PAT PANZARINO, 84 World War II veteran returned to college in his 70s Friday, October 28, 2005 By MAURA YATES ADVANCE STAFF WRITER Pat Panzarino, 84, of Castleton Corners, a retired technical supervisor who helped guide communications for the first mission that put men on the moon, died yesterday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. Mr. Panzarino worked as a technical supervisor for the former RCA Global Communications, Manhattan, for 40 years, in the overseas control room. Trained at the RCA Institute in Manhattan, he covered several space events that were destined for the history books, including the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space programs. In recognition of his contributions to the ground support team of Nascom Networks during the Apollo 11 mission -- the first manned moon landing -- he earned a metal medallion crafted from actual working components of the spacecraft Eagle, which landed on the lunar surface, and the spacecraft Columbia, which orbited the moon. After his retirement in 1984, Mr. Panzarino joined the RCA Retirement Club. Born in Manhattan, he was brought to Midwood, Brooklyn, as a child. He settled in Castleton Corners in 1975. In 2002, 51 years after he finished high school, Mr. Panzarino graduated from the College of Staten Island with a bachelor of arts degree in anthropology. He paid full tuition, drove to class, studied and wrote term papers, just like any student a quarter his age -- but he offered his fellow scholars an education that could not be had from a book. I brought to the college my knowledge and experience from all my years and my lifetime, he said in a 2002 Advance interview about his scholastic achievement. Mr. Panzarino's mind was not all that remained active in his later years. He was a member of the New Dorp Friendship Club, where he enjoyed dancing. His waltzes, foxtrots and cha-chas earned him the social dancing bronze medal in the 1996 Staten Island Senior Olympics. He also enjoyed walking throughout Clove Lakes Park. Mr. Panzarino was a member of the Castleton Corners chapter of the AARP and the Catholic Widow and Widowers Club. A World War II veteran, he served as a radioman first class in the Navy, stationed stateside in Washington, D.C., from 1942 until 1946. His family said he sent the SOS when a German submarine surfaced off the coast of Long Island during the war. Mr. Panzarino was a member of the American Legion and the Catholic War Veterans. He was a true gentleman, said his son-in-law, James Jacobellis. I have nothing but the highest respect for him. Mr. Panzarino was a parishioner of St. Teresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners. His wife of 46 years, the former Marie Artale, died in 1990. Surviving are his three sons, John, Frank and Kenneth; his daughter, Ginny Jacobellis; a sister, Frances Tammaro, and five grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa's Church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Queens. JOHN COLAMARINO, 65 Westerleigh resident, truck driver liked to play cards Friday, October 28, 2005 John (Johnny Tattoo) Colamarino, 65, of Westerleigh, a truck driver, died yesterday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Brooklyn. Born in Brooklyn, he spent about 15 years in Victorville, Calif., before returning to New York 15 years ago, settling in Westerleigh. Mr. Colamarino worked as a truck driver for 40 years for Harbor Freight in Elizabeth, N.J., before going to work at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. -- a job he held at the time of his death. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. A U.S. Navy veteran, he enjoyed fishing, cooking, playing cards and spending time with his family. Mr. Colamarino was a parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh. Surviving are his mother, Ada Cardinale; his daughter, Janine Colamarino; his six sons, John, Daniel, Joseph, Louis and Frank Colamarino and Thomas Piluso; a brother, Guido Colamarino; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Holy Family Church. CARMELA ESPOSITO, 80 Liked to knit, have tea parties with granddaughters Friday, October 28, 2005 Carmela Esposito, 80, a homemaker and longtime resident of Dongan Hills who recently moved to St. Cloud, Fla., died yesterday at home. Born Carmela Prestia in Brooklyn, she left school early so she could help support her family and went to work full-time as a bookbinder in a Manhattan factory. In 1945, when she was 21, she and Bennett Esposito were married. Ten years later, the couple moved to Staten Island, living in West Brighton and then Grasmere before settling in Dongan Hills in 1974. After 49 years of marriage, Mr. Esposito died in 1994. His widow remained in their home until last year, when she moved to central Florida to live with her son. Mrs. Esposito's daughter, Barbara Gordon, described her mother as a soft-spoken, quiet woman who was extremely devoted to her family. A gifted knitter, Mrs. Esposito created sweaters and blankets, weaving in characters like kittens and Winnie-the-Pooh. One of her crowning achievements was a twin-size blanket she made for her grandson, which was decorated with toy soldiers standing at attention. She brought such joy into everyone's lives, said Mrs. Gordon. Her grandchildren are sad, but they have such great memories of her. The long walks they took with Mrs. Esposito will be one memory, Mrs. Gordon said. And her granddaughters, in particular, already miss the special tea parties they had with their grandmother. They took turns sleeping over at her house every weekend, said Mrs. Gordon. Mrs. Esposito hit an emotional high when her first great-grandchild was born in 2003. That was the love of her life, for the short time that she knew her, said Mrs. Gordon. In addition to her daughter, surviving Mrs. Esposito are her son, John; three sisters, Netti Cacciatore, Angie Migilore and Stella Corona; 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart R.C. Church, both West Brighton. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.
