TERESA DeROSA, 81 Oakwood resident worked at Brooklyn cleaners Friday, September 09, 2005 Teresa DeRosa, 81, of Oakwood, a homemaker, died Wednesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. She was a wonderful person, wonderful friend and wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and godmother, said her daughter, Jennie Misiti. We are going to miss her. A native of Brooklyn, the former Teresa Savino moved to Oakwood nine years ago. Mrs. DeRosa worked for five years as a supervisor for the former Everbest Co., a lightbulb manufacturing firm in Manhattan, before leaving the workforce to devote herself to her family. She later returned to work and was employed for 10 years at the former Spevak Cleaners in Brooklyn. Mrs. DeRosa enjoyed caring for her great-grandchildren. Her husband of 54 years, Jerry, died in 2002. In addition to her daughter, Jennie, surviving are her five sisters, Carmela Sorrentio, Anna Davi, Maria Magliulio, Laura Annetta and Antoinette Tardy; a brother, Pasquale Savino; two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. JOHN CHAPUT, 74 Massachusetts native was great-grandfather of 3 Friday, September 09, 2005 John Joseph Chaput, a former laborer, died Tuesday in Staten Island Care Center, New Brighton. The 74-year-old had been under care at the center since January. Born in Worcester, Mass., he lived in various communities on Staten Island. He lived in Tottenville from 1983 until 2003, when he moved to New Dorp to live with his son Jason. For 10 years, Mr. Chaput worked as a laborer for what is now known as the Department of Environmental Protection in Manhattan. He left on disability in 1975. His oldest child, Marilyn Wancek, recalled always being Daddy's little girl and had fond memories of walking along the beach with her father. Mr. Chaput was a member of Faith Assembly of God Church, Tottenville. In addition to his daughter, Marilyn, and son Jason, surviving are his wife of 33 years, the former Virginia Gerwer; his sons, John Jr., Christopher and David; his daughter, Phyllis Chaput; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and his former wife, Jean Chaput. JOHN BERGGREN, 97 Con Edison worker liked to travel across the country Friday, September 09, 2005 Lifelong Staten Islander John R. Berggren, 97, of Rosebank, a former accountant and a U.S. Navy veteran, died Wednesday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton. During World War II, Mr. Berggren served aboard the USS Intrepid. After three years of service in the Pacific Ocean, he was discharged as a storekeeper first class in 1945. He was reactivated during the Korean War, and served on the experimental destroyer escort USS Jack W. Wilke, stationed in Key West, Fla. He was a member of the Tappen Post of the American Legion. Born in Stapleton, Mr. Berggren settled in Rosebank in the early 1940s. He graduated from Curtis High School and earned his bachelor's degree in accounting from New York University, Manhattan. For 44 years, Mr. Berggren worked for Con Edison in St. George, Livingston and Manhattan. He retired as a senior accountant in 1970. An inveterate walker, Mr. Berggren would stride to work when based on Staten Island. He would also frequently walk to the Staten Island Ferry to catch the boat in the morning and continue walking to his 14th Street office in Manhattan. With a love for golf, Mr. Berggren played at Silver Lake Golf Course on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays -- well into his 90s. With his wife, he also enjoyed traveling around the country. Since his retirement, the couple had driven through the 48 states and the District of Columbia in the Continental U.S. and were only stopped by snow and ice on their way to Alaska. Mr. Berggren visited Hawaii by himself during his career in the Navy. During their journeys, the Berggrens visited most of the national parks in the country. Mr. Berggren was a parishioner of St. John's Episcopal Church, Rosebank. His wife of about 55 years, the former Florence DeLuccia, died in 1993. Surviving are his two sons, John M. and William; seven grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be Monday at 3 p.m. in the Martin Hughes Funeral Home, Concord. IVAN MARSHALL, 71 With Staten Island Preschool since its inception Friday, September 09, 2005 Ivan Stanly Marshall of Manalapan, N.J., an energetic founder of two Staten Island schools and a champion of ethics, died Sunday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. He was 71. Born in London, Mr. Marshall received a degree in accounting from Buckingham College and worked as a land developer. He moved to Emerson Hill in 1967 with a goal of starting a Staten Island school for preschoolers through third graders. Mr. Marshall's zeal for pedagogy and child development led him to buy an Arrochar house, convert its living spaces into classrooms and open the Marshall School on McClean Avenue in 1967. In the school's first four years, enrollment grew from 10 students to more than 300. Mr. Marshall, who stressed the importance of early childhood education to parents, emphasized self-expression and socialization amid the routine subjects of math, reading and social studies. In the 1970s, he served as president and financial adviser on the board of directors of the Jewish Foundation Schools. In 1984, the Marshall School closed and Staten Island Preschool moved to New Dorp. Mr. Marshall founded the Manalapan Preschool in the mid-1990s and continued working with Staten Island Preschool until his death. "He had unbelievable drive," said Caryn Santoro, director of Staten Island Preschool. "He became like a surrogate father to me." About 12 years ago, Mr. Marshall and his wife, the former Joan Spalding, moved to Manalapan. A man of strong beliefs and faith, he kept kosher, celebrated Jewish holidays and was known to fight for what he believed to be ethically and morally correct. Mr. Marshall was a member of the Chabad-Lubavitch Center in Freehold, N.J. In addition to his wife of 43 years, Joan, surviving are his four daughters, Alisa Fields, Susan Kendall, Tracey Smith and Vanessa Halpern, and 12 grandchildren. The funeral was Tuesday from the Menorah Chapels, New Springville. Burial was in United Hebrew Cemetery, Richmond. EDWARD ARGENIO, 57 Vietnam-era veteran was NYMEX Exchange broker Friday, September 09, 2005 Edward Argenio, a former commodities broker, died Tuesday at his Tottenville home. He was 57. Born in Brooklyn, he moved to Tottenville 21 years ago. Mr. Argenio worked as a commodities broker for the NYMEX Exchange, Manhattan, for 30 years. He left work due to illness last year. His wife of 26 years, the former Susan Ducalo, described Mr. Argenio as her best friend, someone everyone could rely on for support. "He will truly be missed by all he came in contact with," his wife said. "He was a loving and giving individual." Mr. Argenio served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, stationed in Germany. He enjoyed cooking and fund-raising for the Dr. Theodore A. Atlas Foundation. Mr. Argenio was a parishioner of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, Tottenville. In addition to his wife, Susan, surviving are his son, E.J.; his two daughters, Alexandra and Gabrielle Argenio, and a brother, James. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains. DOUGLAS METZ, 83 Purple Heart recipient never missed a day of work Friday, September 09, 2005 Former Staten Islander Douglas C. Metz, 83, a decorated World War II veteran and retired maintenance worker, died Monday at his Mill Rift, Pa., home. The Stapleton native joined the U.S. Marines at the age of 17 and served in the Philippines during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart. After his tour of duty, Mr. Metz worked in maintenance for the former 69th Street Ferry, St. George, for about 20 years. He was subsequently a maintenance worker for Consolidated Edison, Travis, for 20 years before retiring in the 1980s. In 1947, he and the former Pearl E. Olsen were married, and the couple moved to Mill Rift after Mr. Metz retired. Mr. Metz loved playing baseball and horseshoes with his family, and enjoyed playing pool and shuffleboard at the Roosa-Fleming Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Port Jervis, N.Y., where he was an active member. He had enjoyed road trips with his wife and never missed a day of work, according to his son Ronald. Mr. Metz also enjoyed the company of his pets, Sammy the lovebird and his Rottweiler, Bear. "He was a strict, take-charge, old-school, bread-winning type of guy," his son said. "He was great. Growing up, we had a very good life." Mr. Metz's wife of almost 55 years, Pearl, died in 2002. In addition to his son, Ronald, Mr. Metz is survived by his daughter, Janet Byrne; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. His son, John, died in 2003. DOROTHY DIMINO, 71 Dental secretary chronicled grandchildren's growth Friday, September 09, 2005 Dorothy Dimino, 71, a former Staten Islander and retired secretary, died Wednesday at her daughter's home in Effort, Pa. The former Dorothy Capitano graduated from high school in her native Brooklyn. She and her former husband, August Dimino, moved to Bulls Head in 1969. Ms. Dimino lived in Willowbrook for 27 years before moving to Effort last year to live with her daughter, Carol Dimino-Ward. A secretary and office manager at the former dentistry office of Drs. Gott and Slomovitz in Dongan Hills for about 15 years, she retired in 1992. While living on Staten Island, she was a member of the International Christian Center, Graniteville. In her leisure time, Ms. Dimino took adult education courses at the College of Staten Island. She enjoyed dancing and reading novels, biographies and spiritual books. Through telephone conversations, Ms. Dimino liked to foster her close friendships. She also loved lamb chops, caramel popcorn and soap operas, and had a special bond with her 5-year-old Chihuahua, Ricardo. Ms. Dimino took audio recordings of her grandchildren, Jacqueline and Cameron Frisch, to chronicle their growth, year by year. She loved spending time with her family, and was "the epitome of unconditional love," her daughter said. "Everyone came to her to talk," said Mrs. Dimino-Ward. "She was uncritical, reasonable, patient and wise." In addition to her daughter and two grandchildren, Ms. Dimino is survived by her son, Gary; a brother, Charles Capitano, and a sister, Carmela Serraino. DOROTHEA DILLON, 79 Mother of 7 worked at Chase Bank for over 40 years Friday, September 09, 2005 Dorothea Dillon, 79, a retired bank assistant vice president, died Wednesday at her New Springville home. Born Dorothea Clinton in the Bronx, she graduated from Cathedral High School in Manhattan. She moved to Manhattan when she married Daniel J. Dillon. For more than 40 years, Mrs. Dillon worked for the former Chase Manhattan Bank in Manhattan, rising to assistant vice president. When she retired 14 years ago, she moved to New Springville. Mrs. Dillon was a parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church, Westerleigh. She enjoyed spending time with her family and caring for her dog, Bingo. Mrs. Dillon's husband of 37 years, Daniel J., died in 1985. Surviving are her three sons, Daniel J. Jr., William and John; her four daughters, Theresa Fenfert, Kathleen Fenfert, Eileen Mullucks and Patricia Dillon, and 13 grandchildren. CHARLES FRISCIA, 87 Army veteran liked to take grandchildren to beach Friday, September 09, 2005 Charles J. Friscia of Annadale, a retired paintbrush company worker and World War II veteran, died Wednesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. He was 87. After attending high school in his native Manhattan, Mr. Friscia served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II. Stationed in Hawaii, he worked in communications and anti-aircraft surveillance. After spending most of his life in Brooklyn, he moved to Bay Terrace in 1981 and settled in Annadale five years ago. For 40 years, Mr. Friscia worked for the former Baker Brush Co., a paintbrush manufacturer in Manhattan. He retired in 1979. Mr. Friscia loved spending time with his grandchildren -- especially going to beaches with them in the summer, his family said. "He was a great guy who always made everybody laugh," said his daughter, Maria Puglia. "He will be missed." Mr. Friscia was a parishioner of St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills. In addition to his daughter, Maria, surviving are his wife of 58 years, the former Estelle Fraracci; his daughters, Amelia Palmiotto and Marlene Friscia, and five grandchildren. ANTHONY BURZILLO, 65 Truck driver liked fishing, crabbing, cooking catch Friday, September 09, 2005 Anthony (Bob) Burzillo, a former Staten Islander and retired truck driver, died Tuesday in Atlantic City (N.J.) Medical Center, of injuries he suffered in a motorcycle accident near his home in Manahawkin, N.J. The 65-year-old had been on an errand to help raise funds for a local child with cancer, his family said, when the accident occurred, just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday. As he traveled west on McKinley Avenue in Manahawkin, a vehicle entering the road collided with his motorcycle, according to the Stafford Township Police Department. Mr. Burzillo was taken to Southern Ocean County Hospital and later flown to Atlantic City Medical Center, where he died Tuesday night. Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision. The Egbertville native lived in various communities on Staten Island, and attended McKee High School. He then lived in Eltingville for 37 years before relocating to Perry's Lake, an adult community in Manahawkin, in November. A self-employed truck driver before he joined El Sol, Mr. Burzillo worked for the Queens-based trucking company for 13 years. A member of Local 282, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, he retired in 2002. A motorcycle enthusiast, in the 1950s he belonged to a motorcycle club, The Wanderers of Staten Island. Fishing and crabbing with friends in Manahawkin were among his favorite pastimes -- he especially enjoyed cooking his catch with his wife of 43 years, the former Kathleen (Kathy) Gauthier. Mr. Burzillo also enjoyed taking trips to Atlantic City, and was involved with community activities at Perry's Lake. He recently cooked at the community's Labor Day barbecue, and liked helping neighbors there, according to his daughter Kathie (Missy) Hockenjos. Mr. Burzillo was in the habit of perusing the coupons in the newspaper and would call family members to tell them about sales on grocery items. In fact, he called his children and grandchildren every day. He was goodhearted and helpful to everyone, said his daughter. He was an outgoing and happy person. On Staten Island, Mr. Burzillo was a parishioner of Holy Child R.C. Church, Eltingville. In addition to his wife, Kathy, and daughter, Missy, Mr. Burzillo is survived by his son, Robert; his daughter, Janet Gutierrez, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, Manahawkin, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's R.C. Church, Barnegat, N.J. The arrangements include cremation.
