WARREN RANDALL, 84 Gypsum company worker enjoyed the outdoors Tuesday, October 11, 2005 Warren (Red) H. Randall Sr. of West Brighton died Sunday at St. Vincent's Hospital in West Brighton after a long battle with an asbestos-related illness. He was 84. Born in Haines City, Fla., Mr. Randall moved to Staten Island as a boy and lived in both Stapleton and Fort Wadsworth before moving to West Brighton in 1948. Mr. Randall attended McKee High School in St. George before leaving at the age of 18 to join the Civilian Conservation Corps, in which he fought fires, performed forestry cleanup and learned to love camping and hiking, his family said. As a Boy Scout troop leader, Mr. Randall and members of Sacred Heart Troop 74 walked 50 miles of the Appalachian Trail in 1960. In 1943, Mr. Randall enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he was a small-boat operator stationed in Pearl Harbor until 1947. After that, he went to work for U.S. Gypsum Company, first in New Brighton and then in Port Reading, N.J., until 1984, when he retired. At age 67, Mr. Randall earned his GED. "He was a hard worker, good provider and good role model," said his son Jack Randall. "He was a loving grandfather, great-grandfather and father-in-law." Mr. Randall enjoyed crossword puzzles and taking long walks, often to Walker Park, where he would watch the athletes in action. He was a member of the West Brighton Senior Center, Bayley Seton AARP and won 12 medals in various competitions, including boccie, table tennis and shuffleboard, in the Staten Island Senior Olympics during the past 10 years. Besides his son Jack, Mr. Randall is survived by his wife of 63 years, the former Kathryn Murphy; his sons Warren (Bud) H. Jr., Frank and Steven; a daughter, Kathryn Milito; a brother, Frank Randall; six grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday, with a service at 11 a.m. in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. Cremation will be private. THOMAS AZZARA, 66 Firefighter's hobbies included fishing, crabbing Tuesday, October 11, 2005 He was born in New Dorp and settled in Great Kills in 1980. After graduating from New Dorp High School, Mr. Azzara served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman third class for four years, stationed aboard the USS Canberra. After the service, he continued his studies and graduated from the College of Staten Island, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business. After college, Mr. Azzara started his career with the New York City Fire Department. He was first stationed at Engine Co. 318 in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. He later transferred to Engine Co. 151 in Tottenville, retiring in 1998. According to his family, Mr. Azzara's hobbies included fishing, crabbing, taking part in football pools, and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. "He was a loving father and grandfather who will be truly missed," said Mr. Azzara's daughter, Jeanine Patinella. He was a parishioner of St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills. In addition to his daughter, Jeanine, surviving are his wife of 12 years, the former Lillian Esposito; his brother, Robert, and six grandchildren. MARY SANTERO, 95 Former seamstress, homemaker Tuesday, October 11, 2005 Mary P. Santero, 95, of Spring Hills, Fla., a homemaker and former seamstress, died Saturday at home under hospice care. Born Mary Pistilli in Vinchiaturo, Italy, Mrs. Santero moved to New Brighton as a youngster around 1919. As a young woman, she worked as a seamstress in Manhattan's Garment District for several years. It was in New Brighton that she met and married Italian native Joseph (Pepe) Santero. The couple founded the New Brighton-based Isle Fuel Oil Co. in the 1940s. A decade later, the family sold the company and Mr. Santero went into the construction business, building houses throughout Staten Island. Several years later, the couple moved to a horse farm in New Jersey, where they resided briefly, training and raising trotters. They relocated to St. Petersburg, Fla., in the early 1960s. Mr. Santero died in 1987. The following year, Mrs. Santero and members of her family went on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, Yugoslavia (now Bosnia-Herzegovina) , to visit a shrine erected after the first reported apparition of the Virgin Mary there in 1981. "She was a very religious person," said her nephew, Salvatore Barone, who welcomed his aunt into his Spring Hills home several years ago. "She lived a good, long life. And I was happy to be able to take care of her the last few years." A former parishioner of Assumption R.C. Church, New Brighton, Mrs. Santero enjoyed sewing and cooking. Burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Clearwater, Fla. MARY O'LOUGHLIN, 92 Telephone company investigator Tuesday, October 11, 2005 Mary J. O'Loughlin of Westerleigh, a former central ticket investigator for the former New York Telephone Co., died yesterday in Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners, where she had been living since August. She was 92. Born in Manhattan, the former Mary J. Gregory began working at age 15 for the New York Telephone Co. in that borough. She retired in 1960 after 32 years. She then went to work as a clerk for Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. in Manhattan, for six years. She moved to Brooklyn for a period of time before coming to Staten Island in 1968. She lived in Prince's Bay and Castleton Corners before settling in Westerleigh in 1988. Mrs. O'Loughlin joined the Deborah League of Staten Island as a life member in 1976 and held various positions on the board for more than 25 years. She chaired Deborah's 23rd annual fashion show in 1988 and worked at bingo on a regular basis. She received many awards for her efforts, including the Worker's Award (1985), the Certificate of Merit (1987) and the Above and Beyond (1988). In 2003, she experienced firsthand the Deborah Hospital in Browns Mills, N.J., when she became ill and her local doctors could not help. She also served as past president of two groups -- as a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Giuseppe Mazzini Lodge, Sons of Italy. From the former group, she won the Pioneer of the Year Award in 1990, and from the latter she received the Senior Volunteer Award, for which she was congratulated by the late actor Tony Randall. "She is someone who was always there when she was needed," said her daughter Mary J. Brancazio. Mrs. O'Loughlin was a parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners. Her husband of 41 years, James, died in 1976. In addition to her daughter, Mary, surviving are her daughter Margaret A. Byrne; two sons, John J. and James P.; 16 grandchildren, and 27 great-grandchildren. LEONARD BERG, 75 NYPD officer, Fla. city councilman Tuesday, October 11, 2005 Native Staten Islander Leonard (Len) A. Berg Jr. of Crystal River, Fla., a retired New York City police officer and Florida business owner and city councilman, died Sept. 26 in Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center, Crystal River. He was 75. Mr. Berg lived in Westerleigh and Grymes Hill before settling in Crystal River in 1971. From 1947 to 1949, he was a private first class in the U.S. Army, serving as a paratrooper stationed at Fort Bragg, N.C. For 17 years, Mr. Berg was a New York City police officer, working in Manhattan and for the former motorcycle precinct 2 in New Dorp, now the 122nd Precinct. He retired from the Island precinct in 1971. Mr. Berg owned and operated several convenience stores in Florida, which he sold, and at the time of his death owned, operated and managed commercial buildings that were rented out as office space. For two terms, he served as a city councilman of Crystal River. In Florida, Mr. Berg was a past president of the Crystal River Rotary Club, where he received the Paul Harris Fellow award, and was a past member of the Inglis Masonic Lodge, where he was a 32nd degree mason. He was also a member of the Low 12 Club, the Jacksonville Shrine Temple, Citrus County 10-13 Club of America for retired police officers and the Inverness Elks Lodge. Mr. Berg also founded the Kings Bay Association, which helps improve the water conditions of Crystal River. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating. Surviving are Mr. Berg's wife of 52 years, the former Barbara A. Webb; his son, Leonard III; his two daughters, Laurie Berg Lake and Kathleen Berg Dembosky; a brother, Bradford; a stepbrother, Reynold Missall; a stepsister, Doris Skeen, and 16 grandchildren. JOSEPHINE GIORDANO, 88 Seamstress enjoyed cooking for Christmas Tuesday, October 11, 2005 Josephine Giordano, 88, of Grasmere, a retired seamstress, died yesterday in the Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Dongan Hills, where she had been a patient for three months. Born Josephine Sansone in Manhattan, Mrs. Giordano graduated from the Julia Richman High School in that borough. She moved to South Beach in the early 1970s and settled in Grasmere three years ago. For 30 years, Mrs. Giordano was a seamstress in Manhattan's Garment District. She retired in 1979. She was a member of the Arrochar Senior Citizen Center and the Exceptional Children's Social Club. Mrs. Giordano loved to cook, especially for the Christmas holidays. She was a parishioner of Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach. Her husband, Carl, died in 1994. Surviving Mrs. Giordano is her sister, Lillian Gatto. The funeral will be tomorrow from the A. Azzara Funeral Home, South Beach, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Rosary Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. HELEN MANGO, 86 Cook, dietitian at Port Richmond High School Tuesday, October 11, 2005 Born Helen Violet Brusco in Rosebank, she married Frank J. Mango in 1942 in City Hall, Manhattan, while he was on leave from the U.S. Army. After marriage, the couple moved to Olympia, Wash., and in 1943, they solemnized their marriage in a chapel in Fort Lewis, Wash. Mrs. Mango worked in the food department of St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma, Wash., while her husband was in the Army. When his service ended, they settled in Port Richmond. Prior to marriage, Mrs. Mango worked for the former Greeners Artificial Flower Co. in Rosebank; the former Stapleton Service Laundry, West Brighton, and the former Unexcelled Manufacturing Co., Graniteville. After marriage, she left the workforce for many years to rear her three children. Mrs. Mango returned to work in 1960 as a head cook and dietitian at Port Richmond High School, where she was known as "Cookie" by the students. Upon her retirement in 1982, she was awarded a Regents diploma from the state. As a young girl, Mrs. Mango enjoyed dancing and performed several times at the Shubert Theatre in Manhattan. In her later years, she enjoyed preparing gourmet meals, which were known to family and friends as "Frank and Helen's Hot and Cold Cuisine." An avid swimmer, she frequented the pool at the North Shore YMCA in West Brighton. She was also a member of the St. Adalbert R.C. Church's Altar Society, as well as the Elm Park church's variety show troupe and the Westerleigh Chapter of the AARP. Mrs. Mango enjoyed music, television and praying the rosary. According to her family, she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. "My mother was the most nurturing, loving and generous woman to her husband, family and her many friends. She showered us with her affection and her food. She will be missed by many," said her daughter Loretta Drogon. Mrs. Mango was a parishioner of St. Roch's R.C. Church, Port Richmond, where she and her husband renewed their vows on their 60th wedding anniversary in 2003. In addition to her husband, Frank J., and her daughter Loretta, surviving are her son, Dr. Philip Mango; her daughter Angela Leibold; three brothers, John, Albert and Fiore; a sister, Edith Veach; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Roch's Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. CHARLES TANTILLO, 78 Sales manager, VP of Babe Ruth League Tuesday, October 11, 2005 Charles Tantillo, 78, of Brick Township, N.J., a former Staten Island resident and a retired sales manager, died Sunday at home. Born in Richmond, Mr. Tantillo to moved to Dongan Hills in the 1960s before relocating to Brick Township six years ago. Mr. Tantillo worked for 15 years as a sales manager for the former Narrows Ford in Grasmere, retiring in 1986. Prior to that, he worked for 20 years as a mechanic, working out of different auto shops on the Island. A graduate of New Dorp High School, Mr. Tantillo was a parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Tantillo was vice commander of the Kells-Grennie Post, American Legion, in New Dorp from 1970 to 1973. He also served as the former vice president of the Staten Island Babe Ruth League. Mr. Tantillo enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He also loved to travel throughout the United States, especially spending time in Florida. His wife of 40 years, the former Lucille Maglione, died in 1988. He is survived by two sons, Chuck and Michael; three daughters, Deborah McCrum, Janice Phelps and Claudia Peduto; two brothers, Joseph and Vincent; a sister, Virginia Tobin, and 11 grandchildren. He is also survived by a longtime companion, Marie Kisch. The funeral will be Thursday from the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Church. BARBARA STUHL, 72 Nurse called children her 'five gems' Tuesday, October 11, 2005 Barbara Stuhl, 72, of Richmond, a retired nurse, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. Mrs. Stuhl worked as a registered nurse for 48 years in various hospitals on Staten Island and in Florida until her retirement in 1995. According to her family, her greatest love in life after her five children -- whom she referred to as her "five gems" -- was music. In her leisure time, she played piano in public, including at a lounge in Great Kills. "She always had the philosophy of 'Do unto others ...'" said her daughter Barbara Lynn Barger. "She was the matriarch of our family. She always thought it was important for us kids to be as close as we are." Born in Alberta, Canada, the former Barbara Houseman moved to Huguenot at the age of 2, and then to Annadale where she reared her family. She had graduated from Tottenville High School before going to nursing school in Brooklyn. In 1983, she relocated to St. Petersburg, Fla., and in 1991 she moved to Eltingville. She recently settled in Richmond. Her former husband of 24 years, Warren, died in 1998. Her son William Albert died in 2002. In addition to her daughter Barbara, surviving are her daughter Kim Ann Wanner; her sons Warren Scott and Lawrence Robert; a sister, Carol Ann Delnero, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Eltingville. The Rev. Garry Squire, pastor of Messiah Lutheran Church, Annadale, will officiate. Arrangements include a private cremation.
