MARY HENDERSON, 75 Served on Island Sports Hall of Fame committee Wednesday, September 07, 2005 By TEVAH PLATT ADVANCE STAFF WRITER Lifelong Staten Islander Mary A. Henderson once said she should have had a bed at Cromwell Center in Tompkinsville, because she would play basketball "any time, any place." A retired legal secretary and former athlete and coach, the 75-year-old Great Kills resident died Monday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, after a short illness. The former Mary A. Connelly was born in New Brighton, and grew up playing basketball at Mahoney Playground. While attending St. Peter's Girls High School, she played basketball with Staten Island's Police Athletic League, the Catholic Youth Organization and the Parks-Mirror League's Farmerettes. In 1947, she set the girls' single-game scoring record -- netting 47 points during a Parks-Mirror tournament-- a record she held for six years. After graduation, she went on to play semipro ball with the Bronx Sparks. In the 1950s, she coached various girls' teams on Staten Island, including the Parks-Mirror League's Crescents when they won the 1950 city championship, played in the old Madison Square Garden. In 1981, she told the Advance that "watching those kids play their hearts out was the thrill of a lifetime." While she called basketball her "first love," Mrs. Henderson also loved playing softball, volleyball and table tennis. She won a statewide Ping-Pong championship in 1943, her family said. In 1951, she and Eugene Henderson were married and moved to West Brighton. Mrs. Henderson moved to Oakwood in 1973 and settled in Great Kills in 1985. From 1947 to 1963, she worked as a secretary to the president of the former H.C. Hauth Co. Inc., an insurance company in Manhattan. After her husband, Eugene, died in 1970, she worked at various law firms on Staten Island as a paralegal and legal secretary. She was certified as a paralegal by the College of Staten Island in 1978 and retired from the St. George law offices of Martin Filler in 2002 after working there for more than a decade. The daughter of a Texan, Mrs. Henderson was a longtime member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. In the 1960s, she was president of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Staten Island Football League. In 1994, she became an original committee member of the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame and served in that capacity, as well as secretary of the Hall of Fame, for several years. Mrs. Henderson was a parishioner of St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood, and was a member of its Visitation Ministry and Ladies of Charity. She had a penchant for reading novels and completing the Sunday crossword in The New York Times. She loved to cook and host dinner parties -- she was known for her "chicken supreme," and her grandchildren especially loved her mashed potatoes. Mrs. Henderson also rooted for the New York Yankees and enjoyed attending the sports events of her children and grandchildren. In 1980, she was president of the first Sports Booster Club at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School in Huguenot, which her son, Gene, attended. "She never missed a game, and she taught me how to be a good sportsman -- win or lose," Gene said. Mrs. Henderson also passed on her athleticism to her daughter, Holly Ciaravino, who ran track in her youth. "She was a generous, loving woman who was dedicated to her family," said her daughter-in-law, Pamela Henderson. "She will be missed greatly." In addition to her son, Gene, and her daughter, Holly, Mrs. Henderson is survived by two brothers, Robert and William Connelly; a sister, Elizabeth Hansen, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Saturday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:15 a.m. in St. Charles Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton. PARIS AGOSTO, 4 months Loved the fresh air, trees and the sun hitting her face Wednesday, September 07, 2005 Paris Renee Agosto, a 4-month-old infant, died Thursday at her Dongan Hills home of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Paris, the daughter of Tianna Agosto, was born April 6. Even during her short life, Paris made quite an impression, according to her mother. "She loved to laugh, she was bubbly and loved the wind and was so happy to be alive, and she was overall a great baby and good girl," said Ms. Agosto of her first child. Her mother said Paris was born three months early in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze, and had to spend most of that time in the hospital, having some minor surgical procedures and gaining enough strength so she could go home by July. "It was a tough time. I had to adjust that I had a baby and she was sick and premature, and it was really rough, but then, on July 23, she came home," said Ms. Agosto. "She really was blessed, and children and everyone who knew her and saw her were touched by her. She had big, bright brown eyes and a big smile and she smiled at all the littlest things," said her mother. According to her mother, Paris liked watching "Popeye the Sailor" cartoons and loved classical music -- "the sound of it was very soothing and it put her to sleep," she said. Paris also had her two very good friends, Dollie and Teddy, who went with her wherever she went, said her mother. Her tiny daughter also liked to go out for walks, loved fresh air, trees and the sun hitting her face and the taste of ice cream -- chocolate chip cookie dough, to be exact, her mother said. She also loved being with her mother and her grandmother, "who made her laugh. Overall, she was a really, really happy baby," her mother said. "She was excited about life, she was precious," said Ms. Agosto. In addition to her mother, Tianna, also surviving are her maternal grandparents, Tanya and John Kelly, and several aunts and uncles.
