JOSEPHINE BOUCHOUX, 91 Retired kindergarten teacher, enjoyed playing bridge Monday, October 24, 2005 Former Staten Islander Josephine M. Bouchoux, 91, a retired kindergarten teacher, died Saturday in Maryann Hale Pavilion Haven Hospice at the JFK Medical Center, Edison, N.J. Born Josephine M. LaPoint in New Brighton, she graduated from St. Peter's Girls High School. She relocated to Castleton Corners upon her marriage to Robert L. Bouchoux Jr. in 1935. The couple moved to Richmond in 1953. For 20 years, Mrs. Bouchoux taught kindergarten at St. Clare's School, Great Kills. She retired in 1972. In 1992 she moved to Rossmoor Adult Community in Monroe, N.J., and settled in Heritage at Clara Barton, an assisted living community, Edison, three years ago. During the 1970s and 1980s, Mrs. Bouchoux volunteered at Princeton Medical Center for nearly seven years maintaining flower arrangements in patients' rooms. An avid bridge player, she also enjoyed sewing, gardening and traveling. Throughout her life, Mrs. Bouchoux was a good friend to many people, according to her daughter, Elaine Susan Kimball. She also loved to spend time with her 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was a parishioner of the Church of the Nativity, Monroe. Her husband of 56 years, Robert L. Jr., died in 1991. In addition to her daughter, Elaine Susan, surviving Mrs. Bouchoux are two other daughters, Carol Ann Yost and Jean Marie Higgins; a son, Donald R.; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Flynn & Son Funeral Home, Metuchen, N.J., with a mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart R.C. Church, South Plainfield, N.J. Cremation will follow in Rosehill Crematory, Linden, N.J., and burial of ashes will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. HELEN SOMMO, 89 South Beach homemaker also made hats Monday, October 24, 2005 Helen Sommo, 89, of South Beach, a former hat maker, died Saturday at home. Born Helen Ferrara in Rosebank, she settled in South Beach in 1955. Mrs. Sommo was trained as a hat maker, fashioning ladies' hats which were sold at stores including Strawbridge's Clothier, a national chain. She then went on to work as a drafter in Bayonne, to support the war effort during World War II. She was a graduate of Curtis High School. Mrs. Sommo's life revolved around her family. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, and watching the Yankees. She also loved cooking and baking, specializing in Italian recipes from Naples and Salerno given to her by her mother. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Rosebank. Her husband of 28 years, Henry, died in 1971. Surviving are two sons, Peter and Henry Jr.; two daughters, Elizabeth and Gloria Sommo; two sisters, Emma and Sophie Ferrara; two granddaughters, and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Martin Hughes Funeral Home, Concord, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere.
