SISTER MARY GENEVIEVE VER, 97 Former St. Joseph Hill Academy teacher Sunday, September 18, 2005 Sister Mary Genevieve Ver, 97, a teacher for 26 years at St. Joseph Hill Academy, Arrochar, died Friday in Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Egbertville, where she had resided since September 2002. Born in Kelly's Island, Ohio, in 1908, she moved to 2000 Northampton, Pa., in 1928. Sister Genevieve Ver entered the convent of the Daughters of Divine Charity at St. Joseph Hill in 1929. She took her first vows in 1931, and her final vows in 1937. In 1930, she began teaching second grade in Perth Amboy, N.J. She transferred to a school in Fairfield, Conn., and remained there until 1934, when she went to St. Joseph Hill, where she taught library science. Sister Genevieve also taught in schools in Detroit and in California. "She was a very kind and gentle person, and very conscientious, who always had a good word for everyone," said Sister Josita DiVita, provincial superior of the Daughters of Divine Charity at St. Joseph Hill Academy. "She was so jovial, very happy and pleasant, even in the nursing home, where she made everyone laugh." Sister Genevieve Ver earned a bachelor's degree in education from Fordham University in Queens and a bachelor's degree in library science from Villanova University in Pennsylvania. "She always told me how she loved teaching," said her brother, Louis Ver, 88, of Allentown, Pa. "And she loved traveling. I went along with her and a group of teachers years ago to Ireland, to England, to Lourdes in Southern France," Mr. Ver said. A mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow in St. Joseph Hill Chapel. Burial will be on Tuesday in Our Lady of Hungary Cemetery, Northampton, Pa. The Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, is handling the arrangements. RUTH JOHNSEN, 82 Volunteered caring for soldiers during WWII Sunday, September 18, 2005 Ruth F. Johnsen, 82, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., a retired secretary who spent more than 50 years on Staten Island, died Aug. 28 in a hospice in Cocoa Beach. Born Ruth Franzen on the Island, she grew up in Brighton Heights and later lived in Silver Lake and Eltingville before settling in Cocoa Beach 20 years ago. Mrs. Johnsen and her husband, Randolph, also owned homes on Long Beach Island, Manahawkin and Colts Neck, N.J., as well as North Carolina. They rented some of the properties and then vacationed in them at different times of the year. They liked to spend winters in Florida and summers in the cool mountains of North Carolina or near the water at the New Jersey Shore, according to family. Mrs. Johnsen graduated from Curtis High School and the Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School. She worked for the former New York Telephone Co. and RCA in Manhattan before going to work as a secretary for the principal at her alma mater, Curtis. She left work to raise her family. As a young woman, Mrs. Johnsen also volunteered at the former Halloran Hospital, Willowbrook, where she helped care for soldiers injured during World War II. Her husband was a World War II veteran whom she met through a friend. The two were married two weeks after their first date. They remained devoted to each other throughout their 50-year marriage, according to her family. Mrs. Johnsen often helped her husband build and renovate the homes they owned. "She worked side by side by with him, always knocking down walls and painting with him. She really had some fortitude. They were such a couple, and I have to admire everything they did," said Linda Johnsen, Mrs. Johnsen's daughter. Mrs. Johnsen and her husband were founding members of the South Shore Swim Club. They also were members of the Sons of Norway. Mrs. Johnsen enjoyed entertaining family and friends and traveling throughout the United States and Europe. Her husband, Randolph, died in 1994. Surviving in addition to her daughter, Linda, are another daughter, Wendy Bonelli, and two grandchildren. Funeral services were handled by Beckman-Williamson Funeral Home in Cocoa Beach, Fla. A memorial service is to be conducted at a later date. EDWARD KASZA, 37 Licensed contractor was electrocuted in Manhattan Sunday, September 18, 2005 Edward J. Kasza, 37, of Tottenville, a plumber, business owner and licensed contractor who was a lifelong Staten Islander, died Thursday after being electrocuted at a Manhattan construction site. Mr. Kasza had been working for Advanced Plumbing in Maspeth, Queens, when the 2003 accident occurred at Andrew's Hotel, located at 197 Bowery. He was pronounced dead at NYU Downtown Hospital. The medical examiner is determining the cause of death, according to his family. Born and raised in Annadale, Mr. Kasza graduated from Tottenville High School. He settled in Tottenville eight years ago. In addition to being a plumber for Advanced Plumbing, Mr. Kasza also owned and operated Redwood Tree Service and Landscaping. He began the company 15 years ago and based its operation in his home. "He started the operation from scratch, having just five lawns, and it grew into a booming business," said his stepson, Jonathan Perner. Mr. Kasza also had a contractor's license, which he had obtained in 1998. He enjoyed working, gardening, listening to music and watching baseball and football -- particularly the New York Yankees and Giants. Surviving Mr. Kasza in addition to his stepson, Jonathan, are his wife of five years, the former Tammy Perner; a brother, Frank Kasza, and three sisters, Carol, Kathy and Joan Kasza. The funeral will be Tuesday from the Bedell-Pizzo Funeral Home with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, both in Tottenville. JOHN SPECKIN, 76 Was Sanit foreman Sunday, September 18, 2005 John Harold Speckin Jr., 76, of Ringoes, N.J., a native Staten Islander, former National Guardsman and retired Sanitation Department foreman, died Friday on a hiking trail in Mansfield, Pa., where he had been vacationing. The Great Kills native lived in Stapleton and other communities on Staten Island before relocating to Ringoes, N.J., in 1972. After graduating from Tottenville High School, Mr. Speckin served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. Mr. Speckin met his wife, the former Laura R. Roe, at a dance at Tappan Post, American Legion, in Stapleton. The couple wed in 1955. Mr. Speckin worked at the former Cosmopolitan Shipping and General Steamship companies in Manhattan from 1953 to 1963. He was a mess sergeant with the New York Army National Guard from 1966 to 1988. He was also the owner of a former Carvel ice cream store in Brooklyn from 1963 to 1968, and was a foreman for the city Sanitation Department in Manhattan and at the Fresh Kills landfill for 19 years before he retired in 1988. Mr. Speckin was a member of the Staten Island Guardsmen; the Sanitation Department's Emerald Society; the Ancient Order of Hibernians; the Hunterdon Hiking Club and the Hunterdon Walking Club in Flemington, N.J.; and the Spicy Seniors Bowling League, also in Flemington. He was a parishioner of St. Alphonsus R.C. Church, Hopewell, N.J., and was a fourth-degree member of the church's Knights of Columbus council. Mr. Speckin liked to take walks and enjoyed nature. He also was a golfer, and in 1999, he won a silver medal for golf in the Staten Island Senior Olympics. He also enjoyed listening to Irish music and was proud of his Irish heritage, according to his family. "He was friendly and very energetic," said his daughter, Andrea Speckin. Mr. Speckin's wife, Laura, died in 1994. In addition to his daughter, Andrea, he is survived by his two sons, John H. Speckin III and Michael P. Speckin; another daughter, Lynn A. Danser, and three grandsons. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Robert L. Ford Funeral Home, Flemington, N.J., with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Alphonsus Church. DOROTHY BUNBURY, 64 Anchor Savings customer service representative Sunday, September 18, 2005 Dorothy Bunbury, 64, a former Staten Islander and retired customer service representative, died yesterday in Whittier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, Ghent, N.Y., where she had resided for four years. The former Dorothy McDaniels was born in Manhattan and graduated from St. Veronica's High School there. She moved to Midland Beach in 1969, and had lived in Purling, N.Y., for six years before she entered the Whittier home four years ago. Mrs. Bunbury was a customer service representative at the former Anchor Savings Bank in New Springville for about 20 years. She retired in 1995. Mrs. Bunbury enjoyed knitting and crocheting afghans and played bingo as often as she could. She was a member of the Red Hat Society in Purling, N.Y. "She was an independent, free-spirited and happy person," said her daughter, Mary Vanicky. "She taught us all to never be afraid. And she taught me how to be a good woman and a good mother." In addition to her daughter, Mary, surviving are her husband of 30 years, William Bunbury; six sons, Robert, Thomas, Timothy, James and Matthew Donoghue and James Bunbury III; another daughter, Ellen Papp, and 19 grandchildren. COLUMBIA CALDERON, 84 Enjoyed sewing and cooking Sunday, September 18, 2005 Columbia Calderon, 84, of Mariners Harbor, a homemaker, died Friday at home. Born Columbia Flores in Guayaquil, Ecuador, she relocated Manhattan in 1964. Mrs. Calderon moved to New Brighton in 1968 and to the Bronx in 1970. She traveled back and forth to South America for many years before settling in Mariners Harbor in 1997. Mrs. Calderon enjoyed sewing, cooking and spending time with her family. "She was a loving mother and a loving grandmother," said her grandson, Mario Felix, on behalf of her family. "She was an all-around great person." Mrs. Calderon was a parishioner of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, Tompkinsville. Her husband of more than 30 years, Victor, died in 1972. Mrs. Calderon is survived by her three sons, Carlos, Pablo and Victor Jr.; three daughters, Myra, Mariana and Bella Calderon; a brother, Luis Flores; two sisters, Alba and Olga Gonzalez, 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be tomorrow with a service at 11 a.m. in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton. Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery, also West Brighton. CARMINE D'ONOFRIO, 40 Gas station attendant Sunday, September 18, 2005 Carmine D'onofrio, 40, of New Brighton, a gas station attendant, died Thursday at home. Born to Josephine and the late Vittorio D'onofrio in Naples, Italy, he settled in New Brighton in the early 1970s. For the past three years until the time of his death, Mr. D'onofrio was a gas station attendant at F & B Service Station in Fort Wadsworth. He liked to watch hockey and football on television. Mr. D'onofrio's favorite hockey team was the New York Islanders, and his favorite football team was the New York Giants. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, including his brother, Amerigo, and his sister-in-law, Joann. The funeral will be tomorrow with a service at 8 p.m. in the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton.
