MARGARET KIRBY, 100 Native of Ireland was a homemaker Monday, October 10, 2005 Margaret A. Kirby, 100, a native of Dublin, Ireland, and a homemaker, died Saturday in the New Vanderbilt Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clifton. Mrs. Kirby moved to Manhattan in 1954. While living there, she worked as a domestic helper for the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, the city's oldest Episcopalian seminary. In 1970, she relocated to Dongan Hills, living with her daughter, Trudy Jelen. She had been a resident at the New Vanderbilt since March 2004. Mrs. Kirby enjoyed traveling, reading and cooking. Her family loved her chocolate chip cookies because "they were not like the cookies many people make today -- they were made from scratch," said her daughter, Trudy. Mrs. Kirby was a parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills. In addition to her daughter, Trudy, surviving Mrs. Kirby are her two daughters, Phyllis King and Colette Manashowitz; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton. JOHN MURPHY, 86 Retired firefighter was known for his hospitality Monday, October 10, 2005 John F. Murphy, 86, of South Beach, a retired firefighter known for his hospitality and handiness, died Saturday in Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville, where he had been a resident for one month. A Brooklyn native, he moved to Arrochar in the 1960s and to South Beach in 1975. Mr. Murphy attended Manual Training High School in Brooklyn, and served in the Navy during World War II. After returning from the service, he embarked on a 32-year career with the FDNY. He was stationed at Engine Co. 243 in the Bensonhurt section of Brooklyn. "He loved it, it was his passion," said his son, Timothy. "He loved the camaraderie and the security it provided for his family. For him it was the ultimate job." He retired in the early 1980s, but stayed in close contact with his comrades. Mr. Murphy enjoyed fishing off the shores of Tottenville and tending to his garden, where he grew tomatoes. A devoted grandfather and dedicated family man, he was given the Super Fan award from Wagner College, Grymes Hill. He never missed a single game for either of his two sons, who played hockey at the school. He was also known for his ability to repair just about anything. "He always said, 'I can fix anything but a broken heart'," said his son. "It was true. He really could fix anything." And for friends and family, his home -- and refrigerator -- were always open. That kindness was repaid by his sister, Anna Timmons, who cared for him in his later years. Mr. Murphy was a parishioner of Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach. His wife, the former Agnes Valcich, died in 2003 after more than 60 years of marriage. In addition to his son, Timothy, and sister, Anna, surviving are three more sons, John, William and Gerard; his brother, James, and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday from the A. Azzara Funeral Home, South Beach, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
