ocean Breeze in 1944. She relocated to New Dorp in 1964 and had been living in Tarpon Springs since 1994. She graduated from the Kings County Hospital Nursing School in 1955 and worked as a nurse at the hospital from 1955 to the early 1960s, when she took 12 years off from work to raise her children. From 1974 until 1983 she was a nursing supervisor at Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Dongan Hills and the New Vanderbilt Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Clifton. From 1986 to 1990, when she retired, she was a school nurse at the St. George campus of the College of Staten Island. She was a member of the Rosary and Altar Society and the Mother's Club of Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp, and was also a den mother with the Cub Scout troop at the church. Mrs. Keyes and her four children were active in competitive swimming at the Staten Island YMCA in West Brighton and the Richmond County Country Club. After she moved to Florida, she enjoyed raising orchids and collecting teddy bears. She was a member of All Saints R.C. Church in Clearwater. Surviving are her husband of 49 years, Henry Keyes; three sons, Michael, Dennis and Kevin; a daughter, Maureen Schwarz, and nine grandchildren. GIOVANNA LEUZZI, 84 Former seamstress also owned a pizzeria Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Giovanna Leuzzi, 84, of Tompkinsville, a pizzeria owner who also worked as a seamstress, died Saturday in the Verrazano Nursing Home, Tompkinsville, where she had been a resident for the past 10 years. Born Giovanna D'Ambrosio in San Benedetto in Perillis, Italy, Mrs. Leuzzi moved to Buffalo, N.Y., in 1955. In 1956, she moved to Brooklyn and settled in West Brighton in 1980. Mrs. Leuzzi was employed for over 20 years as a seamstress by a clothing manufacturing company in Manhattan. In the 1970s, she left the company to co-own and operate a pizzeria in Queens with her late husband, Martino. The couple operated the restaurant for 15 years until their retirement in 1990. Family-oriented, Mrs. Leuzzi loved spending time with family members. "Her family was the most important part of her life, she was very close to her parents and family," said her niece, Josephine D'Ambrosio. "She was a very loyal person and she was someone who always put her family first." Her husband of 40 years, Martino, died in 2002. Surviving Mrs. Leuzzi are two brothers, Silvestro and Pasquale. ELIZABETH DUSIO-MUSINSKI, 97 Owned Angelo's Arlington Cafe for 32 years Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Elizabeth Dusio-Musinski, 97, of Westerleigh, owner and operator of the former Angelo's Arlington Cafe, died yesterday in the New Vanderbilt Nursing Home, Stapleton, where she had been a patient for the past week. Born Elizabeth Maestri in Lonato, Italy, she immigrated to the United States in 1933. She lived in Mariners Harbor before settling in Westerleigh in 1976. Mrs. Dusio-Musinski owned and operated the former Angelo's Arlington Cafe, which was actually located in Mariners Harbor, with her husband, Angelo, for 32 years. They retired in 1976. A member of the Blessed Sacrament Seniors Group, she was also a member of the Third Order of St. Francis, and she was extremely devoted to St. Padre Pio. She loved cooking Italian dishes, especially her homemade ravioli. She also enjoyed gardening and took pride in her huge backyard garden. "She was a very hard worker but the most important thing to her was her family," said her daughter, Katerina M. Baldassarre. "She was the best mother and the best cook." She was an active parishioner of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton. Mrs. Dusio-Musinski's husband of 22 years, Angelo Dusio, died in 1955. Her second husband of six years, Charles Musinski, died in 1966. In addition to her daughter, Katerina, Mrs. Dusio-Musinski is survived by her son, Emilio Dusio; a sister, Angela Maestri, and five grandchildren. ELEANOR GIORDANO, 88 Retired office supervisor lived in Concord Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Eleanor F. Giordano, 88, of Concord, a retired office supervisor, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born Eleanor F. Paolercio in Manhattan, she was brought to Concord as an infant in 1921. She moved to Manhattan in 1946 and also lived in Fort Wadsworth before settling in Concord in 1955. A graduate of Curtis High School, she also attended the Delahanty Institute, Manhattan. Mrs. Giordano was a supervisor at W.T. Grant's main office in Manhattan for 15 years. She retired in 1951. She then devoted herself to becoming a homemaker and raising her children. She was a member of the Patrick J. D'Alessio Auxiliary Post where she served as president for 15 years. She was also a past chapeau of Richmond Salon 99 of the 8 & 40. Mrs. Giordano enjoyed bowling and participated in the Thursday Ladies League. She also spent her time sewing, reading, doing word puzzles, playing Bingo, and taking trips to Atlantic City. Her most favorite thing to do, though, was spend time with her grandson, whom she affectionately referred to as "my sweetheart," according to her family. She was a parishioner of St. Sylvester's R.C. Church, Concord. Mrs. Giordano's husband of 56 years, Joseph, died in 2003. Her son, Raymond, died in 2002. Mrs. Giordano is survived by her daughter, Annmarie Upton; a sister, Marie Certo, and one grandson. CLARENCE BEACHAM, 84 Retired NYC Transit Authority worker Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Clarence (Les) Leslie Beacham Jr., 84, of Midland Beach, a retired New York City Transit Authority worker, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born in Norfolk, Va., Mr. Beacham lived in Kill Devils Hills, N.C., and returned to Norfolk, before settling in Midland Beach in 1962. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard stationed in the South Pacific. In North Carolina, Mr. Beacham was a hotel cook and fisherman for several years. While living in Norfolk he was in the roofing and siding business. For two years, Mr. Beacham was a roofer for a company on Staten Island. He then worked as a structure maintainer and emergency truck driver for the city Transit Authority in the Bronx. During this time, Mr. Beacham also worked at Sears in New Springville as a rug installer. He retired in 1983 from the Transit Authority. A jack of all trades, he performed many odd jobs for anyone, including those who were in need -- never charging them for his services if they couldn't afford it. Mr. Beacham enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading and cooking. Described as an animal lover and generous person, he supported the North Shore Animal League as well as educational and children's causes. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Thomas Killeen, who helped take care of him in his later years. Mr. Beacham's wife of 45 years, the former Evelyn Paul, died in 1987. In addition to his grandson, surviving are his son, Dale; his daughter, Dawn Beacham, and a brother, Carl. The funeral service will be Thursday at noon in the Richmond Funeral Home, Grant City. A burial of ashes will follow at Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood. Cremation arrangements are being handled by the Rosehill Crematory, Linden, N.J. CATHERINE CARAVELLO, 79 Homemaker enjoyed craft projects Tuesday, November 29, 2005 Catherine Caravello, 79, of Rosebank, a homemaker who enjoyed making crafts, died Sunday in New Vanderbilt Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clifton. Born Catherine McCorqudale in Brooklyn, she settled in Rosebank in 1955. Her family said she was a caring person who not only took care of her own family, but she also welcomed people into her home who had no place to go. She also cooked food for homeless people on Thanksgiving. Mrs. Caravello also was a "craft" person, who made her own crafts, including blankets. She was a parishioner of St. Mary's R.C. Church, Rosebank. Her son, Vincent, was killed in Vietnam in 1969. Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Joseph; two sons, Joseph Jr. and Matthew; a daughter, Carol Steiniger; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral is scheduled for this evening at 8 p.m. in the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp. Arrangements include cremation and interment of ashes will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
