VINCENT D'AMATO, 80 Bookbinder had a passion for dancing the jitterbug Wednesday, November 30, 2005 Vincent D'Amato, 80, a retired foreman and bookbinder, died yesterday at his New Dorp home. The Bronx native moved to Manhattan in 1946, and lived there for 22 years. Early in his career, Mr. D'Amato was a foreman for Blanchard Press in Manhattan, where he met his future wife, the former Alice Gerchario. In 1968, Mr. D'Amato and his wife moved to Staten Island, living first in Midland Beach before settling in New Dorp six years ago. He worked as a bookbinder for Skilcraft Bindery in Manhattan for 45 years. He retired in 1988. Mr. D'Amato was a member of Local 119, Bookbinders Union, Manhatttan. An avid baseball fan, he played softball for teams in Manhattan, such as Club 93 and Wagner's Tavern. His favorite baseball team was the New York Yankees. Mr. D'Amato also enjoyed reading, putting together jigsaw puzzles and taking trips to Atlantic City. He had a passion for dancing as well -- never missing the chance to do the jitterbug, said his family. In addition to his wife of 59 years, Alice, surviving Mr. D'Amato are his son, Gary; his daughter, Lois Perham; two brothers, Peter and Angelo; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the Richmond Funeral Home, Grant City. The arrangements include cremation. SISTER JOHN FERRAIOLI, 80 Principal of St. Roch's School for more than decade Wednesday, November 30, 2005 Sister John Gregory Ferraioli, 80, a member of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist who worked as a teacher and school principal in her native Staten Island, died Monday in New York Westchester Square Medical Center, the Bronx. The former Louise Lucy Ferraioli was born in Rosebank. Her father was a milkman and her mother a homemaker. Sister John Gregory had one brother and five sisters. She graduated from New Dorp High School, then attended Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., where she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education. Sister John Gregory received her master's degree at the former Richmond College, now the College of Staten Island, in the same field. She entered Mount St. John Convent in White Plains, N.Y., in 1951. She professed her first vows in 1953 and her final vows in 1958. In 2002, Sister John Gregory celebrated 50 years of religious service. At that time, she said: "I wanted to be a teacher, nurse and mother and I got it all in one package when I became a nun." From 1953 to 1962, she taught at St. Dominic's School in the Bronx. She moved to Stirling, N.J., in 1962, where she taught at the St. Vincent de Paul School for four years. In 1966, Sister John Gregory was transferred to Staten Island to teach at St. John Villa Academy in Arrochar. In 1970, she became the principal of St. Roch's School, Port Richmond, and held that position until 1981, when she returned to teach at St. John Villa. In 2002, she retired to the Community Retirement Home at Mount St. John Convent. "She loved being around little kids. She was a great first-grade teacher," said Sister Anne Marie of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist in the Bronx. Sister John Gregory is survived by her sister, Jennie Gianfagna, and many nieces and nephews. The funeral will be tomorrow from the A. RICHARD TOWARD, 39 Liked to fish at Lemon Creek Park with his father Wednesday, November 30, 2005 Richard J.K. Toward, 39, a native Staten Islander and former welder, died Nov. 21 at his home in Modesto, Calif. Born in Prince's Bay, Mr. Toward was reared by his adoptive parents, Malvina and the late Raymond Skelton. He was also known over the years as Joseph Skelton. He grew up in Tottenville and moved with his family to south Florida in 1986. He settled in Modesto in 1989. Mr. Toward worked as a welder for U-Haul before suffering a back injury. He was working for a moving company before he died. A graduate of Tottenville High School, he attended welding school in California in 1991. He was a former parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville. As a child, Mr. Toward liked to fish with his dad, Raymond, at Lemon Creek Park in Prince's Bay, a pastime that he enjoyed as an adult. After his adoption by the Skelton family, he remained close with his brother, Dale Toward Jr., who died in 1989, his family said. "He was outgoing and made friends easily. If there were more people like him, the world would be a better place," said his sister, Deborah Colvil. Mr. Toward enjoyed collecting and repairing watches. In addition to his mother, Malvina, and sister, Deborah, surviving are his fiancee, Sherrita Oliver; his daughter, Justine Toward; his stepson, Ryan Knowles; seven brothers, Peter, Raymond, Wayne, Michael, John, Richard and Roger Skelton, and three more sisters, Helene Skelton, Kathy LiForte-Martinez and Susan Toward. MARGARET DOUGAN, 94 Castleton Corners resident enjoyed making crafts Wednesday, November 30, 2005 Margaret Dougan, 94, of Castleton Corners, a retired office clerk who was fond of gardening and crafts, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born Margaret Murray in Brooklyn, she settled in Castleton Corners in 1985. Mrs. Murray worked as an office clerk for 15 years with Squibb International, a pharmaceuticals company formerly located in Brooklyn and now known as Bristol-Myers Squibb. She retired in the 1980s. An avid reader, Mrs. Murray enjoyed making crafts, sewing and gardening -- especially growing vegetables. Her husband of 54 years, William, died in 1988. Surviving are her daughter, Margaret Killen; three grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. in the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners. Burial will follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park, Farmingdale, L.I. JOHN COSTELLO JR., 79 Known for his skills as carpenter and house painter Wednesday, November 30, 2005 John V. Costello Jr. of Whitehall, Pa., a retired firefighter and World War II veteran, died Sunday in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, Pa. He was 79. A native of Stapleton, Mr. Costello -- known as Jack to family and friends -- graduated from Curtis High School. As a youngster, he and a few friends started the Royal Blue Drum and Bugle Corps on Staten Island. According to his family, they competed both on and off the Island and one year marched in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in Manhattan. He stayed with the corps, playing the bugle, until 1947. Mr. Costello served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946, stationed aboard the USS Dayton. A seaman first class, he was a member of the original crew and was part of the fire-control division. Before he entered the service, Mr. Costello played sandlot football with the Green Bombers for two years. He also played for and managed the Paramount Grill softball team for 20 years after he left the service. After World War II, Mr. Costello attended the former Merchants & Bankers Business College in Manhattan, where he studied accounting and business. He became a supervisor in the treasury department of the Isthmian Lines Steamship Co., also Manhattan, working there for 10 years. Meanwhile, he held onto his dream of becoming a city firefighter. After passing the tests, Mr. Costello was ready to join, but because of height restrictions at that time, he had to wait 10 years before requirements were changed and he was accepted. He began his career at the former Engine Co. 12, Manhattan, but did the bulk of his service at Engine Co. 155 in New Brighton. He retired with 19 years on the job, in 1977, after he suffered a neck injury when he fell into an oil burner pit. "My father was the first to help somebody," said his daughter, Colleen Pace. Mr. Costello was a parishioner of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church, Stapleton, where he married the former Joy Marie Wille on Nov. 3, 1951. The church has seen several generations of the family's weddings. In January 2002, the Costellos celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a party at the Great Kills Yacht Club, where Mr. Costello was a member. He was also a member of the Staten Island FDNY Retirees. The Costellos moved to South Beach in 1958. They relocated to Whitehall in 1985. Before the Dodgers left Brooklyn, Mr. Costello was a dedicated fan, and since then has rooted for the New York Giants and Yankees. "My father had a wide circle of family and friends, and he was always considered the life of the party," said his daughter. He was especially close to his wife's family, she added. Mr. Costello was also known to friends and family for his skills as a carpenter and house painter. In addition to his wife, Joy, and his daughter, Colleen, surviving are his two sons, John III and Roy, and three grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church. The arrangements include cremation. JENNIE COSTA, 98 Family always came first for finisher of men's coats Wednesday, November 30, 2005 Jennie Costa, 98, a retired coat finisher, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. Born Jennie Bullara in Manhattan, she was brought to Sicily, Italy, in 1908. She returned to Manhattan in 1927, then moved with her family to Brooklyn in 1952. Mrs. Costa entered Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home in 2002. She worked as a finisher of men's coats for Solomon and Sons, a Manhattan garment manufacturer, for about 30 years, retiring in 1958. In her leisure time, Mrs. Costa liked to cook, play cards, and baby-sit her grandchildren. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe R.C. Church in Brooklyn. Mrs. Costa's husband of 42 years, Saverio, died in 1974. "She was a very compassionate, warm and loving grandmother," said her granddaughter, Jeanne Medwed. "She helped raise us, and her family always came first." Also surviving Mrs. Costa are her son, Vincent; her daughter, Mary Tripodi; five sisters, Rosalia Sardella, Carmela Militello, Antonia Spallino, Savatrice Stansu and Rachela Adrignola; seven more grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral was scheduled for today from the Ralph Aievoli & Son Funeral Home, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in St. Athanasius R.C. Church, both Brooklyn. Burial was to follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. FRANK GALLOWAY, 49 Sanitation laborer was athletic and loved surfing Wednesday, November 30, 2005 Frank R. Galloway, 49, of Ocean Beach, N.J., a Sanitation laborer, died yesterday in Community Medical Center, Toms River, N.J., after a long illness. Born in Red Bank, N.J., he moved to South Beach in 1958, and attended New Dorp High School for three years. In 1975, he relocated to Toms River, where he graduated from Toms River South High School. He settled in Ocean Beach in 1998. Mr. Galloway had worked as a Sanitation laborer for the Dover Township (N.J.) Public Works for 17 years. He was still working at the time of his death. He was extremely athletic, participating in his high school's football, basketball and baseball programs. He also coached a Little League team in Toms River. Mr. Galloway loved to surf at Lavalette Beach, N.J. Surfing led to lifesaving, according to his family, and over the years they said he rescued about 10 people who were drowning. A trustee of the Ocean Beach Surf Club, Mr. Galloway enjoyed lifting weights. While living on Staten Island, he was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and was a parishioner of Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach. He was well-loved by all of his senior neighbors, whom he helped all the time, said his uncle, Don O'Berg. He always enjoyed playing with the local children and his friends and family. Mr. Galloway is survived by his brother, Edward, and his longtime girl friend, Claudia Serecsko. The funeral service will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Timothy E. Ryan Home For Funerals, Toms River. EVELYN BADSTEIN, 85 Carmel Richmond nurse's aide liked to crochet, read Wednesday, November 30, 2005 Native Staten Islander Evelyn Josephine Ernst Badstein, 85, of Efland, N.C., a homemaker and retired nurse's aide, died Monday at her home. The former Evelyn Josephine Ernst was born in Grasmere and moved to Grant City in 1939, after marrying Joseph Harry Badstein. The couple moved to New Brighton in the early 1950s, and to Grymes Hill in 1959, in a house they had built. Mrs. Badstein worked for close to 15 years as a nurse's aide at Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Dongan Hills. She retired in 1990. After 52 years of marriage, Mr. Badstein died in 1991. Mrs. Badstein moved to Pine Bush, N.Y., in 1991 and to Chapel Hill, N.C., in 1998. She settled in Efland in 1999. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Center in Efland-Cheeks, N.C. Mrs. Badstein enjoyed crocheting -- creating blankets, sweaters and clothing for family and friends. She also was a voracious reader, her family said. Surviving are her son, Joseph H. Jr.; a sister, Joan Goodman; a brother, Albert Holtje; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Badstein's daughter, Evelyn Badstein, died in 1991. Her son, Bernard, died in 1995. The funeral service will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel of the Walker's Funeral Home, Mebane, N.C. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. EDGAR KREUTZBERG, 89 Staten Island Yacht Club commodore loved boating Wednesday, November 30, 2005 Former Staten Islander Edgar V. Kreutzberg, 89, of Tinton Falls, N.J., the owner of a newspaper distribution franchise and an avid boater, died Nov. 18 in Monmouth County Medical Center, Long Branch, N.J. Born in Woodbridge, N.J., Mr. Kreutzberg spent his youth there before moving to Metuchen, N.J., where he lived for 20 years. He then lived in Great Kills for 10 years. He returned to Metuchen for a time before settling in Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls. For many years, he worked as circulation director of the Independent Newspaper in Woodbridge. Later, with his wife, the former Nellie Kopec, he purchased a New York Daily News distribution franchise based in New Dorp, and served as president and treasurer. Mr. Kreutzberg sold the business when he retired in 1989. Active in the Staten Island Yacht Club, he served as commodore in 1977. Mr. Kreutzberg also enjoyed outings with his wife aboard their boat, the Nellie Bly II. A member of P.T. Boats Inc. -- a historical nonprofit organization established by veterans of the World War II PT service to preserve the history of the boats, popularly called the Mosquito Fleet, and the men who manned them -- the Kreutzbergs enjoyed attending the group's annual reunions. As members of the Navy League of the United States, they had made what was called a "controlled crash landing" aboard the USS Lexington and received certificates as members of the Tailhook Club. Mr. Kreutzberg was a member of the International Order of the Blue Gavel, a worldwide association of former yacht club commodores. His wife of 25 years, Nellie, died in 1996. "It was very important to him to enjoy his life fully. He loved being with his friends at the yacht club," said his daughter, Susan Calabrese. In addition to his daughter, Mr. Kreutzberg is survived by his son, Alan; his stepdaughter, Karen Alenski; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. His first wife, the former Marguerite M. Stefnagle, died in 1991. A memorial service will be held at the Staten Island Yacht Club in the spring, with burial of his ashes at sea.
