ROSE ROSSINI, 93 U.S. Customs worker was devoted to St. Anthony Friday, September 02, 2005 Westerleigh resident Rose Rossini, a homemaker and retired U.S. Customs Service expediter, died Wednesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton, after a short illness. She was 93. Born Rose Mellini to the late Vincenzo and Angela Mellini in Bari, Italy, she immigrated to Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, in 1930, when she was 18 years old. She remained there until 1999 when she moved in with her daughter, Angela Cipriano, and son-in-law, Emil (Sonny), in Westerleigh. A homemaker for most of her life, Mrs. Rossini began working for the U.S. Customs Service as an expediter when she was 59 years old and worked for 15 years, retiring in 1986. A devout Catholic, she was especially devoted to St. Anthony, and would say lengthy novenas, especially on Tuesday, which was her longest prayer day of the week. Mrs. Rossini was a parishioner of St. Mary's Mother of Jesus R.C. Church in Bensonhurst, where she was an active member of the Rosary Society and the Senior Citizens Club. She also enjoyed cooking, particularly artichokes, stuffed peppers and stew, her family said. In her leisure time, Mrs. Rossini enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City and would hold weekly card games in her home with many friends. "She adored her family," said June Fiore, Mrs. Rossini's granddaughter, and used the adjectives "peacemaking, endearing, gentle, happy and loving" to describe her grandmother. "The most important memory her family possesses is that Nony was a giving person in the world," she said. "Nony Rose was a treasure," continued her granddaughter. "She had a way of making everyone feel that they were the most important person in her life. The most valuable lesson that all could learn from Nony Rose is that peace is the most important value in our lives." Mrs. Rossini's husband of 40 years, the former Vincent (Oscar) Rossini, died in 1969. In addition to her granddaughter and her daughter, Angela, surviving are five more grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Rossini's daughter, Ann Prestia, died in 1992. The funeral will be Saturday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Theresa's R.C. Church, Castleton Corners. Burial will follow in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.
