WILLIAM CATHERWOOD, 79 World War II vet became a math teacher Monday, October 03, 2005 William Catherwood of Fairfield Glade, Tenn., 79, a World War II veteran, retired teacher and mechanical engineer, died Wednesday in Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, Va., while en route to a vacation in Nova Scotia. The youngest of 10 children, he was born in Brooklyn and was brought to Staten Island as an infant. Mr. Catherwood lived in Richmond and in New Dorp, but spent most of his life in Great Kills before he moved to Fairfield Glade in the late 1980s. As a child, he enjoyed skating on Jack's Pond, spent his summers at Cedar Grove Beach Club in New Dorp, and was a member of the second graduating class of St. Clare's School in Great Kills. After graduating from McKee High School, Mr. Catherwood served in Europe in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following his tour of duty, he attended Wagner College and the former Sampson (N.Y.) College before earning a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in engineering from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. In the 1950s, Mr. Catherwood worked as a mechanical engineer at the former S.S. White Dental Manufacturing Co., Prince's Bay. For the following decade, he worked in the former Westinghouse plant in Metuchen, N.J. In the 1970s, he owned a blueprint shop, Reliable Blueprint, in St. George, and began teaching mathematics at the former Staten Island Community College. He went on to teach math and mechanical drawing at his alma mater, McKee High School, as well as at Stuyvesant High School and Staten Island Technical High School in the 1980s. He retired in 1987. While he lived on Staten Island, Mr. Catherwood was a member of the Great Kills Social Club, the St. Clare's Father's Club, and the Great Kills Athletic Club, where he was athletic director in the 1950s. He served the community through Staten Island Aid for Retarded Children Inc. and an Island chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the Anchor Club in Metuchen, N.J., the Staten Island chapter of the New York State Society of Professional Engineers and a longtime parishioner of St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills. At the time of his death, Mr. Catherwood was a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi R.C. Church, Fairfield Glade, and a member of a Tennessee chapter of the Knights of Columbus. As a member of the St. Francis Columbarium committee, he designed the columbarium in which he will be entombed in November. Mr. Catherwood enjoyed going on cruises with his wife of 51 years, the former June Armend. The couple traveled to Europe, Alaska, and the Caribbean, and often took family trips to the Poconos. Mr. Catherwood went golfing several times a week. "He was social, fun-loving and optimistic," said his daughter, Colleen Kubinski. "He was a man who believed that everyone he loved would do their best. He led us all by his example." In addition to his wife, June, and his daughter, Colleen, surviving are his son, Barry; a sister, Frances Watson, and seven grandchildren. His daughter, Linda Catherwood, died last year. SUSAN GIORDANO, 78, Former seamstress enjoyed cooking Monday, October 03, 2005 Susan S. Giordano, 78, of New Springville, a homemaker and former seamstress, died Saturday of cancer in the Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners. Born Susan S. Tridico in Brooklyn, she attended James Madison High School. Mrs. Giordano settled in New Springville in 1984. She worked as a seamstress in Manhattan's garment industry for seven years before becoming a homemaker and raising her children. Mrs. Giordano was a member of the Willowbrook chapter of the AARP. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, crocheting and watching and buying items from the QVC shopping network. Mrs. Giordano's husband of 29 years, Carl, died in 1982. Surviving are her two daughters, Maria Semler and Roseanne Semler; a sister, Eve Porto, and four grandchildren. MILTON TURNER, 60 Parks service worker enjoyed socializing Monday, October 03, 2005 Milton (Milty) R. Turner, 60, of Tottenville, a Parks service worker, died Saturday at home after a short illness. Born in Brooklyn, he settled in Tottenville in 1999. Mr. Turner's career with 2002 the city spanned 40 years, beginning with more than 10 years as a civilian employee of a Police Department precinct in Brooklyn. He then became an associate for the city Parks Department at Brooklyn's Prospect Park. For the last four years, he worked at Wolfe's Pond Park, Huguenot. He retired in June. He was a member of a Knights of Columbus chapter in Brooklyn. A religious family man, he loved to socialize and meet new people. "Everybody knew him," said his brother, Tom, adding that his brother also treated his niece and nephew, Tommy John and Lauren Turner, as his own children. Mr. Turner was a member of Gateway Cathedral, Richmond Valley, and the First Bible Church, Pleasant Plains. In addition to his brother, Tom, surviving are two more brothers, Arthur and John, and three sisters, Pat Curiale, Millie Bollman and Mary Morrone. MARY BRACE, 91 Enjoyed volunteering at nursing home Monday, October 03, 2005 Mary F. Brace, 91, a homemaker who enjoyed volunteer work, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born Mary F. Gillen in Brooklyn, she was brought to West Brighton as a child. Mrs. Brace graduated from the Sacred Heart School, West Brighton, and attended Port Richmond High School. She moved to Port Richmond in 1950 and to Conneaut, Ohio, in 1966. Mrs. Brace returned to Staten Island in 1993, living with her daughter in Castleton Corners. She lived in the Carmel Apartments, Dongan Hills, for several years before entering the Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners, two years ago. While living in the Carmel Apartments, Mrs. Brace would volunteer her time to bring patients of the Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center who used wheelchairs to mass at the center. She enjoyed spending time with her 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, playing Bingo and watching television, especially "Wheel of Fortune." When she was younger, Mrs. Brace enjoyed singing and dancing and when she grew older she enjoyed doing these things with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners, for several years, and attended mass at the Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Brace's husband of about 41 years, Howard, died in 1975. Her son, Howard Jr., died in 1992. In addition to her 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, she is survived by her two sons, Mark and John, and her daughter, Mary Schaub. JOSEPH CALLAHAN, 61 Retired firefighter and contractor Monday, October 03, 2005 Joseph Callahan, 61, of New Dorp, a retired firefighter and 2002 contractor, died Saturday at home. Born in Brooklyn, he settled in New Dorp five years ago. Mr. Callahan was a city firefighter at Engine 245 in Coney Island. After 34 years on the job, he retired in 2002. He was a member of the Fire Department's Emerald Society. Mr. Callahan also did contracting and framing work all over the city for 25 years. A graduate of Chelsea High School in Brooklyn, he served in the U.S. Army, based in Texas, during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Mr. Callahan enjoyed playing golf and taking trips to Las Vegas. Surviving are his son, Alan; his daughter, Krista Sierra; two brothers, Francis and Gerard, and two granddaughters. EUGENE EVERETT, 67 Retired Sanitation worker enjoyed family gatherings Monday, October 03, 2005 Eugene Thomas Everett, 67, of Stapleton, a lifelong Staten Islander and retired New York City Sanitation worker, died Friday at home. Born in New Brighton, he 2004 settled in Stapleton at the age of 30. A graduate of McKee High School and a veteran of the Air Force, Mr. Everett worked for seven years as a track worker for New York City Transit in Manhattan. He then worked 20 more years for the city Department of Sanitation, retiring in 1991. Mr. Everett loved family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed reading the newspaper and watching the History Channel. He also enjoyed trips to Atlantic City. His wife, the former Jessie Rainey, died in 1970. Surviving are three sons, Eugene Jr., Kevin and Michael; two daughters, Michelle Everett and Doreen Rainey; a brother, Marshall Caldwell; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. Caputo, 51, of Huguenot, a retired cleaner, died Saturday in Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Dongan 1996 Hills, where he had been a resident for the past five years. Born in Brooklyn, he graduated from South Shore High School in Brooklyn and moved to Huguenot in 1995. He worked as a cleaner for New York Transit in Brooklyn for 23 years, retiring in 1998. Mr. Caputo enjoyed fishing and traveling to Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, Huguenot. Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Anne Caputo; two sons, Anthony and Charles Jr.; two daughters, Lauren and Jennifer Caputo, and a brother, Michael Caputo. CANDIDA VITIELLO, 92 Native of Italy was former seamstress Monday, October 03, 2005 Candida (Katie) Vitiello, 92, of Castleton Corners, a native of Italy and a former 2003 seamstress, died yesterday in Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners. Born Candida Pacifico in Naples, she moved to Brooklyn in 1928. She settled in Castleton Corners six years ago. Mrs. Vitiello worked for several years as a seamstress in various Brooklyn clothing factories. She was a member of the Amalgamated Cotton Garment Workers Union. A member of the Narrows Senior Citizens Club in Brooklyn, she also started the Rosary Club while living at the rehabilitation center. Mrs. Vitiello enjoyed sewing, ceramics, playing Bingo, cooking and baking cookies. Surviving are her son, Salvatore; her daughter, Geraldine Vitiello; a brother, Chris Pacifico; a sister, Louise Mastrarrigo; six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
