THERESA TROISI, 67 Met husband while working on Staten Island Ferry Sunday, October 02, 2005 Theresa A. Troisi, 67, of Rosebank, a homemaker and lifelong Staten Island resident, died Friday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton, after a year-long battle with complications from colon-cancer surgery. Born Theresa Parisi in Fort Wadsworth, she graduated from Curtis High School. At 2004 the age of 18, while working at the snack bar on the Staten Island Ferry, she met her husband, Alfred Troisi, a deckhand on the boat. They married in May 1957, and settled in Dongan Hills. Mrs. Troisi moved to Rosebank six years ago after her husband of 42 years died. She was a very generous person, according to her family, making donations to several organizations including Pax Christi Hospice, the American Cancer Society, the American Humane Society and various veterans groups. Mrs. Troisi enjoyed cooking, listening to music, going to the movies, dining on shrimp at Red Lobster, doing scratch-off Lotto tickets, collecting stuffed animals and dolls, and going on cruises -- including a trip to Florida and the Bahamas with her family this past May on the Norwegian Dawn, in between chemotherapy treatments. But her greatest love was reserved for her family. "She loved spending time with her two daughters, close friends and 'grand puppies,'" noted her daughter, Michele Sutton. "She didn't have any grandkids, but loved our dogs -- Petey Son, Veronica Ann, Rocco and Petra Marie -- feeding them treats under the table." "My mom had the ability to embrace anyone as her own," said her daughter, MaryEllen Sawh. "She was everybody's mom." "She had a great sense of humor," added Mrs. Sutton. "My mom loved to laugh and brought life and joy when she walked into the room. She wasn't only my mom, but my best friend. She was my inner strength. I will miss her...she was the light of my life." Mrs. Troisi was remembered as "a wonderful friend and mother-in-law," by Mrs. Sutton's husband, William. And Irene Anglero, one of her best friends, said Mrs. Troisi "loved my children as if they were her grandchildren in a spiritual sense, as they are deceased. 'Tree' was an extraordinary person. I was very grateful to know her and love her as much as she loved me." In addition to her daughters, Michele and MaryEllen, Mrs. Troisi is survived by two brothers, Richard and Rocco Parisi. The funeral will be Tuesday with a service at 7:30 p.m. in the Scamardella Funeral Home, West Brighton. Burial will be Wednesday in St. John's Cemetery, Queens. Mrs. Fish's oldest grandchild, Corina Drucker, recalled going into grandma's pocketbook and finding goodies -- a piece of candy, a straw, Lysol to spray on shopping cart handles to make sure her children wouldn't get sick. Mrs. Fish was always prepared. During her last three years, she relished visits from her great-grandchildren and grandchildren. In addition to her granddaughter Corina, surviving are four sons, Paul (Butch) and Edward Fish, Rodal Mollineau and Donald Davison; a sister, Helen Fence; two more grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Fish's daughter, Beverly Fish, died in 1986. Her son, Raymond Fish, died in 2002, and another son, David Erickson, died four months ago. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, both Tottenville. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. He was a graduate of Curtis High School and went to work as a truck driver at his brother's Travis company -- Ortolano's Express. He had worked there for 22 years. "He loved trucks," said his brother, Bob, explaining he had owned his business for 35 years. "He grew up around trucks." Mr. Hoke also loved animals, especially his two cats, Sebastian and Christopher -- whom he had nursed back to health when the cats were diagnosed with feline diabetes, his brother explained. In addition, Mr. Hoke enjoyed photography, taking pictures mostly of animals and trucks and placing the images in scrapbooks. "He kept unbelievable scrapbooks," said his brother. Born Giovannina (Jennie) Ricciardi in Brooklyn, she moved to Staten Island in 1996 1992, when she entered the Sts. Cosmas and Damian Adult Home, Mariners Harbor. For about 15 years, Mrs. Fusco worked at Chase Bank in Manhattan, first as a page, and then as an executive receptionist. She later went to work as a paraprofessional at PS 282 in the Park Slope section of Brooklyn, before retiring around 1975. Although Mrs. Fusco left high school as a teen-ager in order to help her family, she went back to school when she was in her 40s and earned a General Equivalency Diploma. A member of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Mrs. Fusco enjoyed gardening, traveling and entertaining guests at dinner parties. She was a great cook, her family said, loved to decorate and dressed very stylishly. Her daughter, Sara Perrone, described her as a quiet, dignified and reserved woman -- "Always a perfect lady." HELEN WATTERSTON, 91 Liked hosting parties and time with grandchildren Sunday, October 02, 2005 Helen Watterston, 91, of Castleton Corners, a homemaker whose home was always open to family and guests, died Friday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, where she had been a patient for two weeks. Born Helen Gregor in Lorain, Ohio, she moved to California when she was 16 years old to work for her cousin's pharmacy. A few years later, she relocated to Bountiful, Utah, where she met her William Watterston, a sergeant in the U.S. Army. The couple married in 1937. For three years during World War II, while her husband was off serving in Europe, Mrs. Watterston worked in a Sperry Rand factory that had been converted into a military plant. Upon her husband's return home in 1944, the couple moved to Liberty, N.Y. Eight years later, they relocated to midtown Manhattan, where Mrs. Watterston worked as a supervisor of cleaning for City and Suburban Homes. The Watterstons enjoyed entertaining in their Manhattan home. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Mrs. Watterston would often cook homemade meals for visiting servicemen that she met through her daughter's Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen Club. Her selflessness extended, of course, to her own family. Upon Mr. Watterston's retirement, the couple moved to Queens to help raise their four grandchildren. "First, she raised me; then, she raised my kids," marveled her daughter, Noramary McCabe, a single parent. "My parents did everything as a couple, and they actively participated in my children's lives." The Watterstons moved to New Springville in 1984. Four years later, upon the death of her husband of 51 years, Mrs. Watterston moved in with her daughter, Noramary, who was now living in Westerleigh. For four years, Mrs. Watterston had resided in the Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners. Mrs. Watterston attended All Saints Episcopal Church, Willowbrook. She liked bowling, cooking and hosting parties -- but especially spending time with her family. "My mother loved raising her grandkids and took a sense of pride in being my father's wife," said Ms. McCabe. "She was such a lady." In addition to her daughter, Noramary, Mrs. Watterston is survived by four grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The funeral service will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Iselin, N.J. Family, friends mourn DOT worker killed in crash Nick Antico succumbed to injuries on Tuesday after being struck by an SUV Sunday, October 02, 2005 With his quick wit and immense capacity to care, Nick Antico, 35, of Willowbrook, wove a wide net of relatives and friends. Yesterday, this net hung limp with grief as more than 150 people attended his funeral at Our Lady of Guadalupe R.C. Church in Brooklyn. Antico, a husband and father to an 8-year-old girl, died Tuesday after a speeding SUV slammed into him and a Department of Transportation crew working on Slosson Avenue near the Staten Island Expressway. His premature death roused the ire of many of his co-workers, friends and family, who loved his mischievous personality, strong sense of humor and passion for life. Yesterday, a sense of loss weighed down the sunny, cool morning as more than 100 people, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, queued up on the double yellow line dividing Brooklyn's 73rd Avenue. When a hearse pulled up in front of the church, the silence was broken by a woman sobbing and wailing, "Oh Nicky! Oh Nicky!" Ethereal organ music and a woman singing beckoned mourners into the church, where they sat in pews, dabbing tissues at their eyes and clasping their hands in prayer. "If we love someone, we're going to grieve," said the Rev. Matteo Rizzo. "There's nothing that I nor anyone could say at this moment to change the grief." Sniffles turned to sobs after Antico's niece gave an anguished eulogy from the pulpit. "I feel like we're living a nightmare," the niece said. "I keep calling you, hoping you're going to answer. She talked of Antico's pranks, jokes and ability to crack backs. She described how he could walk into a room and make everyone laugh. She said he protected and comforted her. "I admire you so much," she cried. "It rained the night you left us. Those were your tears of joy." Antico was raised in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn in a house with two other families, said Eleonora Russo of New Dorp. "We grew up like brother and sister," she said. Antico's close friends became even more of an extended family after he was orphaned as a teen-ager, Ms. Russo said, when his mother and father died one month apart. He graduated from Lafayette High School in Brooklyn, she said, and went to work at Queen Ann Ravioli & Macaroni, where he made pasta with his brothers. He lived in Connecticut before moving to Willowbrook. About six years ago, Antico took a job with the Department of Transportation. He loved bike riding, having barbecues with his friends and family, and cars of any kind, said Basilio Alonso Jr., a Brooklyn resident who grew up with Antico. "He was the life of the party, like a light bulb," he said, adding, "I feel numb." The person driving the SUV that killed Antico "damaged a lot of his friends," Ms. Russo said. "All there is is anger," she said. "I would just like not to feel anger anymore." The funeral arrangements, which were handled by Scarpaci Funeral Home, included burial at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn.
