Mr. Faison graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy, Wayne, Pa., and studied at the Art Students League of New York in Manhattan. He served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II as a provost marshal, and was stationed in Panama. He was discharged as a major in 1945 and was awarded the Bronze Star. For many years, Mr. Faison worked as a dredging superintendent for the Arundel Corp. at its former Brooklyn location and was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers. He was a longtime member of the Belle Lettres Society, and a member of the Corn Cob Theater and the Great Kills Community Center theater group. Described by his family as a prolific artist in his later years, Mr. Faison had many paintings displayed in art festivals and prominent Island businesses. WALTER JOHNSON, 87 Barge captain, merchant mariner traveled the world Thursday, September 01, 2005 Former Staten Islander Walter Johnson, 87, of Ocean Grove, N.J., a retired barge captain, died Tuesday in Twin Bridges at Whiting (N.J.), an assisted-living center, where he had resided for about three weeks. Born in Brooklyn, he moved to Stapleton around 1946 after serving in World War II. He relocated to Middletown, N.J., in 1958 before settling in Ocean Grove in 1984. Mr. Johnson worked for 30 years as a barge captain in the Marine Department of the former Erie and Lackawanna Railroad in Hoboken, N.J. He retired around 1982. He was a member of the Sons of Norway and a lifetime member of the Beacon Light Masonic Lodge. Mr. Johnson was an avid traveler and visited Europe several times. He enjoyed reading history, especially accounts of the Titanic sea disaster and the tragic Hindenberg airship. He also liked to watch boxing matches. During World War II, he served as a military policeman in the U.S. Army, stationed in Charlotte, N.C. He later became an officer in the Merchant Marine and traveled the world. Walter lived life his way. No person or experience will ever replace the happy times we shared with him, said his stepson, Gordon Swanson, and his daughter-in-law, Susan Swanson. Mr. Johnson attended King of Kings Lutheran Church in Middletown, N.J. His wife of 40 years, the former Charlotte Walz, died in 1984. Also surviving are his stepson, Thomas Swanson, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held yesterday in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. The Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, handled the arrangements. SARAH SIEGEL, 91 School secretary won art awards Thursday, September 01, 2005 Former Staten Islander Sarah F. Siegel, 91, of Freehold, N.J., a longtime school secretary and artist, died Tuesday in Applewood Estates, a nursing home in Freehold. Born Sarah Horowitz in Manhattan, she also briefly resided in the Bronx, Queens and Philadelphia before settling in Tottenville with her husband, Philip Siegel, around 1966. She relocated to Freehold in 2003. Mrs. Siegel had a 40-year career as a secretary with the former Board of Education, working at Walton Girls High School, the Bronx; PS 133 and PS 164, both in Queens, and New Dorp High School, as a substitute. She retired as a secretary from Tottenville High School in 1975 after nine years. As popular as she was with students, Mrs. Siegel -- who attended both Hunter College and City College of New York -- became well known in artistic circles, especially for her abstract designs. In 1971, she won honorable mention in the Conference House Art Show with her mimeo prints -- etchings made using old stencil paper. A year later, Mrs. Siegel was featured in the Advance for her three-dimensional creations made from materials including turkey bones and tomato and peach skins. "It seemed like such a shame just to throw them away the way most cooks do," said Mrs. Siegel during a 1972 interview. "I hate to get rid of something when it still seems able to be of some use." A member of the Staten Island Artists Federation, Mrs. Siegel's large black-and-white painting, "Fantasy in Motion," took first prize in the federation's annual juried exhibition, held in Snug Harbor Cultural Center's Newhouse Gallery in 1987. Ten years later, Mrs. Siegel took third place in the Senior Artist Fence Show held at the New Lane Shores waterfront promenade, Rosebank. "She also liked painting in oils, acrylics and water colors," said her daughter, Bryna Bear. Mrs. Siegel wed her husband, Philip, in December of 1938. During their 40 years of marriage, the couple enjoyed traveling, including trips to Europe, Africa and China. Even after her husband's death in 1979, Mrs. Siegel continued to travel, making a visit to Japan in the 1980s. She also enjoyed walking and reading, especially on her front porch in Tottenville. In addition to her daughter, Bryna, Mrs. Siegel is survived by her daughters, Wendy and Carolyn Siegel; her son, Daniel Siegel; a sister, Ina Ragan; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral was yesterday in Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels, Inc., Ocean, N.J. The arrangements included cremation. PATRICIA HENRI, 74 West Brighton homemaker, proud mother Thursday, September 01, 2005 Lifelong Staten Islander Patricia Henri, 74, of West Brighton, a homemaker who took pride in supporting her four children in all their endeavors, died yesterday at home. Born Patricia O'Brien in Tompkinsville, she settled in West Brighton in 1951, after her marriage to William F. Henri. Mrs. Henri took pride in the upkeep of her home and raising her four children. "She was a stay-at-home mother raising four children," said her husband of 54 years. "One of her pride and joys was guiding the children through 12 years of parochial schools and watching all four go off to college." Mrs. Henri often welcomed her children's friends to enjoy homemade treats after school. Many would often stop by and spend time at the house on a daily basis. "Her children had many friends and they were always welcome in her home," said her husband. "Not only would they get fed, but there was also a basketball court in the backyard for the kids to play in. It was just nice." A 1948 graduate of Curtis High School, Mrs. Henri was an excellent student and spent two years on the cheerleading squad. She became ill when she was in her early 40s, her family said. Over time, she dealt with several serious illnesses, including bone cancer and emphysema. Despite her infirmities, "she always remained upbeat," her husband said. Mrs. Henri's hobbies included reading books, doing crossword puzzles and reading about history, with an emphasis on ancient Egypt. She also was a skilled seamstress, creating everything from clothing to quilts and slipcovers. "She fully supported her children in any endeavor they chose, including career, education, sports and their love of horses. Whatever we wanted to do, she was always there," said her son, William Jr. Mrs. Henri was a parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, Tompkinsville. In addition to her husband, William, and son, William Jr., surviving are her sons, Thomas and Robert; her daughter, Mary Dreyer; a sister, Barbara Baiera; and 10 grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Harmon Home for Funeral, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. The arrangements include cremation. PATRICIA FIDUCIA, 72 Enjoyed making decorations for her home Thursday, September 01, 2005 Native Staten Islander Patricia Fiducia, 72, of Catskills, N.Y., a former secretary and a homemaker, died yesterday in Eden Park Nursing Home, Catskills. Born Patricia Duggan in South Beach, she moved to New Brighton in 1963. She later returned to South Beach before relocating to Catskills in 1990. Mrs. Fiducia worked for seven years as a secretary for two podiatrists in Stapleton, before leaving the workforce to raise her children. She was a member of the Ocean Grove Senior Center, Catskills. Mrs. Fiducia enjoyed art and crafts, especially making decorations for her home. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was a loving person, she had a good heart and she would give you anything. She would take the shirt off her back, said her son, William. She was one in a million. In addition to her son, William, Mrs. Fiducia is survived by her sons, Michael, Paul, and Peter; her two daughters, Francine Cosne and Linda Coates; a sister, Elaine Garzone; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. The arrangements, including cremation, were handled by the Milspaugh Camerato Funeral Home, Catskills. NICHOLAS SALVADEO, 72 Architect designed catering halls, the 'White House' Thursday, September 01, 2005 Nicholas J. Salvadeo, 72, of New Dorp, a retired architect whose expertise in zoning law made him the person countless developers, homeowners, politicians, and even a former Mafia boss turned to over the years for building plans, died Tuesday at his New Dorp home. Mr. Salvadeo's imprint can be found on well-known buildings right in the neighborhood where he lived for more than four decades. He handled a renovation of Shalimar Caterers, now the Excelsior Grand, and the remodeling of Colonial Funeral Home. He also designed the weight room at Monsignor Farrell High School in Oakwood and the St. Jude monument for the St. Charles Seminary. During his 30-year career, he also designed car dealerships, shopping centers and hospital clinics on and off Staten Island, and served on advisory committees to the city Buildings Department and Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA). In 1988, he consulted on housing issues as a member of former Rep. Guy Molinari's federal fact-finding committee considering the opening of the Navy's Stapleton home port. In the late 1970s, a contractor brought Paul Castellano to Mr. Salvadeo's office on Flagg Place in Dongan Hills. Mr. Castellano, a former Gambino crime family boss who was killed in 1985, wanted to build a house on Todt Hill. Mr. Salvadeo designed a white structure with a curved portico supported by columns, which was later called "The White House" The staid home had four bedrooms, eight baths, and a regulation-size tennis court. Mr. Salvadeo's family said he treated the Castellano job just like any other project. "They came to him because of his knowledge. He considered every person's home as if it was his own," said the former Anna Buongiovanni, Mr. Salvadeo's wife of 48 years. Mr. Salvadeo was well-known for his success in arguing problem cases at the BSA. His family said that, of the nearly 3,000 building-related applications he handled over the years, roughly 300 were requests for difficult zoning variances. He won nearly all those cases, they added. "He had just such extensive knowledge of the law, that was his true specialty," said David Businelli, an architect who apprenticed with Mr. Salvadeo and took over Salvadeo Associates after his mentor retired in 1996. "He stood by what the law said and he fought for his clients," added Businelli. SPARKED CONTROVERSY That willingness to champion difficult cases occasionally sparked controversy. In 1981, the Todt Hill Civic Association challenged an extension of a barn handled by Mr. Salvadeo. They argued that the extension was really an attempt to create a brand-new custom home and skirt other approvals. Mr. Salvadeo successfully argued that the alteration was legitimate. He later designed the 14-story Ocean View Tower condominium in Rosebank for builder Mario Marsillo. He also argued Marsillo's case before an angry Community Board 1 and the BSA when Marsillo built an extra floor on a Bay Street condominium in Stapleton. "He was a very capable architect," Marsillo said of his friend of 48 years. Mr. Salvadeo got his start in architecture as a draftsman serving in the engineer corps of the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. In that role, he helped design housing in Korea. When he returned from Korea, he served four more years in the Marine Corps Reserves and went to work as a draftsman for a Brooklyn company. He studied architecture at night at the Institute of Design and Construction in downtown Brooklyn. He received his license to practice architecture in 1971 and opened his business in the office he built on Flagg Place. Mr. Salvadeo was president of the Staten Island chapter of the American Institute of Architects, from 1979 to 1980; director of the New York State Association of Architects, from 1979 to 1981; a member of the New York Council of Architects in 1980, and director of the zoning advisory council to the BSA, 1980. He also served from 1991-1992 on the borough president's research committee for encouraging economic growth. Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Salvadeo moved to New Dorp in 1961. He was a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp. His family said he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, traveling, gardening and watching old war movies. In addition to his wife, Anna, surviving are his son, Richard; his two daughters, Laurie Nielsen and Susan Leavy; a sister, Joan Cusumano, and 12 grandchildren. Mr. Salvadeo's son, Robert, died in 1985. His granddaughter, Ashley Nielsen, died in 1994. The funeral will be Saturday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. MARY FRANCHI, 81 Nurse's aide enjoyed Pokeno with friends Thursday, September 01, 2005 Mary Franchi, 81, of Midland Beach, a retired nurse's aide, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born Mary DeMarco in Manhattan, she settled in Midland Beach in 1950. Mrs. Franchi worked for 27 years as a nurse's aide at Lily Pond Nursing Home, Arrochar. She retired in 1986. A parishioner of St. Margaret Mary's R.C. Church, Midland Beach, she was a member of its Golden Age Society. Mrs. Franchi looked forward to Saturday night Pokeno games with her girlfriends, and watching movies. She also liked to crochet, and enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City. She loved her neighbors and friends, said her daughter-in-law, Marion Franchi. Mrs. Franchi's husband of 45 years, Ernest, died in 1988. Surviving are her son, Peter; a brother, Peter DeMarco; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Her son, Joseph, died in 1997. The funeral will be Saturday from the Richmond Funeral Home, Grant City, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Margaret Mary's Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Grasmere. LORETTA CIAFFONE, 91 Seamstress loved attending Yankees baseball games Thursday, September 01, 2005 Barbara Maisano was watching the New York Yankees-Seattle Mariners game Tuesday night when an employee from Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home called to say that her 91-year-old mother, Loretta (Laura) Ciaffone of Westerleigh, had died. "She loved watching the Yankees. She was a big baseball fan and she made me a big baseball fan," Mrs. Maisano said of her mother, a retired seamstress who moved to Staten Island from the Gravesend section of Brooklyn six years ago, to live with her only child. "We used to go [to games] quite often. Everybody else would go to the movies. We'd go to Yankee Stadium," Mrs. Maisano recalled. Growing up, she had the distinction among her peers of adopting her love of baseball from her mother, rather than her father. Mrs. Ciaffone would pay the 50-cent admission for mother and daughter to watch live games on "Ladies' Nights." Once admitted, they would negotiate with stadium ushers to get better seats, her daughter said. Born Loretta Costa in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, Mrs. Ciaffone married a Brooklyn Dodgers fan, Raymond Ciaffone, in 1935. He died in 1978, three years after she retired from a host of seamstress jobs throughout Brooklyn, her daughter said. When she wasn't watching a Yankees game, Mrs. Ciaffone enjoyed playing poker, Mrs. Maisano added. In addition to her daughter, Barbara, Mrs. Ciaffone leaves behind two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. JOSEPH VELARDI, 68 Army veteran owned travel agency Thursday, September 01, 2005 Joseph A. Velardi, 68, of Midland Beach, a former travel agency owner, died yesterday in Calvary Hospital Home Care, Brooklyn, of throat cancer. Born in Gravesend, Brooklyn, in 1937, he graduated from Lafayette High School in his native borough, where he also attended Brooklyn College.
