Christoffersen, a native of Norway who maintained a strong ethnic identity and passed along her favorite recipes, bits of her native tongue and stories about living through World War II to her two daughters, died suddenly Monday in her Frankford, N.J., home. The former Tottenville resident was 80 years old. Born Esther Tjostolfsen in the town of Tromoy in 1925, she was left without parents at a young age, when her father died and her mother, Magdalena, moved to the United States to find work. Her aunt, Ruth Andersen, reared her and brought her to boarding school in Onsrud, where Mrs. Andersen worked as headmistress. Mrs. Christoffersen resided there during the war, said her daughter Ruth Hirschauer. Mrs. Christoffersen would mix upbeat stories about skiing to school with stories about shortages of meat and fruit during the war, her daughter added. "To this day, she wouldn't eat lentils because she ate so many during the war," Mrs. Hirschauer said. Mrs. Christoffersen moved to Brooklyn when she was 21 to reunite with her mother and work as an au pair in New Jersey, her daughter said. Mrs. Christoffersen's unsettled life in Norway instilled a fierce longing for a tight-knit family -- a wish she fulfilled when she married Tore Christofferson in 1949 and bore two daughters. "She really didn't have a family in Norway because she was in boarding school. When she married my father and had two kids, she was in heaven," her daughter said. The family moved to Tottenville in 1959, where Mrs. Christoffersen indulged her domestic instincts. And she added a Norwegian flair into her family's life, her daughter recalled. "She always had to have lutefiske every Christmas Day," she said, referring to halibut soaked in lye. "We were still making trips into Brooklyn because there was only one delicatessen that held the kinds of Norwegian food that she wanted." Mrs. Hirschauer said her mother's favorites included Norwegian pancakes; fiskekakke, or fish cakes, and medistepolse, or sausage. "She was very proud to be a U.S. citizen, but she always called Norway home. She was torn between the two countries," her daughter said. Mrs. Christoffersen, whom her daughter described as "independent, straightforward, with a twinkle," also worked part-time for custodial staff in Island public schools, attended services at Bethel United Methodist Church, Tottenville, and kept a garden in her leisure time. She moved to her daughter's home in Frankford last year. Mrs. Christoffersen's husband, Tore, died in 1996 In addition to her daughter, Ruth, surviving are a brother, Roy Steen; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Christoffersen's daughter, Mona Rogers, died in 1997. The funeral service is scheduled for today at 1:30 p.m. in the Wood Funeral Home, Branchville, N.J. Her ashes will be interred in Bethel Cemetery, Tottenville. ANN CURCIO, 89 Made christening shawls for all of her grandchildren Thursday, October 13, 2005 Ann Curcio, 89, a homemaker and former salesclerk, died yesterday at her home in Great Kills. The former Ann Abatemarco married Neal Curcio, whom she met at a friend's engagement party, in her native Brooklyn. Mrs. Curcio worked as a salesclerk at the former Abraham & Straus department store in Brooklyn for about 25 years before she moved to Great Kills in 1976. While living on Staten Island, she dedicated her time to caring for her home and family. She loved to knit and crochet, and made sweaters, afghans and christening shawls for all her grandchildren. Famed for her Sunday dinners, Mrs. Curcio also enjoyed cooking all kinds of Italian dishes. Her baked specialties included honeyballs, breads, pumpkin pie and grain pies at Easter. Mrs. Curcio was a parishioner of St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills, and was a member of its Varsity Club. She was also a member of the Great Kills Friendship Club. She was a huge and beloved part of our lives for so long, said her daughter-in-law, Patricia Curcio. She was loving but firm. Mrs. Curcio's husband of 38 years, Neal, died in 1983. Surviving are her son, Neal Jr.; her daughter, Lucille Stach; five grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. The funeral will be Saturday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with a mass at 11 a.m. in St. Clare's Church. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. ALBERT BOIVIN, 58 Real estate developer enjoyed taking nature pictures Thursday, October 13, 2005 Albert Jeffrey Boivin, 58, of Manhattan, a native Staten Islander and real estate developer, died Tuesday in Beth Israel Medical Center, Manhattan. Born and reared in New Dorp, Mr. Boivin moved to Manhattan five years ago. As a child, Mr. Boivin's happiest memories were of spending summers with his family at the Cedar Grove Beach Club in New Dorp. A graduate of Valley Forge Military Academy, Wayne, Pa., he earned a degree in economics from Wagner College, Grymes Hill, in 1969. While studying at Wagner, he developed an interest in real estate, which fueled his desire to begin a career in real estate development. For more than 30 years, Mr. Boivin worked independently with several Manhattan firms. He enjoyed photography, and his children were his favorite subjects. Mr. Boivin also captured nature scenes in Manhattan and the parks of Staten Island. A collector of antiques, he often would find items while browsing shops on Staten Island and in Manhattan.
