PHYLLIS COLLURA Took responsibility for her 6 siblings at the age of 21 Sunday, September 11, 2005 By HEIDI SHRAGER ADVANCE STAFF WRITER Phyllis Collura, 96, of New Springville, a homemaker, died yesterday at home. Mrs. Collura was born Phyllis Palmieri in the Little Italy section of Manhattan. She relocated to the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn when she was 13. By the time she was 21, both her parents had passed away, and she took on the responsibility of raising her six younger brothers and sisters. When Raymond Collura proposed to her in 1930, she initially declined, explaining that she couldn't abandon the children who now depended on her. But Mr. Collura offered to take them all in, and they married later that year. "She was a tough woman," said her granddaughter, Louise Connolly. "At 26 years old, she had nine kids -- six brothers and sisters, and three of her own. She was a matriarch, everybody loved her." In 1973, after 43 years of marriage, her husband passed away. In the early 1980s, Mrs. Collura moved in with Mrs. Connolly in Rossville. In 1997, she began living half the year in Philadelphia with one daughter, Theresa Parenti, and the other half in New Springville with another daughter, Concetta Cagnetta. Few people would have guessed the age of Mrs. Collura, a feisty woman who never suffered medical problems, said Mrs. Connolly. She didn't even need eyeglasses. Mrs. Collura was described as having dyed blonde hair and almost always wore fresh lipstick, elegant beads around her neck and an ensemble fit for a magazine cover. She enjoyed going go Atlantic City, where she would play three-card poker. She was also a well-loved regular at the Richmond Avenue Off-Track Betting office in New Springville. They even got her a birthday cake one year, recalled Mrs. Connolly. "People used to make a joke that that's what kept her alive," she said. Mrs. Collura's Italian cooking was legendary, said her family, particularly her pizza. Several months ago, she broke her pelvis in a fall, and then grew progressively weaker. She seemed to be ready to go, said Mrs. Connolly. "She always used to say that God rewarded her by giving her a long life," she said. "When she died, everyone was around her." Surviving Mrs. Connolly, in addition to her daughters, are sisters Marie Tocci and Anne Morganelli, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. A year-old infant daughter, Marie, died of spinal meningitis in 1935. The funeral will be Tuesday from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 11 a.m. in St. Rita's R.C. Church, Meiers Corners. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. RUTH EDELMAN, 83 Homemaker enjoyed square dancing Sunday, September 11, 2005 Ruth Edelman, 83, of Oakwood, a homemaker and a former administrative assistant, died Friday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born Ruth Jacobowitz in Brooklyn, Mrs. Edelman moved to St. George in the late 1940s and later to Oakwood. She graduated from the former Straubenmuller Textile High School in Manhattan in 1940. Mrs. Edelman worked as an administrative assistant for Marsh & McLennan, Manhattan, for many years until she left to care for her family. For many years, she was a member of the square-dancing group at the Aberlin/North Shore Jewish Community Center in Tompkinsville, performing both on the Island and at senior centers in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Mrs. Edelman and her husband, Isidore, who died in 1993, traveled extensively in both the United States and Europe. In addition to being an avid reader, she enjoyed watching old movies. Mrs. Edleman is survived by her two daughters, Karen Garriz and Paula Honeyman; two brothers, Melvin Jacobowitz and Martin Jacobi, and four grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted tomorrow in United Hebrew Cemetery, Richmond. Arrangements are being handled by Menorah Chapels, New Springville.
