WILLIAM RICHARDS, 74 Retired firefighter Tuesday, October 04, 2005 William Joseph (Joe) Richards, 74, of New Dorp, a retired firefighter and lifelong Staten Islander, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born in Stapleton, Mr. Richards moved to Oakwood 1993 in 1959 before settling in New Dorp in 1976. Mr. Richards worked as New York City firefighter for 28 years, assigned to several companies throughout Brooklyn. He retired from Marine Co. 9, Stapleton, in 1989. According to family, he received several meritorious awards for his service. Before working for the Fire Department, Mr. Richards was a longshoreman for 15 years, working at piers throughout the city. He was also a bartender for several bars in Stapleton for about 25 years. Mr. Richards graduated from McKee Vocational High School. He was the founding member and past first vice commander of the Staten Island branch of AmVets. He was also a member of the Ocean Yacht Club, Stapleton. Mr. Richards was a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, serving from 1951 to 1953. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars. Mr. Richards enjoyed traveling and loved spending summer at his summer home on Long Beach Island, N.J. He was a sports enthusiast who loved the New York Yankees and horseracing. Mr. Richards was a parishioner of St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood. My father was most proud of his family, he enjoyed spending time with his eight grandchildren. I looked up to my father and he showed me how a man loves and takes care of his family, said his son, Steven Richards. Along with his son, also surviving are a wife of 47 years, the former Jean Barclay; two sons, William and Robert; a daughter, Joanne Rettle, and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 10:15 a.m. at St. Charles Church. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. ROY WALSH, 59 Credit analyst Tuesday, October 04, 2005 Roy L. Walsh, 59, of Mariners Harbor, a retired credit analyst, died yesterday at home of cancer. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Walsh later moved to the Bronx then to Queens in 1972, after getting married. He settled in Mariners Harbor in 1978. Mr. Walsh worked for 29 years as a credit analyst for GMAC in Manhattan before retiring in 2002. He graduated from the former high school that was based aboard the S.S. John W. Brown, a liberty ship which was used as a vocational high school in New York City, from 1946 to 1982, for youngsters exploring a naval career. While working full-time, Mr. Walsh attended night school at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn, where he studied business. Mr. Walsh served as achief in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, from 1966 to 1968. He was a parishioner of St. Michael's/St. Clement's R.C. Parish, Mariners Harbor. Mr. Walsh served for 20 years as a member of the board of directors of the East Shore Little League. He loved fishing and was an avid fan of the New York Jets. He loved his family very much. He was a true family man and he loved kids, said his wife of 33 years, the former Catherine LaMonaca. In addition to his wife, surviving are a son, Matthew Walsh, and two daughters, Melissa Walsh and Laura Guerra. The funeral will be Thursday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's R.C. Church, Mariners Harbor. A private cremation will follow. PHILIP ZUFFI, 39 Ship carpenter Tuesday, October 04, 2005 Lifelong Staten Islander Philip Zuffi, 39, a ship carpenter, died Saturday in his Huguenot home of cancer. Born in Rosebank, he settled in Huguenot in 1989, after 2004 marrying his wife, the former Danielle Mancino. Mr. Zuffi graduated from St. Peter's Boys High School and attended St. John's University, Grymes Hill. For seven years until becoming ill, he was a ship carpenter at the St. George Ferry Terminal, working for the city Department of Transportation. Mr. Zuffi enjoyed fixing up his 1969 Corvette, hunting and spending time with his two children. He liked to watch his 12-year-old son, Philip Jr., play in Little League baseball games, and take his daughter, Tiffany, 15, to the beach. Mr. Zuffi also liked taking vacations with his family. "He just liked to have fun," his wife said. "Everybody came first. He always went out of his way for everybody." Mr. Zuffi was a parishioner of St. Mary's R.C. Church, Rosebank. In addition to his wife of 16 years, Danielle, his son, Philip Jr., and his daughter, Tiffany, surviving are a brother, Robert A., and three sisters, Barbara Downing, Edith Ferrie and Marguerite Siedenfaden. MARY LESIZZA, 90 Charter member of Deborah Hospital Foundation Tuesday, October 04, 2005 Longtime Staten Islander Mary Lesizza, 90, a former department store salesperson, died Sunday at the New Vanderbilt Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clifton, where she had been staying for the past five years. Born in Port Richmond, Ms. Lesizza moved to Hoffman Island at nine months after coming down with polio. She stayed there for two years, then returned to Port Richmond and graduated from Port Richmond High School. Ms. Lesizza moved to Hartford, Conn., in 1940, working as a salesperson at a high-end department store there until she relocated to Springfield, Mo., in 1962. She moved back to Port Richmond in 1972, staying there until 2000. Ms. Lesizza loved crocheting, painting and playing the piano. She was also a lifetime charter member of the Deborah Hospital Foundation. While on the Island, she was a parishioner of St. Roch's R.C. Church, Port Richmond. She always was happy with people around her, young and old alike, said her nephew, Robert Stanley. Ms. Lesizza loved her nine nieces and nephews dearly, Stanley said. We were her children, he said. Surviving are two sisters, Agnes Elzer and Julia Stanley. A service will be held tonight at 8 p.m. at A. Azzara Funeral Home, South Beach. Arrangements include cremation. JOHN HOLDER, 42 Postal worker Tuesday, October 04, 2005 Lifelong Rosebank resident John W. Holder Jr., a postal worker, died yesterday in Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx. He was 42. A graduate of McKee High School, he spent the last six 1985 years as a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service at the St. George station. He was still working at the time of his death. Mr. Holder enjoyed golf, hockey, baseball and fishing. He was a parishioner of St. Mary's R.C. Church, Rosebank. Surviving are his wife of about 18 years, the former Roxanne Shirripa; his son, Ryan; two daughters, Karin and Kristen Holder; his parents, John Sr. and Francine; his brother, Michael, and his sister, Michelle Holder. DOMINICK LABRECIOSA, 85 Auditor was high scorer in bowling Tuesday, October 04, 2005 Longtime Staten Islander Dominick Labreciosa, 85, of Great Kills, died Saturday at Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home. Born in Hoboken, N.J., Mr. Labreciosa lived in Jersey 2005 City and in the Bath Beach section of Brooklyn before settling in Great Kills in 1969. He graduated New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1943, receiving a medical discharge as a corporal. He then worked as an auditor for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for 35 years, retiring in 1977. Mr. Labreciosa loved to bowl and was a high scorer. He bowled over 200 for 22 straight games, and also garnered an award for bowling a 289 at the former Sunset Lanes bowling alley in New Springville. He also loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Mr. Labreciosa was a parishioner at Holy Child R.C. Church, Eltingville. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, the former Marie String; his son, Louis Labreciosa; his daughter, Roseann Scarna, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be today from the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville, with a 10:45 a.m. mass at Holy Child Church. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. ARNOLD KALLEBERG, 64 Retired carpenter Tuesday, October 04, 2005 Longtime Staten Islander Arnold Kalleberg, 64, of Prince's Bay, a retired carpenter, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. Mr. Kalleberg was born in Brooklyn, growing up in a house in Bay Ridge that was eventually torn down to make way for the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. He kept a photo album filled with black-and-white photos he took chronicling the building of the bridge from both the Brooklyn and Staten Island sides. He moved to Prince's Bay in 1965. Mr. Kalleberg spent his career as a carpenter with Local 531 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He worked on many high-profile projects, including the World Trade Center, the Jacob K. Javits Center and city court buildings. He retired in 1994. Mr. Kalleberg served in the U.S. Army, based out of Fort Dix, N.J., in the 1960s. He enjoyed tinkering with cars. Mr. Kalleberg's wife, the former Elizabeth Evans, died in 2002. Surviving are his son, Roy A., and his brother Tor Kalleberg.
