SISTER SALVATRICE MARCELLINO, 95 St. John Villa principal began a mission in Africa Wednesday, October 05, 2005 Sister Salvatrice Marcellino, 95, a member of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. John the Baptist and a former principal at St. John Villa Academy in Arrochar, died Sept. 22 in Mount St. John Convent, Purchase, N.Y. She had resided there since 2001. Born in Washington, D.C., Sister Salvatrice entered the congregation on June 11, 1930 and made her first profession of vows on March 29, 1932. Her career in religious life, which spanned 74 years, began at St. Lucy Convent, Newark, N.J., where she taught elementary school for 15 years. She then was appointed superior of St. James Convent in Manhattan. From 1952 until 1959, Sister Salvatrice served with missions in Zambia. After her return from Africa, she worked at St. Vincent De Paul School in Stirling, N.J., and was principal of St. Dominic's School in the Bronx, where she was also superior of the convent. Sister Salvatrice then became principal of the elementary and high schools at St. John Villa Academy. She later went on missions to Chile from 1964 until 1969, and to Africa from 1969 to 1984. Upon returning to the United States, Sister Salvatrice once again returned to St. John Villa, where she taught in the high school until her retirement in 1998. "Sister truly was a beautiful reflection of Christ's gentle and loving heart," said Sister Ann Marie Damiani. "Her smile radiated the kindness and goodness that were so characteristic of her." Sister Salvatrice is survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral mass was at Mount St. John Convent, with burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y. PAT DeSANTO, 92 Helped customers with fruit, vegetables at Pathmark Wednesday, October 05, 2005 Pat DeSanto, 92, of Castleton Corners, a retired supermarket clerk, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, of cancer. Born and reared in Brooklyn, Mr. DeSanto moved to Castleton Corners 38 years ago. He worked for nearly 25 years as a laborer at the former Bethlehem Steel Co. shipyard in Mariners Harbor. Mr. DeSanto then became an employee of Pathmark Stores, working at several locations before taking a position as a produce clerk at the New Springville Pathmark. He worked there for 30 years, retiring in 1993. Mr. DeSanto was a familiar face who often helped customers choose the ripest and freshest fruit and vegetables, his family said. "He had a good rapport with customers," said his granddaughter, Christine McMahon. "He was very kindhearted, very sincere." Mr. DeSanto enjoyed reading and making weekly trips to Atlantic City. He was a former parishioner of St. Rita's R.C. Church, Meiers Corners. Mr. DeSanto's wife of 55 years, the former Margaret Valentino, died in 1988. In addition to his granddaughter, surviving are his daughter, Joan McMahon, and a brother, Frank DeSanto. LUCIA KEANE, 94 Taught third grade Wednesday, October 05, 2005 Lucia Keane, 94, of Middletown, N.Y, a longtime Staten Islander and retired parochial school teacher, died Sunday in St. Teresa's Nursing Home, Middletown. Born Lucia Santa Croce in the Bronx, she was brought to New Brighton when she was 5 years old and lived in that community for about 75 years. Mrs. Keane relocated to Huntington, L.I., around 1990, and to Middletown around 2001. In the early 1930s, she worked with her parents, who were a tailor and a dressmaker, in Manhattan's Garment District. After marrying John Thomas Keane, she was a homemaker for many years, before going back to college at age 50. After earning her degree from the former Staten Island Community College, now the College of Staten Island, Mrs. Keane taught third grade for 15 years at the former Assumption School in New Brighton before retiring around 1975. She also taught CCD at the school. A graduate of Curtis High School, Mrs. Keane enjoyed sewing and dressmaking, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. While on Staten Island, she was a parishioner of Assumption R.C. Church, New Brighton. "She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother, devoted to her family," said her daughter, Carol DeRoss. "She was the ultimate caretaker, always there when we needed her." Mrs. Keane's husband of 65 years, John, died in 1998. In addition to her daughter, Carol, surviving are her daughters, Mary Lou Singleton and Camille Perosi, 13 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Assumption Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Huntington. KATHRYN HENDRICKSON, 80 Volunteered at Zion Lutheran Church preschool Wednesday, October 05, 2005 Kathryn T. Hendrickson, a lifelong Staten Islander, pre-school volunteer and retired payroll secretary, died yesterday at her Meiers Corners home. She was 80. The former Kathryn Tregde was born in West Brighton and graduated from Curtis High School. She settled in Meiers Corners 28 years ago. Mrs. Hendrickson was payroll secretary at Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville, for about 20 years. She retired in 1990. At the time of her death, she also had volunteered for 20 years at the Zion Lutheran Church preschool in Willowbrook. "She loved working with the children," said her daughter, Barbara J. Russel. Mrs. Hendrickson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church senior group in Fords, N.J., and the Zion Association of Retired Persons in Willowbrook. An active 58-year member of Zion Lutheran Church, Mrs. Hendrickson sang soprano in the church's choir. She enjoyed cooking year-round, but was most renowned for her holiday Norwegian cookies. For the past three decades, she had enjoyed frequent RV camping trips with her husband at Ocean View Campground on the Jersey Shore. She and her husband also spent several winters vacationing in Clearwater, Fla. "My mother was always loving and concerned," said her son, Roy Jr. "She was dedicated to her family and always cared for others." In addition to her daughter, Barbara, and her son, Roy, surviving Mrs. Hendrickson are her husband of 54 years, Roy E. Sr.; a brother, John Tregde; three sisters, Gladys Tregde, and Marion and Alice Johnson, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday from the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond, with a service at 10 a.m. in Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood. JOSEPH GIORDANO, 83 WW II veteran helped build the Verrazano Bridge Wednesday, October 05, 2005 Joseph Giordano, 83, of Great Kills, a retired operating engineer, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. Born in Brooklyn, he settled in Great Kills 36 years ago. Mr. Giordano served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in France. For 25 years, he worked as an operating engineer for Terracomo and Co. in Brooklyn. Among other projects he worked on while with the company was the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Mr. Giordano retired around 1984. He and his late wife, Anna, were members of the Mount Loretto Friendship Club. They enjoyed taking trips with the club and visited the Bahamas, among other places. Mr. Giordano also enjoyed playing cards. "My father was a very good person. As long as he had good food, good company and a deck of cards, he was content," said his daughter, Carol Palermo. Mr. Giordano enjoyed watching his daughter work in her garden as well as eating the fresh, ripe tomatoes she grew. He also liked to celebrate holidays with his family, spend time with his five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren and have visits with his son every weekend. A parishioner of Our Lady of Peace R.C. Church, Brooklyn, he had served as an usher for Sunday masses and had helped plan the church's dances. Mr. Giordano's wife of 60 years, the former Anna De Vito, died in 2001. In addition to his daughter, Carol; five grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren, surviving is his son, Carmine. HENRI van STOLK, 82 Native of Holland was president of trading firm Wednesday, October 05, 2005 Henri C.A. van Stolk, 82, a former grain broker and trader, died Sunday at his Dongan Hills home, after a long illness. Born in Rotterdam, Holland, he came to Dongan Hills with his family in the 1930s. He moved to Westerleigh in 1953, but returned to Dongan Hills in the late 1960s. Mr. van Stolk earned a bachelor's degree from Williams College, Williamstown, Mass. He served in the Royal Dutch Navy on a British Navy aircraft carrier during World War II. In the mid-1940s, Mr. van Stolk began working for the family business -- the grain broker and trading firm Van Stolk Co. -- later becoming president. At the time of his retirement in 2002, he was also president of Kanvo Trading and Tulip Forest Farm. Mr. van Stolk was a commodities arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association and would frequently comment to the media on stories relating to the grain industry. "He was an avid family man, a self-taught handyman and an animal lover," said his daughter, Marguerite Mingoia. "He was at his happiest building an ice skating rink, a paddle tennis court and working on the family farm in Maryland accompanied by his dog." In addition to his daughter, Marguerite, Mr. van Stolk is survived by his wife of 55 years, the former Marguerite Hefti; his two sons, Richard and David; his daughter, Betsy van Stolk; a brother, Adriaan Pieter, and two grandchildren. There will be a memorial service on Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Paul's Memorial Episcopal Church, Stapleton. FRANK CORDELLO, 90 Brooklyn Navy Yard welder loved family, baseball Wednesday, October 05, 2005 Frank Cordello of Annadale, a retired welder, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. He was 90. Born in Brooklyn, he settled in Annadale in 1969. For more than 30 years, Mr. Cordello was employed as a welder at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. He retired in 1977 at the age of 62. Mr. Cordello loved baseball, his family and the New York Mets. He was an old Brooklyn Dodgers fan, then became a Mets fan, said his son, Frank. In addition to his son, Frank, Mr. Cordello is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Eve Horwath; his sons, Anthony and John; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. The funeral was scheduled for today from the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp. ANN BATTISTA, 75 A&W waitress enjoyed time with 4 grandchildren Wednesday, October 05, 2005 Ann Battista, 75, of Mariners Harbor, a retired waitress, died yesterday in Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners, where she had been a patient for a month. Born Ann Auricchio in Brooklyn, she moved to Tompkinsville when she was 30 and settled in Mariners Harbor more than 25 years later. Mrs. Battista worked as a waitress at A&W, Dongan Hills, for 20 years. She retired in 1986. She enjoyed playing bingo and taking trips to Atlantic City, but she especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Battista's husband of 14 years, Joseph, died in 1996. Surviving are her two sons, Joseph and Robert; two brothers, Nello and Ricky Auricchio; a sister, Marie Salvermini, and four grand-children. The funeral will be Friday from the Stradford Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's R.C. Church, New Brighton. The arrangements include cremation.
