WILLIAM COBB, 79, Sergeant had 34-year NYPD career Friday, September 16, 2005 Native Staten Islander William (Coxie) A. Cobb Jr., 79, of Manchester, N.J., a retired police sergeant, died Wednesday in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, N.J. Born in New Dorp, he also lived in Great Kills for several years before relocating to Manchester 20 years ago. Mr. Cobb began his career with the city Police Department at the South Shore's 123rd Precinct. He retired as a sergeant from the North Shore's 120th Precinct in 1981. He was a member of the Emerald Society, the Holy Name Society and the Retired Police Officers' 10-13 Club. A graduate of New Dorp High School, Mr. Cobb, who was described by his family as very popular, was elected class president. An avid athlete, he was a member of the New Dorp Queens Football and Baseball Association. He was also an umpire for the Staten Island Little League, Dongan Hills, in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Mr. Cobb, who liked to hit the links two to three times a week, was a member of the Finest Golf Club and the Leisure Knoll Golf Club in Manchester, where he reigned as club champion for 14 years. He treasured his hole-in-one trophy. A World War II veteran, Mr. Cobb served stateside in the Navy. While living on Staten Island, he was a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp, and St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills. In New Jersey, was a parishioner of St. John's R.C. Church, Lakehurst. Surviving are his wife of 16 years, the former Mae E. Thompson; his son, Michael Edwards; his two daughters, Barbara C. Blake and Kathleen T. Edwards; two brothers, Gerard and Paul; a sister, Patricia Hagger, and six grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday from the Oliverie Funeral Home, Manchester, with a mass at 9 a.m. in St. John's Church. Burial will follow in Brig. Gen. William C. JOSEPH DeFILIPPIS, 46 Televison news producer had passion for painting Friday, September 16, 2005 Born in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, he graduated from Nazareth High School in that borough. After graduation from St. John's University, Queens, in the early 1980s, Mr. DeFilippis traveled for a year in Europe. He then moved to San Francisco to begin a career in television news with an entry-level job as a news cameraman for a network affiliate. He later became a news producer, stepping up to increasingly bigger markets, and lived in Reno, Nev., Providence, R.I., a small town in Maine and, finally, in Orlando, Fla. About three years ago, Mr. DeFilippis decided to return to his native city, but instead of Brooklyn, he chose to buy a house in bucolic Livingston. "He had always loved the North Shore of Staten Island," said his close friend, Ted Baus. Mr. DeFilippis had a knack for design, said Baus, adding, "He had a real gift for taking things that you would not look at twice and turning them into something that you couldn't take your eyes off." Baus described his friend as a "terrific storyteller" and "the best wedding guest ever" -- Mr. DeFilippis was the life of the party. "He loved dancing, music, friends and family," Baus said. "He loved anything where people got together to celebrate the continuance of life." Painting was another of his passions and he effortlessly captured the world's beauty in his landscapes and still lifes. "Joe loved life and saw beauty everywhere. He leaves behind family and friends that span the planet," Baus said. Surviving Mr. DeFilippis is his mother, Giovanna DeFilippis. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Harmon Home for Funerals, with a mass at 10:15 a.m. at Sacred Heart R.C. Church, both West Brighton. Mr. DeFilippis' body will be flown to Bari, Italy, for burial alongside his father. JAMES CATELLA, 47 Lifelong Islander was friter of fiction, poetry Friday, September 16, 2005 Born in South Beach, he was brought to Elm Park as a child and graduated from Port Richmond High School. From 1976 to 1979, Mr. Catella served in the U.S. Air Force. A specialist first class, he was stationed at Pease Air Force Base in Portsmouth, N.H. He then went on to work for Saks New York in Manhattan for six years as an administrative assistant to the president. Mr. Catella was also the editor in chief of the company newsletter. During this time, he earned a bachelor's of art degree in English literature and journalism from Baruch College in Manhattan, where he was on the dean's list every year. From 1985 to 1987, he taught English at Concord and Curtis high schools. Mr. Catella helped develop a New Opportunities Program at Concord, which taught students oral and written communication skills. He then worked for the New York City Housing Authority from 1987 to 1994 as a housing assistant, interviewing applicants for housing complexes in Manhattan. Mr. Catella moved to Silver Lake in 1995. He loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed writing fictional stories and poems and reading. In addition to his sister, Gloria Kolbe, Mr. Catella is survived by his father, James ; his mother, Violet, and his three brothers, Mark, Peter and Perry. EDNA CEBULA, 93 Practical nurse enjoyed traveling in Florida Friday, September 16, 2005 Edna Tucker Spear Cebula, a former Great Kills resident and a retired practical nurse, died Monday of kidney failure in Life Care Center of Orange Park, Fla., where she had resided for 18 months. She was 93. Born in Eastport, Minn., she attended Shead Memorial High School. She moved to Great Kills in 1953. Mrs. Cebula was a congregant of Willowbrook Park Baptist Church, Bulls Head. She relocated to Tavares, Fla. in 1999, and settled in Orange Park in 2001. Mrs. Cebula was a licensed practical nurse at the former Willowbrook State School for 12 years. She retired in 1974. An avid reader, she also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. While living in Florida, Mrs. Cebula enjoyed traveling around the state and sampling the fare at various restaurants. Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Edward Cebula; her son, Harry Spear; two daughters, Joyce Perry and Katherine Whitcomb Walter; a sister, Florence Camick; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Cebula's stepdaughter, Virginia Spear Sagaria, died in 1998. The funeral service will be today at 2 p.m. in the Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, Orange Park. Burial will follow in the Garden of the Good Shepherd in Jacksonville (Fla.) Memory Gardens. CAROL LEE GRILLO, 61 High school secretary had strong faith Friday, September 16, 2005 Carol Lee Grillo, 61, of Great Kills, a retired school secretary with a strong religious faith, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. Born Carol Lee Bickelman in Shamokin, Pa., she was brought to Brooklyn as a child. Twenty years later, she moved to Great Kills. Mrs. Grillo worked for 12 years as a secretary at the Bay Ridge High School annex in Brooklyn. She retired 14 years ago. A parishioner of St. Clare's R.C. Church, Great Kills, Mrs. Grillo was described as a deeply religious woman. Remembered by her family as quiet and unassuming, she enjoyed tending the flowers and plants in her garden. Her husband of 42 years, Vic, recalled their favorite toast: "Here's to us." In addition to her husband, Vic, surviving are her two daughters, Maria and Victoria Grillo; a brother, Glenn; a sister, Marie Dalton, and one granddaughter. The funeral will be tomorrow from the Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a mass at 9:15 a.m. in St. Charles R.C. Church, Oakwood. Burial will follow in Cypress Hills Cemetery, Brooklyn.
