VIOLET GENNARO, 79 Mother of 7 once owned deli in her native Rosebank Wednesday, October 12, 2005 Native Staten Islander Violet Gennaro, 79, of South Daytona, Fla., a homemaker and the former owner of an Islanddelicatessen, died Sunday in Hospice Care Center, Port Orange, Fla. Born Violet DiStefano in Rosebank, she graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1944. That same year, she and Lawrence J. Gennaro were married, and the couple reared their seven children in her native community. Mrs. Gennaro enjoyed the stock car races held at the former Weissglass Stadium in Port Richmond during the 1960s. In 1976, she purchased and managed the former Gennaro's Deli at the corner of Hylan Boulevard and Bay Street in Rosebank, for about two years. Her specialty was Italian cooking, including the family favorite -- her weekly sauce and meatballs. She also made her own prosciutto. Mrs. Gennaro relocated to South Daytona in 1995. She loved to attend special family events, such as birthday and wedding celebrations. She also enjoyed planning picnics for her family at Von Briesen and Silver Lake parks on Staten Island. She liked to go boating and cruising -- a cruise to the Bahamas was her particular favorite. She was also a "bingo nut," said her son, Joseph L. Mrs. Gennaro was a parishioner of St. Mary's R.C. Church, Rosebank, and later Holy Rosary R.C. Church, South Beach, Fla. Her husband of 28 years, Lawrence, died in 1972. In addition to her son, Joseph L., surviving are her son, Alfred H.; her three daughters, Theresa Atkinson, Harriet Gennaro and Deborah Spampanato; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gennaro's son, Lawrence Jr., died in 1992. Her daughter, Virginia Juliano, died in 1995. ROSE CITINO, 96 Passed down Italian cooking skills to her daughter Wednesday, October 12, 2005 Rose Citino, 96, a former Staten Islander and retired dressmaker, died yesterday in Shore Rock Garden Care Center, Brick, N.J., where she had resided for five years. Born Rose Solimando in Manhattan, she was brought to Italy as an infant. She returned to Manhattan at the age of 16 and later moved to Brooklyn. Mrs. Citino moved to her daughter's home in Castleton Corners in 1998 and then entered the New Jersey care center. After graduating from high school in Brooklyn, she worked in that borough as a dressmaker. She retired in 1974. Mrs. Citino enjoyed cooking Italian cuisine and passed her skills to her daughter. She sewed clothing for her children and grandchildren, and loved to spend time with her family. Her grandchildren will have happy memories of spending time with her, said Mrs. Citino's daughter, Loretta Tripoli, who described her mother as a strong-willed, good person. Mrs. Citino had enjoyed going dancing with her husband of 66 years, Ralph, who died in 2000. While living on Staten Island, Mrs. Citino was a parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners. She had been a member of senior citizens groups in Brooklyn. In addition to her daughter, Loretta, surviving are her two sons, Frank and Joseph; a brother, Joseph Solimando; a sister, Angie Bressi; four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Citino's grandson, Ralph Citino, died Sept. 28. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 11 a.m. in St. Teresa's Church. OLGA SEMLEY, 95 Matriarch loved to cook, spend time with her family Wednesday, October 12, 2005 Olga Semley, 95, of Clifton, a retired housekeeper who had been a nurse's aide and executive director of a boarding house, died Saturday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, three weeks short of her 96th birthday. Born Olga Scott in Norfolk, Va., she moved to Englewood, Early 1980s N.J., in the 1930s and to Schenectady, N.Y., in the 1960s. Mrs. Semley moved to Clifton in the early 1980s. She relocated to Queens in the early 1990s, but due to illness, entered New Vanderbilt Rehabilitation and Care Center, Clifton, in 2001. Mrs. Semley worked for 30 years as a residential housekeeper in various homes throughout New Jersey, Brooklyn and Queens. For two years, she worked in the city as a token booth clerk for the Metropolitan Transit Authority. For a year, Mrs. Semley worked as a nurse's aide in a mental health facility upstate. She then worked for close to eight years as an executive director at a family-owned boarding house -- the former Jones Boarding Home in Schenectady -- before retiring in the early 1970s. While living in Queens, Mrs. Semley was a member of Southern Baptist Church in Astoria. She enjoyed watching classic Westerns and loved to play cards, including the game bid whist. Mrs. Semley also loved to cook and spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. "No task was too big. She traveled near and far and was a veritable matriarch. She taught us stories about back in the day when her mother was raising her. We all looked up to her. She will be dearly missed. She was our Queen Bee and in her memory we will carry on," said her granddaughter, Cydni Massey. "I loved her dearly and I will miss her dearly and I hope I will be able to be the woman that she was to my grandchildren." Mrs. Semley's husband of nearly 40 years, Joseph, died in 1962. In addition to her granddaughter, surviving are her son, Arnold; 22 more grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren, and 40 great-great grandchildren. Mrs. Semley's son, Thomas, died in 1965 and her son, Joseph, died in 1975. She also was preceded in death by her four daughters: Jean Cuttleback in 1994, Margaret Jordan in 1982, Anna Laura Semley in 1994 and Alois Green in 1983. Her grandson, Ronald Semley, died in 2002. The funeral service will be Friday at 10 a.m. in the Stradford Funeral Home, Tompkinsville. Burial will be in Long Island National Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I. MARGARET NOLAND, 77 Chase Bank manager liked to watch baseball games Wednesday, October 12, 2005 Margaret Mary Noland, 77, of Ocala, Fla., a native Staten Islander and retired mortgage manager, died yesterday in Munroe Regional Medical Center, Ocala. Born Margaret Mary Dicks in New Brighton, she lived in several communities, including Dongan Hills and West Brighton, before her marriage to Arthur J. Noland in 1946. The couple lived first in Rosebank, then in West Brighton for several years. They also lived in Mariners Harbor for several more years, before relocating to Linden, N.J. and Tuckerton, N.J. They settled in Ocala 17 years ago. Mrs. Noland worked as a mortgage manager for 17 years at Chase Bank, first in Manhattan, and later when the company moved to Montvale, N.J. She then worked for about five years at Ocean City (N.J.) Home Savings Bank before retiring in the early 1990s. While living on Staten Island, Mrs. Noland attended Port Richmond High School and was a past president of the Assumption Council Columbiettes. She and her husband enjoyed watching baseball games at the former Polo Grounds in Manhattan and the former Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, as well as Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Mr. Noland affectionately referred to her as the Bingo Kid, after her other hobby. Mrs. Noland was a parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary R.C. Church, Ocala. In addition to her husband of 57 years, Arthur, surviving are her two sons, Richard R. and Arthur J. Jr.; her two daughters, Margaret E. Wroclawski and Mary B. JOAN FERRANTE, 66 Liked to travel, found 'humor in almost everything' Wednesday, October 12, 2005 Joan E. Ferrante of Tottenville, an easygoing woman who made her family laugh during tough times and relished dining out and traveling with her husband, lost her battle with cancer yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. She was 66. She was always laughing. 1990 She found the humor in almost everything. She was always up, said her husband, John. It helped to get through some tough times. Born Joan E. Mandelkow in Red Hook, Brooklyn, she reared two sons, took care of her beloved dog Nellie, and always made sure dinner was on the table in their Tottenville home, her husband said. The couple, who exchanged vows during a snowstorm in February 1961, was planning to leave yesterday for a trip to Lucera, Italy, the husband said. We were going to leave [yesterday]. We had planned to see my parents' hometown, he said. Throughout their travels, Mrs. Ferrante fell in love with Ireland's plush countryside, her husband added. The couple frequented locales throughout Staten Island as well, visiting Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Livingston, seeing shows at the borough's colleges and eating in Rocky Toto's Italian Restaurant in Tottenville, where most of the wait staff recognized them, Mr. Ferrante said. His wife made friends easily, he added. She was petite, bubbly, blonde, and she really was very gregarious, he said. She was a big talker. She would strike up conversations with strangers. Mrs. Ferrante graduated in 1956 from Brooklyn's Manual Training High School, which has since changed names, her husband said. After the couple married, they briefly lived in Queens before settling in Tottenville in 1966. In addition to her husband, John, Mrs. Ferrante is survived by her two sons, Robert and Joseph; two brothers, Robert and Arthur Mandelkow, and two grandchildren. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. FRANCES FINLEY, 89 Loved reading, cooking Wednesday, October 12, 2005 Former Staten Islander Frances M. Finley, 89, of Toms River, N.J., a retired clerk, died Monday in Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, N.J. Born in Manhattan, the former Frances M. Repetti was brought to Concord as a child and moved to Dongan Hills in 1950. She relocated to Whiting, N.J., in 1977, returned to Dongan Hills in 1979 and moved to Toms River in 2000. From 1960 to 1965, Mrs. Finley worked as a milliner in Manhattan and then as a clerk for Mercury Dry Cleaners, in both Stapleton and Dongan Hills. An avid reader, Mrs. Finley also enjoyed cooking healthy food, square dancing and traveling to Italy and Ireland. She also learned to use the computer at the age of 86 and enjoyed sending e-mails to her granddaughter. Mrs. Finley was a parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills. Her husband of 37 years, John M., died in 1978. Surviving are her son, John V.; her daughter, Janice Leopardi; six grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. ANTHONY CARLUCCI, 95 Prince's Bay resident owned elevator company Wednesday, October 12, 2005 Anthony J. Carlucci of Prince's Bay, a former elevator company owner, died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. He was 95. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Carlucci moved to Brooklyn 1998 at the age of 16, around the time he graduated from high school. That year, in 1926, he became a runner for McGlynn Hays and Co., an elevator repair and modernization company in Manhattan. Mr. Carlucci went on to become owner of the business in 1960, and moved to Great Kills the following year. Although he curtailed his involvement with the company around 1997, he remained active as a consultant while handing the company over to his son, Gerard. He moved to Prince's Bay several months ago. "He loved spending time with his four grandchildren, Christopher and Joseph Sullivan and Anthony and Michele Carlucci," said his daughter, Barbara Sullivan. Mr. Carlucci was an accomplished dancer who also played the harmonica and sang a bit, his family said. He was very devoted to his business. He was a parishioner of St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood. In addition to his son, Gerard; his daughter, Barbara, and his four grandchildren, surviving Mr. Carlucci are his wife of 57 years, the former Marie Scarpa; a brother, Frank, and a sister, Katie DiCristofalo. His son, Anthony J., died in the Vietnam War in 1969. The funeral will be Friday from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:15 a.m. in St. Charles Church. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
