TIFFANY ROSADO, 17 Former Islander enjoyed music Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Former Staten Islander Tiffany Rose Rosado, 17, a former Hungerford School student who lived in Mariners Harbor, died at home in Old Bridge, N.J., where her family had moved three months ago. Born with cerebral palsy in Brooklyn, Tiffany also endured seizure disorders her entire life. But she led a life filled with music and joy thanks to her family. "She liked music and she had all kinds of musical toys, bells and rattles," said her mother, Jenise Rosado. "She was just a lovely baby." Tiffany listened to the hit-music radio station Z-100 and would dance by wiggling around in her chair or bed. Her family combined to care for Tiffany, who moved to Mariners Harbor as an infant, and attended the Hungerford School's New Dorp location before moving to Old Bridge. Tiffany never was in the care of anyone but her family, Mrs. Rosado said, and she was happy and smiled often. "She was always around her loved ones," Mrs. Rosado said. Besides her mother, surviving are her father, Edward Rosado; brothers Edward Jr. and Christopher Rosado; a sister, Alyssa Rosado, and grandparents Angelina Rosado and Widelmina Rivera. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Michael's R.C. Church, Mariners Harbor. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton. ROSE PELLICANO, 80 Seamstress sewed wedding dresses Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Born in New Dorp Beach, the former Rose Arnone settled in Oakwood in 1958. Mrs. Pellicano was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union for 35 years. She sewed wedding dresses in Staten Island communities that included South Beach, New Dorp and New Brighton, retiring in 1995. Mrs. Pellicano was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Oakwood Heights Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Oakwood. She graduated from New Dorp High School. Mrs. Pellicano enjoyed traveling, visiting Florida, California, Las Vegas and Niagara Falls, among other destinations. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking and baking, and loved being with her family. "She was the greatest mom in the world," said her son, Tom. "She loved company, loved to cook and have the kids come over to her house." Mrs. Pellicano was a parishioner of St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood. Her husband, Domenick, died in 1985. Her son, Joseph, died in 1984. In addition to her son, Tom, Mrs. Pellicano is survived by her sister, Jennie Polizzano; two grandsons, and five great-grandchildren. MURIEL NAGY, 77 Secretary, officer of VFW auxiliary Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Native Staten Islander Muriel Mae Nagy, 77, of Hopelawn, N.J., a homemaker and former secretary, died Saturday in the Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy, N.J., following a long illness. Born Muriel Mae Hickman in Port Richmond, she graduated from New Dorp High School. Mrs. Nagy settled in the Hopelawn section of Woodbridge, N.J., 55 years ago. From 1947 to 1955, she worked as a private secretary for Mutual of New York Insurance Co. in Manhattan. Mrs. Nagy left to care for her three children. In New Jersey, she was past president of the Hopelawn Memorial Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, past officer of the Hopelawn Youth Organization and of the Hopelawn Home and School Association, as well as a member of the Woodbridge AARP. An avid bowler who won several tournaments, Mrs. Nagy belonged to the Majestic Bowling League for senior citizens. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and visiting Atlantic City. She was a parishioner of Holy Spirit R.C. Church, Perth Amboy. Mrs. Nagy's husband of 52 years, Alex, died in 2003. Surviving are her two sons, Alex Jr. and David; her daughter, Jeanne Taylor; four brothers, Francis, Robert, John and Richard Hickman; four sisters, Vivienne Wilson, Marion Thompson, Janet Sadowski and Mary Ellen Geisler; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. JOSEPH CONCEPCION, 78 Supervisor in Island coroner's office Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Joseph Concepcion Sr. of Huguenot died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. He was 78. Born in Puerto Rico, Mr. Concepcion was brought to Manhattan as a toddler and moved to St. George at the age of 10. He remained in St. George for 32 years before moving to Huguenot. In 1993, Mr. Concepcion retired from the Richmond County medical examiner's office, where he worked as a supervisor for 25 years. Mr. Concepcion, who was a parishioner of the International Christian Center in Graniteville, enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, playing music and going to church, his family said. "He was a devoted Christian," said his daughter, Debra Lynch. "He will always be remembered, with all our love." Mr. Concepcion is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Isabel Estrada; three sons, Joseph Jr., Jerry and Richard; two brothers, Eddie and Sammy; two sisters, Alice Hausler and Gladys Sigarra, and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday from the Colonial Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a 10 a.m. service in the International Christian Center. Burial will follow in Calverton (L.I.) National Cemetery. GRACE HAZEL, 84 Factory worker collected ceramic elephants Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Longtime Midland Beach resident Grace E. Hazel, 84, a retired factory worker and homemaker, died Saturday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, where she was a patient for 10 days. Born Grace E. Raynor in Brooklyn, she and her husband, Frederick V. Sr., owned a Midland Beach summer home during the mid-1960s for three years. They liked the community so much that they settled there in 1969. For 15 years, Mrs. Hazel worked as an envelope maker in the former Grey Envelope Co., Brooklyn. "She could look at an envelope and tell you what size it was and how it was made," said her son, Frederick V. Jr. She loved ceramic elephants and collected them for nearly 70 years, tallying nearly 1,000 figurines. Mrs. Hazel was also an avid walker. She was known to go grocery- and window-shopping in New Dorp and Dongan Hills, trekking to and from her home. In addition to walking and collecting, she enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing bingo, attending Chinese auctions and bowling in the former Reliable Women's Bowling League. Mrs. Hazel also enjoyed visiting Atlantic City with her girl friends frequently. She enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and many nephews and nieces, especially Julie Terpenny and Anna Ferrara, according to family. "They visited my mother every week and practically lived with her when she was ill," her son said. "The three were like best friends." In addition to her son Frederick V. Jr., surviving Mrs. Hazel are a sister, Dorothy Tighe, and four grandchildren. Her husband of 34 years, Frederick V. Sr., died in 1987. The funeral service will be tomorrow at 8 p.m. in the Richmond Funeral Home, Grant City. Burial will be Thursday in Rockville Cemetery, Lynbrook, L.I. ELIZABETH MULLIN, 82 Homemaker graduated summa cum laude Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Elizabeth A. Mullin, 82, of West Brighton, a homemaker who loved spending time with family, died yesterday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Born Elizabeth A. Brown in the Bronx, Mrs. Mullin was 1994 brought to West Brighton as an infant. A homemaker, Mrs. Mullin graduated from Notre Dame Academy on Grymes Hill and received a bachelor's degree -- graduating summa cum laude -- from the former Notre Dame College, also on Grymes Hill. A longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, Tompkinsville, Mrs. Mullin sang in the church choir and also was a eucharistic minister. According to family, Mrs. Mullin loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. Surviving are her husband of 59 years, William Joseph; two sons, William R. and Paul D.; two daughters, Lizbeth Fischer and Christine Higgins, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Friday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with an 11 a.m. mass in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. A private cremation will follow. DORA DANIEL, 79 Nurse's aide enjoyed science fiction Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Longtime Staten Islander Dora Mae Daniel, 79, of West Brighton, a retired nurse's aide, died Wednesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, also West Brighton. She was born Dora Mae Miller in Aberdeen, Miss., and moved to Port Richmond in 1947 upon her marriage to Burke Daniel Jr. In 1979, the couple settled in West Brighton. Mrs. Daniel worked as a nurse's aide in Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home for 40 years, retiring in 1989. She enjoyed playing bingo at Our Lady of Mount Carmel-St. Benedicta R.C. Church in West Brighton. Mrs. Daniel also liked to travel, making frequent trips to Chicago and back home to Mississippi. A science fiction fan, she could be found watching The Sci-Fi Channel, whose The Outer Limits was among her favorite programs. She was also described as a woman devoted to her grandchildren. She loved spending time with her grandsons, James and Marvin Edmonds, and her great-granddaughter, Emony Edmonds, said her grandson, James. Mrs. Daniel's husband died in 1995 after 48 years of marriage. Surviving are her son, James Simis; her adopted daughter, Lilian Lamb; two grandsons, and one great-granddaughter. Funeral arrangements, including cremation, were handled by the Scamardella Funeral Home, West Brighton. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. DANIEL HUNT, 80 Loan officer, self-employed salesman Tuesday, October 25, 2005 By KIAWANA RICH ADVANCE STAFF WRITER Daniel J. (Buddy) Hunt, 80, of Manchester, N.J., a former Staten Island resident who was active in Island sports and served as the first commissioner of the board of governors for the Staten Island Pee Wee Football league, died Sunday in the Paul Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood, N.J. Born in Stapleton, Mr. Hunt moved to New Dorp in 1937. In the early 1960s, he moved to Eltingville. In 1986, he settled in Manchester. Mr. Hunt worked for more than 10 years as a loan officer for the former Chemical Bank at various branches on Staten Island. After the bank's mergers, Mr. Hunt left to pursue self-employment, mostly as a salesman at various businesses. He retired in 1986. A graduate of New Dorp High School, Mr. Hunt attended Wagner College on Grymes Hill. His involvement in Pee Wee Football was an outgrowth of his playing days with the storied New Dorp Queens, who represented the borough from 1936 to 1958. Mr. Hunt was a New York Giants season ticket holder. A history buff, Mr. Hunt was especially interested in the Civil War. During World War II, Mr. Hunt was a corporal who served in the U. S. Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. He was stationed in Texas. He also enjoyed working crossword puzzles. He was a wonderful brother and we will all miss him very, very much, said his sister, Betty Guidera. Mr. Hunt was a former parishioner of Holy Child R.C. Church, Eltingville. His wife of 23 years, the former Gloria Vasallo Araneo, died in 1986. Along with his sister, also surviving are a stepson, Vincent Araneo; two stepdaughters, Terri Buatta and Edie Araneo; one brother, John Hunt; a sister, Ellen McCarthy, and six step-grandchildren. CATHERINE CONSTANT, 77 Maitre d', member of church choir Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Catherine Constant, 77, a former Staten Islander and retired maitre d', died Sunday in Victory Memorial Hospital and Skilled Nursing Center in Brooklyn. Born Catherine Itsines on a farm in Bulls Head, she moved to Manhattan in 1950 and then to Long Island in 1956. Mrs. Constant relocated to Willowbrook in 1960 and settled in Brooklyn in 1981. For 10 years, Mrs. Constant worked for the former Fomach's in Dongan Hills. She was a maitre d' for the Bay Shore Restaurant and Jahn's Ice Cream Parlor and Restaurant in Brooklyn for another 10 years. "She loved ice cream. She even went against doctor's orders, and the last thing she ate was ice cream," said her son, Dennis Constant. She retired in 1987. As a child and later as an adult, Mrs. Constant was a member of the choir for Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Bulls Head. She was the president of Daughters of Penelope, also at the church. An avid reader, Mrs. Constant enjoyed dancing, sewing, artwork, music, cooking and watching baseball. Mrs. Constant was a parishioner of Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. Her husband of 23 years, Michael Constant, died in 1976. In addition to her son, Dennis, surviving are a daughter Diana Bakakos; a brother, Gus Itsines; a sister, Madeline Johanides, and two grandchildren. ANTHONY CACCESE, 85 Fuel, tire company owner, WWII veteran Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Anthony J. Caccese, 85, of New Dorp, a World War II veteran and fuel company owner, died Sunday at Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, where he had been a patient for a week. He was being treated for Parkinson's disease, which had been diagnosed five years ago. Born in New Brighton, Mr. Caccese was a resident of the Sisters of St. Francis of the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin at Mount Loretto during his teen-age years. "He was one of the 'barno's,' the kids who used to take care of the barn," said his son, James. "They were tough guys." Soon after attending McKee Vocational High School, Mr. Caccese joined the U.S. Army during World War II. He rose to the rank of staff sergeant in the military police, and was in charge of transporting European prisoners of war to camps in the western United States, including New Mexico and Arizona. During a leave, Mr. Caccese married fellow Staten Islander Rose Cannizzaro in 1944. He received his honorable discharge from the service the following year. The couple initially resided in New Brighton before settling in New Dorp in 1953. They relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., upon his retirement in 1983. They moved back to New Dorp earlier this year. After the war, Mr. Caccese studied the home heating business. He broke into the industry as an employee of the Quinlan Fuel Co., West Brighton, where he worked for about three years. He then started his own home-based business, the Elgin Fuel Co., in 1952. He sold Elgin Fuel in 1959, the same year he founded the Caccese Tire Co., Bulls Head. He retired in 1983, turning the company over to his sons, Anthony and James. Mr. Caccese enjoyed traveling and playing golf; on a trip with his wife to Scotland, he played the Old Course at St. Andrew's. He also enjoyed travels throughout Europe and to Hong Kong, taking Caribbean cruises and making trips to Atlantic City. He was a parishioner of both St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood, and Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp. He was also a member of the Staten Island Italian Club. In addition to his wife of 61 years, Rose, and his sons, Anthony and James, Mr. Caccese is survived by another son, Thomas; a sister, Gemma Caccese; six grandchildren, and one great-grandson. ANNE SMITH, 83 Legal secretary enjoyed decorating Tuesday, October 25, 2005 Former Staten Islander Anne M. Smith, 83, of South Seaside Park, N.J., a former legal secretary who enjoyed decorating her home each holiday season, died Sunday at home. Born Anne M. Zarrelli in West Brighton, she moved to Port Richmond in 1965, before settling in South Seaside Park in 1990. Mrs. Smith graduated from Port Richmond High School in 1938, and then from the former Baker Business School in Stapleton. She worked as a legal secretary in a St. George law firm for several years. She was also a secretary at the George Sharp Naval Architects in Manhattan during World War II. After the war, she devoted herself to making a home for her daughter, Sharon Smith. Besides decorating her home, Mrs. Smith enjoyed growing houseplants, walking along the beaches of the Jersey Shore and vacationing in Bermuda.
