WALTER STEINER, 81 Former roofer was WW II veteran Monday, September 19, 2005 Rosebank resident Walter Joseph Steiner, 81, a former roofer and veteran of World War II, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. A lifelong resident of Rosebank, Mr. Steiner graduated from McKee High School. He served in the Marines as a sergeant from 1943 to 1946, stationed in Europe. Upon his return, he joined the family roofing business started by his father in 1910. He continued to build roofs and work as a tin smith shaping metal for the next 60 years, retiring in 2003. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Steiner was a member of the Staten Island Detachment 1 Marine Core League in Sunnyside and the Greenridge Elks Lodge, Richmond. He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Mary's R.C. Church, Rosebank. In addition to his wife of 45 years, the former Helen Bouwmans, surviving are his son, William; two daughters, Elaine Swartzel and Carleen Bruzzese, and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be Thursday from the A. Azzara Funeral Home, South Beach, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. MATTIE SPANN, 81 Former city elections worker, volunteer Monday, September 19, 2005 Mattie Elizabeth Spann, 81, of Brooklyn, a former city elections worker, died Wednesday in the Bishop Henry Hucles Episcopal Nursing Home, Brooklyn. Born Mattie Conway in Richmond, Va., Mrs. Spann lived in Baltimore and Brooklyn before settling in West Brighton in the 1950s. She moved to New Brighton 20 years later and returned to Brooklyn in 1976. Mrs. Spann worked as a housekeeper for the former U.S. Public Health Services Hospital, Clifton. She also worked as a clerk with the former Marine Midland Bank in Manhattan. Until her illness, she also worked at polling centers for the city Board of Elections. Mrs. Spann was a former member of St. Philip's Baptist Church, Port Richmond, serving on its usher and missionary boards. When she moved to Brooklyn, she joined the Brown Memorial Baptist Church, and was a member of its usher and missionary boards. She was also involved in the Boy Scout program at the church. "She helped out wherever she was needed," said her daughter, Lenora Spann. Mrs. Spann was also a member of the Elks Club and the Order of the Eastern Star. Her husband, Nathaniel, died in 1989. She was also predeceased by a son, Ronald, who died in 1990, and a daughter, Dolores, who died in 1989. In addition to her daughter, Lenora, surviving are two sons, Nathaniel Jr. and Michael; two more daughters, Carolyn and Sharon Spann; 13 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Gerald J. Wingster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with a service at 7 p.m. at Brown Memorial Baptist Church, Brooklyn. DOROTHY SCHMIDT, 92 Homemaker volunteered for Meals on Wheels Monday, September 19, 2005 Dorothy Louise Schmidt, 92, of Randall Manor, a mother of four known for her sparkling sense of humor and storytelling, died yesterday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay. The former Dorothy Louise Matthius was born in Stapleton to a prominent family with ties to the Island dating back to the late 1800s. A 1924 graduate of Curtis High School, she was awarded a space on the school's permanent honor roll, which still adorns the halls. She went on to study at the former Packard Business School, Manhattan. As a young woman, Mrs. Schmidt worked briefly for Kaufman and Kaufman, a former Island real estate firm. A lifelong member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Port Richmond, Mrs. Schmidt celebrated her life's milestones in the church, including her baptism, confirmation and her marriage in 1939 to Dr. Arthur A. Schmidt. During World War II, Mrs. Schmidt joined her husband in Biloxi, Miss., where he was serving as a captain in the Army Air Force. When the war ended, the couple returned to Westerleigh, where they lived until 1976 when they relocated to Grasmere. In 1977, Mrs. Schmidt settled in Randall Manor. She spent her summers at the Cedar Grove Beach Club in New Dorp since 1956. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she volunteered, and later worked as an office assistant, for Meals-on-Wheels in Port Richmond. Mrs. Schmidt was known for her great sense of humor, and her family said she was a wonderful joke and storyteller. The friends at her weekly bridge game always eagerly awaited her latest quip, and her family said she was still telling new jokes at her 90th birthday party. She also enjoyed singing and playing 1940s-style songs on the piano, crafts and knitting. As a young woman, she was a member of the St. John's Church choir, and later joined the Ladies' Guild. "Our mom had a wonderful life and she was always very grateful for her many blessings, but most of all, her family and friends. We will all miss her very much," said her son, Dr. Carl Schmidt. In addition to her son, Carl, surviving are her son, John; her two daughters, Margaret Hepworth and Barbara Pfaff, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday from the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond, with a service at 10:30 a.m. in St. John's Church. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. BESSIE O'BRYANT, 60 Recreational therapist was active in church Monday, September 19, 2005 Bessie M. O'Bryant, 60, of Todt Hill, a retired recreational therapist who was devoted to her church and choir, died Friday in St. Vincent's Hospital, West Brighton, of breast cancer. Born Bessie Browning in South Carolina, she moved to New Brighton in 1956. She moved to West Brighton in 1963 and settled on Todt Hill last year. A graduate of Curtis High School, she also attended the College of Staten Island. She was a recreational therapist for the mentally disabled for 35 years at the Staten Island Developmental Disabilities Services Office, Willowbrook. She retired in 2000. Mrs. O'Bryant was an active member of St. Philip's Baptist Church, Port Richmond. She served as chairwoman of the church's board of trustees; as former president of the Guiding Light Singers; and as a member of the Cathedral Choir, the Senior Usher Board, the Nurses Ministry, the William A. Epps Community Center Board of Directors and the Van Committee. Mrs. O'Bryant was also the worthy matron of the Silver Queen Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, from 1998 to 1999. She told the Advance about her love of gospel singing back in February 1995. "Gospel is a feeling. It's just a feeling of joy that overwhelms you and is expressed through music," she said. Mrs. O'Bryant also loved jazz music, and was a regular at The Meeting Place in New Brighton, the oldest African-American jazz bar on Staten Island, which closed last year. She also enjoyed reading, doing crossword puzzles, playing softball, attending family and social gatherings, traveling and shopping -- especially for shoes and hats. "She was a loving sister and my very best friend," said her sister, Wilhelmina Waddell. In addition to her sister, surviving are her husband of 41 years, David; a son, David Sean; two daughters, Paula Mathew and Kathleen Lisa Smith; her mother, Willie Mae Browning; five brothers, Johnnie, Melvin Jr., James, Michael and Holbert Fleming; another sister, Mae Ruth Browning, and eight grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be handled by the Stradford Funeral Home, Tompkinsville, with a service Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Philip's Baptist Church, Port Richmond. Burial will follow in Silver Mount Cemetery, Silver Lake.
