SILVANO FLEGAR, 51 Sanitation worker considered sons his 'precious gift' Wednesday, September 14, 2005 Silvano (Nano) Flegar, 51, of Great Kills, a Sanitation Department supervisor, died yesterday from complications of acute myelogenous leukemia in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Mr. Flegar had battled leukemia since March, when he was diagnosed with the illness after returning from a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., with the senior class of Staten Island Technical High School. His family said he was a happy, easy-going, loving husband and father, who, along with his wife, Valerie, loved every minute of the five-day trip. Under care by Dr. Terenig O. Terjanian and the Nalitt Center at Staten Island University Hospital, Mr. Flegar underwent two rounds of chemotherapy. He also went through the National Marrow Donor Program to search for a compatible bone marrow donor. Benefits were held to help raise money for the search, including the "Farewell Dance" at Staten Island Tech, where his wife is the supervisor of aides. In June, there was a golf fund-raiser at Silver Lake Golf Course, and a dinner to raise money was held at the Great Hall of Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Livingston. Three matches were found, but Mr. Flegar's treatment did not bring about remission and the bone marrow transplant could not be performed. After two months at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan and another round of chemotherapy, his family learned the leukemia could not be beat, they said. "Nano's battle was fought with the help of many people donating blood and platelets for his constant blood transfusions," his wife said. "These transfusions gave him the temporary boost to hang on to life. Many members of the New York City Department of Sanitation, St. Clare's Church and Staten Island Technical High School staff, along with family and friends, made extra time on Earth possible." Mr. Flegar enjoyed the last few months of his life, with his wife and two sons, Christopher Joseph and Michael Ben, by his side, his family said. He also continued to visit his parish, St. Clare's R.C. Church in Great Kills, the Great Kills Swim Club and Atlantic City. STREETS OF BROOKLYN Mr. Flegar was born in Trieste, Italy, and his parents, Zita and the late Joseph, brought him and his sister, Magda Ancic, to America in 1955. His family settled in Park Slope, Brooklyn, where Mr. Flegar played ball on the streets from sunup to past sundown. He made many friends and constantly played many different sports, his family said. Mr. Flegar graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn and attended Hunter College in Manhattan. He settled in Great Kills 20 years ago. For 11 years, Mr. Flegar worked for Ebasco Services Inc. in Manhattan, first as an engineering drafter and then as an accountant. He began his career with the city Sanitation Department in 1990 at the Manhattan District 2 Garage. In 1996, he was promoted to supervisor and moved to Manhattan District 6, where he worked until becoming ill. He loved his job, Mr. Flegar's family said. "We knew this from the amount of support received from all garages throughout the city that Nano touched many lives," his wife said. According to his family, Mr. Flegar's happiest years were during his marriage to the former Valerie Tiberi -- the couple wed in 1982 -- and after their sons were born. Being a father was his most precious gift from God, his family said, and he was very proud of his boys. LARGE FAMILY Mr. Flegar had always wanted a large family, his wife said, and when he married, he gained a large, extended family and the Tiberis always treated him as one of their own. He became "Uncle Nano" to 11 nieces and nephews, with whom he bonded and made a special mark in each of their lives. An avid sportsman, Mr. Flegar ran the New York City Marathon three times. He also enjoyed playing cards in Atlantic City and Las Vegas. "He took a tremendous amount of joy in everything," his wife said. In the hospital and at home, he was surrounded by friends and family. Mr. Flegar received daily visits from his mother and his wife's parents, Pat and Ben Tiberi, who treated him like a son. And he was supported by his sisters-in-law, Susan Zotts and Tricia Leonti, and his brothers-in-law, Steven Tiberi, Tom Zotts and Joe Leonti. "They kept him laughing and smiling constantly. Their crazy and chaotic antics were a source of great joy to Nano as he fought for each day. Laughter was his best medicine," his wife said. The funeral will be Friday from the Casey-McCallum-Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills, with a mass at 9:45 a.m. in St. Clare's Church. The arrangements include cremation. ROBERT MONDEL, 53 Liked working with children, was passionate reader Wednesday, September 14, 2005 Former Staten Islander Robert P. Mondel, 53, of Linden, N.J., a developmental aide, died Monday in Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth, N.J., after a long illness. A Bronx native, he moved with his family to Great Kills around 1965. After marrying in 1996, Mr. Mondel and his wife settled in Linden. He graduated from Tottenville High School and continued his schooling at the College of Staten Island. Mr. Mondel graduated from CSI with a bachelor of arts degree in history with the highest honors, his family said. He also received the Arlie B. Williamson Award to honor his extensive knowledge and work in history. At the time of his death, he had worked for 26 years as a developmental aide for Staten Island Developmental Disabilities Services Office, Willowbrook. He enjoyed working with the children there, his family said. He also liked watching television. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a wonderful person. He loved life and he loved to make people laugh and be happy, said his wife of nine years, the former Barbara Pollard. In addition to his wife, surviving are his stepdaughter, Kisha Pollard; two brothers, his fraternal twin, Steven Mondel, and Scott Bosco, and his mother, Shirley Bosco. MARIA FAMA, 84 Learned gardening skills on farm in native Italy Wednesday, September 14, 2005 Maria Concetta Fama, a longtime Mariners Harbor resident and gardening enthusiast, died Monday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton, after a long illness. She was 84. The former Maria Concetta Condomitti lived on a farm in her native town of Cittanova, Reggio Calabria, Italy. She incorporated these skills into her garden in Mariners Harbor, a community she moved to in 1955, when she immigrated to the United States with her family. "She has over a hundred houseplants and many home-grown vegetables, including eggplant and zucchini, and fig and peach trees," said her daughter, Nancy Fama-Clark. On June 13, Mrs. Fama and her family celebrated her 50th anniversary in the United States. Her daughter described her as a self-educated woman who loved learning new things. "She acted as a secretary for family and neighbors by handling letters and all correspondence," she said. "She always said that if she could, she would be an astronaut." A dedicated family woman, Mrs. Fama enjoyed visiting family in Italy, France, England and Florida. She liked to knit sweaters for her children and grandchildren, crochet, cook and listen to Italian opera. After being introduced to her future husband by her cousin, Robert Toni, she and Joseph Millar were married in St. Joseph's R.C. Church, Rosebank, in 1947. The couple celebrated their golden anniversary with a four-island tour of Hawaii. Mrs. Millar was a member of the senior citizens club of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton, and the Westerleigh chapter of the AARP. She enjoyed taking bus trips with both groups, visiting Atlantic City, Ocean City, Md., and various theaters and playhouses. She also participated in Blessed Sacrament's annual communion breakfast, and with her husband, chaired several of the AARP's holiday parties during the 1990s. Mrs. Millar loved driving, dining out around Staten Island and decorating for Christmas. She visited friends and family in Florida every year and liked to play the poker machines in Atlantic City. She was a very friendly person, said her husband, Joseph. She had a lot of friends and was very dedicated to them. She always sent cards for everyone's birthdays. Mrs. Millar had been a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church for 50 years. The funeral will be Saturday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a mass at 10:30 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament Church. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Pleasant Plains.
