THERESA HARRIS, 48 Collection agent loved to travel Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Theresa Harris of New Brighton, a former collection agent, died yesterday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. She was 48. Born Theresa Costanzo in Brooklyn, she moved to Stapleton in 1962 and graduated from Curtis High School. She moved to New Springville before settling in New Brighton in the early 1990s. Mrs. Harris worked as a collection agent at AT&T in Morristown, N.J., for 27 years, retiring in 2004. Since then she continued to work part-time as a cashier at Home Depot in Concord. According to her family, Mrs. Harris loved traveling with her companion of 31 years -- eight of those years as her husband -- David. Her favorite destination was Las Vegas. "She was just a loving wife, mother, aunt and sister," said one of her 33 nieces and 30 nephews, Sunny Newsome. "She was the rock of the family -- she held everyone together. We love her and we'll miss her." She was a member of the Cromwell Center gym and a parishioner of St. Peter's R.C. Church, West Brighton. In addition to her husband, nieces and nephews, surviving are a daughter, Natalie Harris; three brothers, Joseph, Domenick and John, and seven sisters, Rose Ann, Donna, Joann and Camille Costanzo, Catherine Guadagno, Antoinette Newsome and Carmella Shearin. The funeral will be Thursday from the Stradford Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Peter's Church. Burial will follow in Silver Mount Cemetery, Silver Lake. MARGARET O'REILLY, 85 Closely followed college teams Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Margaret M. O'Reilly, 85, of Midlothian, Va., a former Staten Islander and homemaker, died Friday in her home. She was born Margaret M. Quaranta in West Brighton. She left the Island after marrying but returned annually for visits with family and friends. Mrs. O'Reilly and her husband moved around the country before settling in Midlothian in 2003. She graduated from Notre Dame Academy, Grymes Hill. Ever after, she spent her time as a dedicated homemaker and mother. Mrs. O'Reilly enjoyed making trips to Atlantic City with her sisters, cooking and spending time with family. She was also an avid follower of college athletics, especially basketball and football. Her favorite teams to watch were the Duke Blue Devils and the North Carolina State Wolfpack. She was a fighter, said her son, Arthur M. O'Reilly Sr. She enjoyed living life to the fullest. Her husband of 36 years, Joseph P. O'Reilly Jr., died in 1978. In addition to her son, Arthur, survivors include her daughter, Margaret E. O' Reilly; three sisters, Lillian Moran, Grace Nutt, and Marilyn Mullaney; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. LARRY IPPOLITI, 74 Electrician had many seafaring adventures Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Larry Ippoliti, 74, of Toms River, N.J., a retired electrician and former Staten Islander, died on Friday at Community Medical Center of Toms River. Born in Scranton, Pa., Mr. Ippoliti was brought by his family to Brooklyn as a boy. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1949, serving as an electrician's mate, third class, on the submarine USS Sirago SS485. He was discharged in 1953, and in that same year, Mr. Ippoliti married his high school sweetheart, the former Maureen Schleidt. The couple settled in Port Richmond, where they bought their first home in 1961. By the time they relocated to Staten Island, Mr. Ippoliti had started working as an electrician, installing telephone wires in Manhattan for the former New York Telephone Co. He retired in 1988 after a 30-year career. In 1990, he and his wife moved to Holiday Heights, a retirement community in Toms River. Mr. Ippoliti savored his new, more relaxed lifestyle. He spent hours at the clubhouse playing pool and poker with friends, and he joined the Holiday Heights softball league. The coastal location was perfect for him as well, said his daughter, Donna Brady. Drawn to the ocean, he took his motorboat out for frequent spins, and he cooked up vats of homemade sauce with freshly caught crab. His seafaring adventures hardly stopped there. Joined by two couples who were their frequent travel companions, Mr. Ippoliti and his wife toured the world, often by boat. They took cruises to places like Hawaii, Alaska and Europe. Mr. Ippoliti belonged to the Submarine Veterans of New Jersey South. While on Staten Island, he was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton. "He did everything for everybody," said Mrs. Brady. She recalled that just last week, he had helped a neighbor fix her heating. Mrs. Brady added, "He was a great husband and the best dad that I could ever have." In addition to Mrs. Brady, surviving are Mr. Ippoliti's wife, Maureen; his sons Robert and Frank; brother, John Visintini, sisters Irene Angeladakis and Candita Deschino, and six grandchildren. JOSEPH VALITUTTO, 89 Railroad worker, accomplished golfer Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Lifelong Staten Islander Joseph (Chippy) Valitutto, 89, of New Brighton, a retired railroad worker, died Saturday in the Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners, where he resided for two months. Born in Dongan Hills, Mr. Valitutto was known as Chippy since he was a boy because he was always running around and climbing trees like a chipmunk, according to family. He attended PS 11, Dongan Hills, and Curtis High School. For 35 years, Mr. Valitutto worked for the B&O Railroad Co., which previously owned the railroad system on the Island. He started out working as a deckhand on tugboats in Jersey City and, in 1952, came to the company's St. George location, where he worked various jobs, including watchman. Mr. Valitutto retired at age 60. In the 1950s and 1960s, he also owned the former Chippy's Pool Room in Dongan Hills, where many young Islanders learned to play billiards. Mr. Valitutto settled in the Cassidy-Lafayette Houses, New Brighton, in 1988. In his youth, Mr. Valitutto enjoyed playing baseball on various Island teams. Described as a tremendous New York Yankees fan, he was also an accomplished golfer who could shoot par or better on any Island golf course, his family said. Mr. Valitutto was a member of the Cassidy Coles Senior Center, where he was dubbed the mayor of Cassidy Coles by the residents for his involvement. He was a parishioner of St. Ann's R.C. Church, Dongan Hills. Mr. Valittuto's wife of 45 years, the former Sophia Burhart, died in 1984. His son, George, died in 1952, and his son, Peter, died in 1969. Surviving are his three sons, Joseph, Charles and George; his daughter, Marie Valitutto; a brother, Dominick; a sister, Mary Grillo; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Richmond Funeral Home, Grant City. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere. JOSEPH POIDOMANI, 92 Spent decades working in city bakeries Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Joseph Poidomani, 92, of Rosebank, a retired baker who spent 55 years working in bakeries throughout New York City, including three of his very own, died Sunday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Born in Manhattan, Mr. Poidomani moved to Brooklyn in 1960 before settling in Rosebank in 1967. Mr. Poidomani worked for 55 years as a baker, including owning and operating his own bakeries in Brooklyn and Manhattan. After graduating from the former Stuart High School, Manhattan, Mr. Poidomani began working at various bakeries in that borough. During World War II, Mr. Poidomani worked as a civilian riveter for two years. After the war, Mr. Poidomani borrowed money from his father and opened his own bake shop, Cake Land, in Manhattan, where he worked for 18 and 19 hours days to get the shop off the ground. He was also owner of Josephine's Bake Shop in Brooklyn, which he named after his wife of 66 years, the former Josephine Scaduto. In the 1950's, Mr. Poidomani worked for 10 years at the former Ebinger's Bakery in Brooklyn. He then spent five years working at various bakeries on the Island, retiring in 1983. He was a master baker, said his son, Carl. He baked anything from the best Italian breads, pastries, pies, wedding cakes, doughnuts and even little cookies to Polish breads. He did it all by himself. From American cookies to exotic pastries, he made them all. According to family, after buying his home in Rosebank, Mr. Poidomani began gardening. He grew the best tomatoes you can imagine and gave things out to neighbors -- blueberries, tomatoes and vegetables -- so the whole neighborhood was enjoying the fruits of his garden. Mr. Poidomani was also an avid reader who enjoyed books on psychology. Ayn Rand was a favorite author. Along with his son, Carl, also surviving are his wife, Josephine; another son, Anthony; a daughter, Carol Poidomani; a brother, Vincent; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The service will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the A. Azzara Funeral Home, South Beach. A private cremation will follow. JOHN THOMPSON, 86 Laborer enjoyed boating Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Lifelong Bulls Head resident John E. Thompson Jr., 86, a retired laborer, died Sunday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Mr. Thompson worked for 30 years as a laborer for the former Dellavale Salvage Co., Bulls Head, retiring in 1981. An avid boater, Mr. Thompson especially enjoyed his time spent at Great Kills Marina. "He loved the outdoors and he also owned his own boats, keeping them in Great Kills Marina," said his niece, Barbara Thompson. Mr. Thompson's brother, Lawrence Thompson was well-known for performing country-and-Western songs on Staten Island and at clubs in New Jersey, according to family. "John would go all over and follow his brother wherever he went to sing," said Ms. Thompson. "He was a big fan of his brother." Mr. Thompson also enjoyed rollerskating and ice-skating, and tending his garden. He was also an avid New York sports fan who loved the Yankees, Mets, Giants and Jets. "He was a big New York rooter. We used to joke with him because he was on the fence all the time," she added. "He was a wonderful man. He was really good and I will miss him terribly," added Ms. Thompson. "Next to my father, he was my second father. ... He helped me with a lot of things," she said. In addition to his niece and brother, Lawrence, Mr. Thompson is survived by another brother, Charles. Baker flew planes, fixed TVs and collected all things cowboy Owner of Zinicola's Bakery in Port Richmond Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Lifelong Port Richmond resident George J. Zinicola Jr., 88, a retired bakery owner, died Sunday at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, after a week-long stay. The multi-talented Mr. Zinicola, who fixed electronics, collected cowboy paraphernalia, flew planes and had a hearty sense of humor, lived in the Port Richmond home of his childhood his entire life. He graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1936. He served as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Camp Blanding, Fla., from 1944 to 1945. From 1933 until he retired in 1984, Mr. Zinicola worked in the family-owned Zinicola's Bakery, a Port Richmond fixture since 1899. The business baked Italian breads for retail and delivery to schools and businesses. Ever-energetic, Mr. Zinicola often would return from his workday at the bakery to fix his neighbors' and customers' televisions, said his daughter, Beverly Zinicola. He built our first television set in 1947, she remembered. In addition to fixing electronics, Mr. Zinicola also enjoyed piloting propeller planes at the former Staten Island Airport, traveling to Atlantic City, spending time with his grandchildren and maintaining his collection of cowboy hats, pictures, clothing and other Western-style accouterments. You talk about one good person without a jealous or unfriendly bone in his body, said his daughter. He was just wonderful; he had a wonderful sense of humor and everybody loved him. Mr. Zinicola was a member of the North Shore AARP and the Elks Lodge in Greenridge. He was a parishioner of St. Roch's R.C. Church, Port Richmond. In addition to his daughter, Beverly, surviving are his wife of 65 years the former Doris Davis; daughters Diane Zinicola and Joan Collia; a sister, Rachel Riccardelli; one grandson, and two granddaughters. ANTHONY IZZO, 76 Utility dispatcher was active Knight Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Anthony D. Izzo, 76, of Westerleigh, a retired utility dispatcher, died Sunday in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Manhattan. Born and reared in Brooklyn, he settled in Westerleigh in 1970. Mr. Izzo worked as a dispatcher for Consolidated Edison for 43 years in Brooklyn. He retired in 1992. A lifetime member of the Assumption Council, Knights of Columbus, he was also a member of the Willowbrook chapter of the AARP. Through the AARP, he volunteered delivering clothes for Project Hospitality and enjoyed many bus trips along with his wife of 52 years, the former Therese Brienza. Mr. Izzo was a Mets fan who liked to spend time gardening and taking trips to Atlantic City. Most of all, he loved baby-sitting his grandchildren. Mr. Izzo served as a private first class in the U.S. Army, stationed in Austria during the Korean War. He was a parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh, where he was an usher. ALICE BUTTERMARK, 91 Transciptionist enjoyed writing poetry Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Native Staten Islander Alice M. Buttermark, 91, of South Plainfield, N.J., a retired transcriptionist and supervisor, died yesterday in the Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, Plainfield, N.J. Born Alice M. Gorman in West Brighton, she graduated from Port Richmond High School and the former Brandon-Stevens Business School, New Brighton. Mrs. Buttermark moved to South Plainfield in 1968 and to Holiday City, N.J., in 1984. After her husband of 47 years, Felix, died in 1986, she returned to South Plainfield. In 1991, Mrs. Buttermark settled into her daughter and son-in-law's home, also in South Plainfield. For many years, she worked as a Dictaphone transcriptionist for the city Welfare Department in its Staten Island office. Mrs. Buttermark then worked as a supervisor of the correspondence department for the Home Insurance Co. of New York City in Manhattan. She retired as a medical transcriptionist in the medical records department of Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in 1978. Mrs. Buttermark enjoyed writing poetry and her words touched the hearts of many of her relatives, according to family. She also enjoyed gardening, reading and working crossword puzzles. Mrs. Buttermark was a parishioner of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, South Plainfield. Surviving are, her daughter, Lois Garbarini; a brother, John Gorman, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday from the McCriskin Home For Funerals, South Plainfield, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains, N.J.
